Abstract: Nietzsche, Luther, and the Story of Jesus of Nazareth: Heinrich Detering in Conversation with Andreas Urs Sommer. In this talk given in Naumburg on October 13, 2017, Heinrich Detering and Andreas Urs Sommer consider late Nietzsche’s conflictual remarks on Jesus and Luther from Der Antichrist, Ecce homo, and his final letters to be literarily alienated signs of Jesuanic identification. In order to reveal these artistic cover-up tactics, Detering and Sommer follow Nietzsche’s path from proclaiming the death of God in Die fröhliche Wissenschaft in 1882 to him taking God’s place as the Christ on the cross in early 1889

This study examines a series of self-representations from the 19th century (by Goethe, Sand, Nietzsche) that obstruct a confessional and psychologizing mode by diminishing the significance of the self. The theoretical inspiration is drawn from thinkers like Emmanuel Levinas, Hannah Arendt, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and others, who give priority to the individual’s close attachment to a multifaceted world. This approach will lead us to themes and concepts like "participation," "perception," "togetherness," "otherness," "corporeality," "collectivism," "publicness," and "sociality." Vanishing Selves displays different forms of attachment to the world and identifies the ethical and existential potential in the affirmation of a world.

A reappraisal ofEcce HomoandTheAntichristwithin Nietzsches oeuvre.Nietzsche's Legacytakes on the most challenging andmisunderstood works in Nietzsches oeuvre to illuminate his view of what aphilosopher isand what constitutes a philosophic life. InterpretingEcceHomoandThe Antichristas twin books meant toreplace the abandonedWill to Powerproject, Heinrich Meierrecovers them from the stigma of Nietzsches late mental collapse, showing that these works are, aboveall, a lucid self-assessment. The carefully written pair contains both the highest affirmation-the Yes of the revaluation of all values -and the most resolute negation-the No to Christianity. How the Yes and the No go together, how the relation between nature and politics is to be determined, how Nietzsches intention is governing the political-philosophical double-face: this is the subject ofNietzsches Legacy, which opens up a new understanding of Nietzsches philosophy as a whole. "Ecce Homo and The Antichrist address the interrelated questions of what a philosopher is and what constitutes a philosophic life. Nietzsche's Legacy conceives of these twin books as the late major work that is meant to take the place of the Will to Power, a project Nietzsche had come to reject. The pair concludes his œuvre by both enacting the highest affirmation, the "revaluation of all values," and the most resolute negation, the sharpest criticism to which a philosopher has subjected Christianity. Yet in both books, Nietzsche is interested above all in the nature of the philosopher. How the Yes and the No go together, how to determine the relation between nature and politics, how Nietzsche's intention governs the political-philosophical double-face: this is the subject of Nietzsche's Legacy, which advances a new view of Nietzsche's philosophy as a whole"--
