Die Publikation widmet sich einem bislang wenig behandelten Thema der Handzeichnung und Druckgrafik: Wie wurde in der Zeit zwischen ca. 1500 und 1700 über die Schraffur reflektiert? Anhand von fünf Fallstudien werden zentrale Aspekte der künstlerischen Technik untersucht. Der Blick geht dabei über europäische Ländergrenzen hinweg und sucht nach Antworten auf diese Frage. Methodisch werden Ansätze der Diskursgeschichte und Rezeptionsästhetik vereint. Die gute Quellenlage eröffnet einen Schatz an historischen Texten, von denen viele erstmals in diesem Zusammenhang transkribiert und übersetzt wurden. Detaillierte Bildanalysen zeigen, wie das volle Potenzial der Schraffur allein in den Kunstwerken und ihrer Betrachtung aufgehen kann. - Erste Monografie zur Technik der Schraffur in der Frühen Neuzeit- Bisher unpubliziertes Bild- und Textmaterial

Das Werk bietet eine umfassende Darstellung der Autobiographik des frühneuzeitlichen Humanismus. Es behandelt insbesondere neulateinische autobiographische Schriften vom 14. Jh. bis ca. 1600. Hauptautoren: Petrarca, Alberti, Pius. II, Campano, Erasmus, Eobanus Hessus, Marullo, Cardano, Joseph Scaliger, Lipsius. In dem Werk wird vorgeführt, dass die frühneuzeitliche Personendarstellung wesentlich nicht auf feste Identitäten zurückzuführen ist, sondern von sehr unterschiedlichen literarischen Diskursen abhängt, in denen die Selbstbilder auf variable und äußerst kreative Weise gestaltet wurden. Das humanistische autobiographische Schreiben lässt sich als breit angelegte Diskontinuitätsansage fassen, mit der sich die Autoren auf fesselnde Weise von ihrer Mitwelt abhoben. Aus der Analyse der Diskurse geht hervor, dass die Rezeption der klassischen Antike für die ,Erfindung' des frühneuzeitlichen Menschen von grundlegender Bedeutung war

The present study offers a theoretically grounded overview of the emergence, structures and artistic productions resulting from eccentricity. It starts with its prehistory in Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance before pinpointing its emergence in the seventeenth century. From then onwards it serves to negotiate cultural dissent and make it productive. What goes hand in hand with eccentricity is the individual, not as essentially given, but as relational. In the same way that eccentricity has textual and intertextual origins, eccentrics, despite their seeming singularity, form patterns. These can be used as cultural ‘fertiliser’ or as façades in the case of present-day British politicians. The study offers a re-reading of English Literature and Culture from the margins as well as theoretical outlooks in the directions of Gender and Postcolonial Studies.
