    "This is a book-length commentary on Walter Benjamin's 1923 essay "Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers," best known in English under the title "The Task of the Translator." Benjamin's essay is at once an immensely attractive work for top-flight theorists of translation and comparative literature and a frustratingly cryptic work that cries out for commentary. Almost every one of the claims he makes in it seems wildly counterintuitive, because he articulates none of the background support that would help readers place it in larger literary-historical contexts: Jewish mystical traditions from Philo Judaeus's Logos-based Neoplatonism to 13th-century Lurianic Kabbalah; Romantic and post-Romantic esotericisms from Novalis and the Schlegels to Hölderlin and Goethe; modernist avant-garde foreclosures on "the public" and generally the communicative contexts of literature. The book is divided into 78 passages, one to a few sentences in length. Each of the passages becomes its own commentarial unit, consisting of a Benjaminian interlinear box, a paraphrase, a commentary, and a list of other commentators who have engaged the specific passage in question. Because the passages cover the entire text of the essay in sequence, reading straight through the book provides the reader with an augmented experience of reading the essay.     'Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers', heute einer der meistdiskutierten Texte zum Problem des Übersetzens, betrachtete Walter Benjamin seinerzeit als sein ›Credo‹. Wie das zu verstehen ist, macht Julia Abel durch eine Rekonstruktion der systematischen Zusammenhänge im Frühwerk Benjamins deutlich, in dem der Begriff der Übersetzung eine besondere Rolle spielt. Erstmals wird der Essay als Reaktion auf zeitgenössische Problemlagen in Philosophie und Literatur erkennbar, als Antwort auf ästhetische Konzepte des George-Kreises, Rudolf Borchardts und Hugo von Hofmannsthals und schließlich als Entwurf einer Theorie, die den von Hellingrath wiederentdeckten Pindar-Übersetzungen Hölderlins gerecht werden will

    What is it about Walter Benjamin’s «Task of the Translator»? As it is clearly seminal to Translation Studies, why is it rarely taken seriously? This book re-examines Benjamin’s text in a broader context and sheds light on this question, so revealing its true potential for Translation Studies and beyond.When examined in the light of an ontology of language and translation, Benjamin’s philosophy of language displaces age-old and sterile translation theory debates and re-conceptualises translation theory. This broadens the scope of Translation Studies and allows for the relevance of Benjamin’s theory. It is no longer just one theory among many within translation theory. It instead underlies and relates to all translation theories. This book is of interest for Translation Studies as much as for Benjamin scholars.

    A tradução parece trazer dificuldades que exigem soluções diversas que, escolhidas contigencialmente, podem ter implicações históricas e políticas duradouras. A tradução da Bíblia por Lutero é um exemplo marcante da força histórica da tradução e das polêmicas quanto à sua forma. Em "A Tarefa do Tradutor", Benjamin estabelece duas temporalidades distintas para a vida de um texto literário e a de suas traduções, instaurando um debate a respeito dos diferentes tempos históricos que atravessam um texto, em sua relação com as diferentes línguas. A partir dessas considerações, nos propomos a discutir certas dificuldades concretas experienciadas na tradução de citações de uma obra literária dentro de um texto crítico de Benjamin, "Am Kamin", um dos textos em que desenvolve sua teoria do romance. Como traduzir hoje as citações que Benjamin faz do romance "The old wives tale" de Arnold Bennet, citações da tradução para o alemão dos anos 1930, de um texto inglês de 1908 que emula um narrador do início do século XIX, e que não foi ainda traduzido para o português? Por fim, apresento o texto traduzido, "À Lareira". The act of translating seems to bring about difficulties demanding multiple solutions that, while contingent, may have long lasting political and historical implications. Luther's Bible translation is a marked example of the historical force of translation and of the polemics concerning its form. In "The Task of the Translator", Benjamin proposes two distinct temporalities for the life of a literary text and that of its translations, starting a debate regarding the different historical times present in a text, and in its relations with different languages. Departing from these considerations, I propose the discussion of some concrete difficulties experienced in the translation of quotations from a literary work in a critical text by Walter Benjamin, "Am Kamin", a text that develops Benjamin's theory of the novel. How can I translate, today, quotations made by Benjamin of a 1920's German translation of Arnold Bennet's 1908 novel "The old wives tale", with its early 19th century narrator, not yet translated into Portuguese? Finally, I present "Am Kamin" translated into Portuguese.

    'Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers', heute einer der meistdiskutierten Texte zum Problem des Übersetzens, betrachtete Walter Benjamin seinerzeit als sein ›Credo‹. Wie das zu verstehen ist, macht Julia Abel durch eine Rekonstruktion der systematischen Zusammenhänge im Frühwerk Benjamins deutlich, in dem der Begriff der Übersetzung eine besondere Rolle spielt. Erstmals wird der Essay als Reaktion auf zeitgenössische Problemlagen in Philosophie und Literatur erkennbar, als Antwort auf ästhetische Konzepte des George-Kreises, Rudolf Borchardts und Hugo von Hofmannsthals und schließlich als Entwurf einer Theorie, die den von Hellingrath wiederentdeckten Pindar-Übersetzungen Hölderlins gerecht werden will.
