    A bilingual volume that reveals an intriguing world of courtly love and satire in medieval Portugal and SpainThe rich tradition of troubadour poetry in western Iberia had all but vanished from history until the discovery of several ancient cancioneiros, or songbooks, in the nineteenth century. These compendiums revealed close to 1,700 songs, or cantigas, composed by around 150 troubadours from Galicia, Portugal, and Castile in the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. In Cantigas, award-winning translator Richard Zenith presents a delightful selection of 124 of these poems in English versions that preserve the musical quality of the originals, which are featured on facing pages. By turns romantic, spiritual, ironic, misogynist, and feminist, these lyrics paint a vibrant picture of their time and place, surprising us with attitudes and behaviors that are both alien and familiar.The book includes the three major kinds of cantigas. While cantigas de amor (love poems in the voice of men) were largely inspired by the troubadour poetry of southern France, cantigas de amigo (love poems voiced by women) derived from a unique native oral tradition in which the narrator pines after her beloved, sings his praises, or mocks him. In turn, cantigas de escárnio are satiric, and sometimes outrageously obscene, lyrics whose targets include aristocrats, corrupt clergy, promiscuous women, and homosexuals.Complete with an illuminating introduction on the history of the cantigas, their poetic characteristics, and the men who composed and performed them, this engaging volume is filled with exuberant and unexpected poems.

    Although ancient hope has attracted much scholarly attention in the past, this is the first book-length discussion of the topic. The introduction offers a systematic discussion of the semantics of Greek elpis and Latin spes and addresses the difficult question of whether hope -ancient and modern- is an emotion. On the other hand, the 16 contributions deal with specific aspects of hope in Greek and Latin literature, history and art, including Pindar's poetry, Greek tragedy, Thucydides, Virgil's epic and Tacitus' Historiae. The volume also explores from a historical perspective the hopes of slaves in antiquity, the importance of hope for the enhancement of stereotypes about the barbarians, and the depiction of hope in visual culture, providing thereby a useful tool not only for classicist but also for philosophers, cultural historians and political scientists.

This volume offers exemplary insights into the methods of emotion research. Among other emotions, the presentation of anger, fear, fascination and laughter is explored in individual analyses, along with how emotions function in medieval literary texts. Taken together, the contributions provide important insights on the cultural modeling of feelings and into processes of historical transformation. Gefühle bestimmen nicht nur unseren Alltag, sie sind mittlerweile auch zu einem zentralen Thema der geistes- und naturwissenschaftlichen Forschung avanciert. Der Band bietet exemplarisch Einblicke in Methoden der Emotionsforschung; in Einzelanalysen wird außerdem nach der Inszenierung u.a. von Zorn, Angst, Faszination und Lachen sowie nach den Funktionsweisen von Emotionen in literarischen Texten des Mittelalters gefragt.     From the time it emerged in the 18th century until its collapse in the 20th century, the model of the bourgeois father held a central place in politics and literature. For the first time, the present study systematically examines the history of this construct with a focus on the interplay between the mechanisms of paternal authority and the emotionalization of the family as part of the bourgeois value system.     This book comprises eleven essays by leading scholars of early nineteenth-century British literature and periodical culture. The collection addresses the many and varied links between politics and the emotions in Romantic periodicals, from the revolutionary decade of the 1790s, to the 1832 Reform Bill. In so doing, it deepens our understanding of the often conflicted relations between politics and feelings, and raises questions relevant to contemporary debates on affect studies and their relation to political criticism. The respective chapters explore both the politics of emotion and the emotional register of political discussion in radical, reformist and conservative periodicals. They are arranged chronologically, covering periodicals from Pigs’ Meat to Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine and The Spectator. Recurring themes include the contested place of emotion in radical political discourse; the role of the periodical in mediating action and performance; the changing affective frameworks of cultural politics (especially concerning gender and nation), and the shifting terrain of what constitutes appropriate emotion in public political discourse. Jock Macleod is Associate Professor of Literary Studies at Griffith University. William Christie is Professor and Director of the Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University. Peter Denney is Senior Lecturer in History at Griffith University.

Its chapters explore emotion in Hamlet, as well as the myriad emotions surrounding Hamlet’s debts to the medieval past, its relationship to the cultural milieu in which it was produced, its celebrated performance history, and its profound impact beyond the early modern era. Its component chapters are not unified by a single methodological approach. Some deal with a single emotion in Hamlet, while others analyse the emotional trajectory of a single character, and still others focus on a given emotional expression (e.g., sighing or crying). Some bring modern methodologies for studying emotion to bear on Hamlet, others explore how Hamlet anticipates modern discourses on emotion, and still others ask how Hamlet itself can complicate and contribute to our current understanding of emotion.

    Die Untersuchung thematisiert den systematischen Zusammenhang anthropologischer und ästhetischer Reflexion im 18. Jahrhundert und versteht sich als Beitrag zur Theoriegeschichte des ästhetischen Denkens im 18. Jahrhundert am Leitfaden des Emotionsbegriffs. Auf der Basis eines erweiterten Ästhetikbegriffs wird auf Texte der philosophischen Affekttheorie, Erfahrungspsychologie, Anthropologie und Kunsttheorie von Descartes über die deutsche Popularphilosophie zugegriffen und in exemplarischen Lektüren verfolgt, wie im Ästhetikdiskurs des späten 18. Jahrhunderts die Wende zum ästhetischen Subjekt, zum Gefühl interdisziplinär begründet wird.Anthropologisch begründete Theorien des ästhetischen Wissens, so die leitende Hypothese, entwickeln die Eigenbedeutsamkeit des Ästhetischen vordergründig nicht als Metaphysik des Schönen (Theorie des ästhetischen Gegenstands und der Kunst), sondern durch Relativierung der rationalistischen Vorbehalte gegenüber der Sinnlichkeit und die Zurückbindung des Verständnisses des Schönen an die anthropologischen Voraussetzungen ästhetischen Wahrnehmens (Aisthesis). Anthropologische Ästhetik ist in diesem Verständnis erstens Aufklärung über die Sinnennatur des Subjekts, die auf die Anerkennung aller ästhetisch relevanten Vermögen zielt. Sie ist in einem entwicklungsgeschichtlich signifikanten Sinn zweitens Reflexion der Leistungsfähigkeit der sinnlichen Wahrnehmung im Element des Empfindens, des Gefühls. Im Ergebnis der hier thematisierten Revisionen des rationalistischen Erkenntnisparadigmas (Ästhetik als scientia cognitionis sensitivae) wird Baumgartens Leitfrage nach dem "Beitrag der Sinne zur menschlichen Erkenntnis" (H. Adler) in diejenige nach dem Stellenwert der Emotionen für die ästhetische Erfahrung des Subjekts umformuliert. The study is a contribution to the history of the theory of aesthetic thinking in the 18th century using the concept of emotion as its guide. Using an extended notion of aesthetics, texts are drawn upon from philosophical affect theory, from experiential psychology, anthropology and art theory from Descartes via German popular philosophy, and exemplary readings are used to show the basis for turning to the aesthetic subject, to feeling in the discourse of aesthetics in the late 18th century.

    Dealing with forces is part of the basic inventory of artistic processes. In giving shape and movement to material, such forces are manifested in a specific form; as push and pull, for example, as heaviness and lightness, but also as attachment and dissolution. The articles in the book examine notions of formative and motive forces using examples from art, music, dance, theater, photography and literature. The questions posed not only cover how historical notions of force (such as energeia and vis from ancient rhetoric) are adopted, taken further, and correlated with mechanically, metaphysically and organologically based concepts of force, but also how, in the examination of form and movement, the inherent concepts of force are manifested or presented in a new light. Der Umgang mit Kräften gehört zum Grundinventar künstlerischer Verfahren. Im formgebenden und bewegenden Zugriff auf Material prägen sie sich konkret aus, etwa als Zug und Stoß, Schwere und Levitation, aber auch als Bindung und Auflösung. Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen Vorstellungen von Form- und Bewegungskräften anhand von Beispielen aus Kunst, Musik, Tanz, Theater, Fotografie und Literatur. Gefragt wird dabei nicht nur, wie historische Kraftbegriffe (etwa energeia und vis aus der antiken Rhetorik) aufgenommen, weiterentwickelt und zu mechanischen, metaphysischen und organologisch fundierten Kraftkonzepten in Bezug gesetzt werden.     Cognitive approaches to early medieval texts have tended to focus on the mind in isolation. By examining the interplay between mental and physical acts deployed in Old English poetry and prose, this study identifies new patterns and offers new perspectives. In these texts, the performance of right or wrong action is not linked to natural inclination dictated by birth; it is the fruit of right or wrong thinking. The mind consciously directed and controlled is open to external influences, both human and diabolical. This struggle to produce right thought and action reflects an emerging democratization of heroism that crosses societal and gender boundaries, becoming intertwined with socio-political, soteriological, and cultural meaning. In a study of influential prose texts, including the Alfredian translations and the sermons of Ælfric, alongside close readings of three poems from different genres - The Seafarer, The Battle of Maldon, and Juliana -, Ponirakis demonstrates how early medieval authors create patterns of interaction between the mental and the physical. These provide hidden keys to meaning which, once found, unlock new readings of much studied texts. Entsprechend affektstark haben Literatur und später auch Film auf tatsächliche oder behauptete Veränderungen durch Technik reagiert: Das in technischen Erfindungen wurzelnde Angst- und Sehnsuchtspotential wurde poetologisch reflektiert und wirkungsästhetisch genutzt.     Ever since Dodd applied the concept of "shame culture" to Greek culture, Greek studies scholars have been paying special attention to the topic of shame. This volume is now the first to provide a systematic examination of shame in Plato, revealing that Plato did not view shame and related emotions as negative, as has been traditionally assumed, but by all means acknowledged the positive role that they play in a range of different areas. Seit Dodds’ Anwendung des Begriffs „Schamkultur“ auf die griechische Kultur genießt das Thema Scham die besondere Aufmerksamkeit der Gräzisten. Basierend auf einer detaillierten Analyse der relevanten Belegstellen im gesamten platonischen Corpus und einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit den vorherigen einschlägigen Forschungen, versucht die vorliegende Arbeit Platons Konzeption der Scham systematisch zu erläutern, und zwar thematisch unter den folgenden vier Perspektiven: dem sokratischen elenchos, der Wahrheitsliebe, dem Moralverständnis sowie der Moralerziehung im Staat. Die Studie zielt einerseits darauf ab, aufzuzeigen, dass Platons Verständnis von Scham nicht so unreif ist, wie man bislang dachte; andererseits möchte sie vor Augen führen, dass Platon Scham nicht, wie traditionell angenommen, als nur negativ erachtet, sondern ihre positive Rolle in verschiedenen Gebieten durchaus anerkennt. Es wird gezeigt, dass Scham und die ihr verwandten Emotionen von Bedeutung sowohl für den platonischen Sokrates als auch für die platonische Philosophie im Ganzen sind, auch wenn der Begriff „Schamkultur“ wohl keine zutreffende Bezeichnung für seine Zeit darstellt.

Jahrhundert erweist sich das bürgerliche Vatermodell als politisch und literarisch zentral: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Geschichte dieses Konstrukts erstmals systematisch mit Blick auf das Zusammenspiel von paternalen Herrschaftsmechanismen und der Emotionalisierung der Familie im Kontext des bürgerlichen Wertesystems. Literarisch etablierte familiale Strukturen werden dabei als wichtige Blaupause für die Repräsentation von Herrschaft sowie für das Zusammenspiel von Staat und Gesellschaft erkennbar. Das Buch verfolgt die Gratwanderung des bürgerlichen „Vaters“ zwischen moderner Herrschaft und Emotionen unter drei leitenden Aspekten: zum einen bezüglich der Regulierung der filialen Sexualität, zum anderen hinsichtlich der Ermächtigung des „Vaters“ in einer spezifischen, neuen privaten Wertesphäre, und zum dritten mit Blick auf den Funktionswandel des „Vaters“ im Laufe der Jahrhunderte. Die auf dieser Basis nachvollzogene Entwicklung des bürgerlichen Vaters lässt sich als Vorgeschichte und damit auch als konsequente Historisierung wirkungsmächtiger anthropologischer Theorien (wie etwa Freuds Überlegungen zu Vaterschaft und Herrschaft) lesen.

Jahrhu With the publication of Goethe's `Werther' (1774), a new phenomenon found its way into the history of literature: mood. This feeling - familiar since antiquity - of a fundamental entanglement of self and world, developed in the last third of the 18th century into a formal poetic principal which went on to decisively shape the ensuing epoch of Romanticism. After its emergence in literature, the aesthetic mood also becomes a central medium of expression in music and other forms of art right across Europe. Stefan Hajduk's study systematically fleshes out the phenomenon of mood into a methodologically sound concept of historical literary research, and as such, connects the current theoretical debates around emotions with the practice of the scientific reading of emotions.

    Die andauernde Faszination des Films liegt nicht zuletzt in seinem Vermögen, Zuschauer_innen zu einer empathischen Reaktion zu bewegen - Filme rufen Gefühle hervor. Der Band betrachtet verschiedene Aspekte dieser Affekte und Emotionen. Neben dem Spielfilm wird dabei auch das bisher in der Diskussion wenig beachtete Genre der Dokumentarfilme analysiert. Die Beiträge aus Philosophie und Filmwissenschaft berufen sich sowohl auf die Tradition der analytischen Philosophie, die bislang eher kognitivistisch orientiert war, als auch auf aktuelle Entwicklungen in der ästhetischen Theorie, die in der phänomenologischen Tradition steht. The enduring fascination with film lies not least in its ability to move viewers to have an empathetic reaction - in short, films evoke feelings. The collection considers various aspects of these effects and emotions. Alongside feature films, it also analyses the genre of documentary film, which until now has received little attention in this discussion. The contributions from philosophy and film studies call upon both analytical philosophy and current developments in aesthetic theory, allowing for an interweaving of the cognitive with the phenomonological.

    Biographical note: Ingrid Kasten, Freie Universität Berlin Feelings not only determine our everyday life, they have also become a central theme of humanistic and scientific research. This volume offers exemplary insights into the methods of emotion research. Among other emotions, the presentation of anger, fear, fascination and laughter is explored in individual analyses, along with how emotions function in medieval literary texts. Taken together, the contributions provide important insights on the cultural modeling of feelings and into processes of historical transformation. Gefühle bestimmen nicht nur unseren Alltag, sie sind mittlerweile auch zu einem zentralen Thema der geistes- und naturwissenschaftlichen Forschung avanciert. Der Band bietet exemplarisch Einblicke in Methoden der Emotionsforschung; in Einzelanalysen wird außerdem nach der Inszenierung u.a. von Zorn, Angst, Faszination und Lachen sowie nach den Funktionsweisen von Emotionen in literarischen Texten des Mittelalters gefragt.
