    Charkiw in der Ukraine war in den 1920er-Jahren ein aktives Zentrum der Avantgarde, das mehrfach an Peripherien gelegen war: Räumlich abseits der Machtzentren und zeitlich in der letzten Phase der Avantgarde positioniert, differierten auch die künstlerischen Praktiken von tonangebenden Erscheinungen, etwa indem sie überholte Konzepte der Abstraktion mit funktionalistischen Ansätzen vereinten. Die Formationen Nova Generacija (1927-1931) und Avanhard (1925-1929) interagierten dabei rege mit der Avantgarde in Ost und West. Vera Faber analysiert nun erstmals umfassend die dabei zum Einsatz kommenden polemischen Praktiken der Aus-, Ab- und Eingrenzung anhand von Programmtexten und literarischen sowie künstlerischen Arbeiten.

    After postmodern critique has deconstructed, decentered, and displaced order and identity on all levels, we are faced with the Humpty Dumpty question of how to put the pieces back together again. This book brings together the seldom associated discourses of hermeneutics, actor-network theory, and new media in order to formulate a theory of a global network society. Hermeneutics re-opens the question of unity in a fragmented world. Actor-network theory reinterprets the construction of meaning as networking. New media studies show how networking is done. Networks arise, are maintained, and are transformed by communicative actions that are governed by network norms that make up a social operating system. The social operating system offers an alternative to the imperatives of algorithmic logic, functionality, and systemic closure that dominate present day solutions to problems of over-complexity in all areas. The world of meaning constructed by the social operating system is a mixed reality in which filters and layers replace the physical restraints of space and time as parameters of knowing and acting. Society and nature, humans and non-humans come together in a socio-sphere consisting of hybrid, heterogeneous actor-networks. This book proposes reinterpreting hermeneutics as networking and networking as guided by a social operating system whose norms are based on new media. There emerges a theory for a global network society described by different concepts than those typical of Western modernity

    In dieser Masterarbeit wird eine konstruktivistische Diskursanalyse durchgeführt um die These zu unterstützen, dass eine grundlegende Umgestaltung im amerikanischen Verständnis der türkisch-amerikanischen Beziehung unter Präsident Obama im zuge eines übergeordneten Wandels der amerikanischen Außenpolitik stattgefunden hat. Anhand einer analytischen Betrachtung diverser hochrangiger Diskurse und Präsidenten- Reden seit der Ära Ronald Reagans versucht diese Arbeit den chronologischen Weg der amerikanischen Au- ßenpolitik anhand politischer Sprache, politischem Handeln und struktureller Veränderung, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Türkei, aufzuzeigen. Die Formbarkeit dieser Beziehung soll mittels Anwendung der konstruktivistischen Theorie besonders hervorgehoben werden. Zudem wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie sich das Verständnis amerikanischer Führungspolitiker in Bezug auf ihre Rolle in der Welt und der Beziehung zur Türkei, abseits des strikten Kurs des Realismus, in den letzten Jahrzehnten verändert hat Using a constructivist discourse analysis, this thesis argues that there has been a fundamental shift in the American understanding of the U.S.-Turkish relationship under President Obama, situated within a broader change in the nature of American foreign policy making. By analyzing presidential and other high-level dis- course beginning in the Reagan era, this thesis examines the chronological path of American foreign policy, specifically in relation to Turkey, delving into political language, actions, and structural changes. By engaging constructivist theory, this thesis highlights the fluid nature of relations, endeavoring to answer the underly- ing question of how the high-level understanding of the U.S. role in world affairs generally, and in relation to Turkey specifically, has moved beyond a strict realist foundation over the past decades.

Es zeigt sich: Diese pragmatistische Rekonstruktion einer medialen »Welt-Erschließung« wird - anders als der weit verbreitete Konstruktivismus - der realistischen Intuition einer Soziologie als empirischer Wissenschaft gerecht. When translation constraints between horizons of social meaning create the cardinal effect of social distinction, a pertinent sociology of multiple distinction can disclose its own reference to reality, such as that of any other context, only as a kind of »indirect reference«. Joachim Renn`s analysis takes a media-theory detour: Initially it focuses on the meaning of different communication media for the formation of potential objects of reference that is logical in itself, and then it focuses on the reference claims of sociology itself. That shows: This pragmatic reconstruction of a medial »indexing of the world« does - unlike the widely-spread constructivism - justice to the realistic intuition of sociology as an empirical science.

    After postmodern critique has deconstructed, decentered, and displaced order and identity on all levels, we are faced with the Humpty Dumpty question of how to put the pieces back together again. This book brings together the seldom associated discourses of hermeneutics, actor-network theory, and new media in order to formulate a theory of a global network society. Hermeneutics re-opens the question of unity in a fragmented world. Actor-network theory reinterprets the construction of meaning as networking. New media studies show how networking is done. Networks arise, are maintained, and are transformed by communicative actions that are governed by network norms that make up a social operating system. The social operating system offers an alternative to the imperatives of algorithmic logic, functionality, and systemic closure that dominate present day solutions to problems of over-complexity in all areas. The world of meaning constructed by the social operating system is a mixed reality in which filters and layers replace the physical restraints of space and time as parameters of knowing and acting. Society and nature, humans and non-humans come together in a socio-sphere consisting of hybrid, heterogeneous actor-networks. This book proposes reinterpreting hermeneutics as networking and networking as guided by a social operating system whose norms are based on new media. There emerges a theory for a global network society described by different concepts than those typical of Western modernity

    Biographical note: David J. Krieger is co-director at the Institute for Communication & Leadership, Lucerne, Switzerland. His research focus is on new media, communication, system theory, and network theory. Andréa Belliger is pro-rector of the Teacher's Training University of Lucerne and co-director of the Institute for Communication & Leadership. Her research focus is on e-society, new media, communication science, and e-health. After postmodern critique has deconstructed, decentered, and displaced order and identity on all levels, we are faced with the Humpty Dumpty question of how to put the pieces back together again. This book brings together the seldom associated discourses of hermeneutics, actor-network theory, and new media in order to formulate a theory of a global network society. Hermeneutics re-opens the question of unity in a fragmented world. Actor-network theory reinterprets the construction of meaning as networking. New media studies show how networking is done. Networks arise, are maintained, and are transformed by communicative actions that are governed by network norms that make up a social operating system. The social operating system offers an alternative to the imperatives of algorithmic logic, functionality, and systemic closure that dominate present day solutions to problems of over-complexity in all areas. The world of meaning constructed by the social operating system is a mixed reality in which filters and layers replace the physical restraints of space and time as parameters of knowing and acting. Society and nature, humans and non-humans come together in a socio-sphere consisting of hybrid, heterogeneous actor-networks. This book proposes reinterpreting hermeneutics as networking and networking as guided by a social operating system whose norms are based on new media. There emerges a theory for a global network society described by different concepts than those typical of Western modernity.

    Why do states intentionally and publicly violate international norms, even when they anticipate (social or material) costs for doing so? Unfortunately, constructivist scholarship on norm-dynamics lacks a well-developed account of deliberate and open norm transgressions. This gap in the literature has led to a limited understanding of resistance to international norms. Constructivist scholarship on norm-dynamics often treats compliance as an inherent “good” that all states move toward. However, I argue that public acts of norm noncompliance can serve important social functions and are strategically performed by states in pursuit of specific (social or material) ends. I demonstrate that states will overtly and self-consciously violate international norms to either assert their identity as insiders or outsiders in international society or to contest those categories altogether. Drawing on work in sociology and the social psychology of deviance, I develop the concept of norm transgressions to capture intentional and purposeful violations of international norms. I present a typology of norm transgressions (rejective, adaptive, inclusionary, and exclusionary) to provide the groundwork for future scholarship on overresistance to international norms. The concept of norm transgression bears important implications for our understanding of deviancy, institutional compliance, and normative change in international politics.

    When translation constraints between horizons of social meaning create the cardinal effect of social distinction, a pertinent sociology of multiple distinction can disclose its own reference to reality, such as that of any other context, only as a kind of »indirect reference«. Joachim Renn`s analysis takes a media-theory detour: Initially it focuses on the meaning of different communication media for the formation of potential objects of reference that is logical in itself, and then it focuses on the reference claims of sociology itself. That shows: This pragmatic reconstruction of a medial »indexing of the world« does - unlike the widely-spread constructivism - justice to the realistic intuition of sociology as an empirical science.

    Charkiw in der Ukraine war in den 1920er-Jahren ein aktives Zentrum der Avantgarde, das mehrfach an Peripherien gelegen war: Räumlich abseits der Machtzentren und zeitlich in der letzten Phase der Avantgarde positioniert, differierten auch die künstlerischen Praktiken des Panfuturismus und des Konstruktiven Dynamismus von tonangebenden Erscheinungen. So wurden etwa in der späten Phase der Avantgarde überholte Konzepte der Abstraktion mit funktionalistischen Ansätzen vereint. Die Formationen Nova Generacija (1927-1931) und Avanhard (1925-1929) mit Mychajl' Semenko und Valerijan Poliscuk an der Spitze interagierten dabei rege mit den Avantgarden in Ost und West.
    Vera Faber analysiert nun erstmals umfassend die dabei zum Einsatz kommenden polemischen Praktiken der Aus-, Ab- und Eingrenzung - anhand von Programmtexten und literarischen sowie künstlerischen Arbeiten.

    Samuel Barkin's "Realist Constructivism" has often been read as a way to synthesise realist theory and constructivist meta-theory. Guzzini argues that it is better understood as an attempt to combine realist foreign policy doctrine with constructivist theory. It is an invitation to explore constructivism as the theoretical backbone to inform a prudent foreign policy. Indeed, this DIIS Working Paper argues that a constructivist foreign policy doctrine informs realises the aim of prudence just as well, if not better, as realist maxims.
