    Dieses Buch bietet die erste literatur- und medientheoretisch fundierte Studie zu Blickbewegungen im Bilderbuch. Der empirischen Untersuchung geht eine umfassende theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit der Räumlichkeit und Paratextualität des Bilderbuchs voraus, die bislang noch nicht vorliegt. Die Rezeptionsstudie setzt sich von Blickbewegungsstudien aus der experimentellen Psychologie ab, indem sie die Daten bei der möglichst ungesteuerten Rezeption authentischer Printbilderbücher erhebt. So gerät auch die Relevanz von Räumlichkeit und Materialität des Mediums für die Rezeption in den Blick.

    Dieser Band greift erstmals das Thema ‚Intermedialität‘, das seit einigen Jahren zu einem Leitbegriff der Kulturwissenschaften geworden ist, aus Sicht der Sprachwissenschaft auf. Er zeigt auf, wie tief medienspezifische Gegebenheiten und intermediale Bezüge die Gebrauchsformen von Sprache prägen. Sprache wird in den Beiträgen des Bandes als Spannungsphänomen theoretisiert, für das sowohl die Materialität seiner Erscheinungsformen wie seine medialen und kommunikativen Bezüge auf Nichtsprachliches konstitutiv sind.     Mit Bezug auf Greimas’ narrative Semiotik und die Kognitionswissenschaft entwickelt Richter seine Theorie des „narrativen Urteils“ als Kernstück „narrativer Problemverhandlung“. Eine Erzählung von Erfolg oder Misserfolg eines Handelns stellt ein kontingentes Geschehen dar, fällt aber damit oft gleichzeitig ein Urteil im Namen einer Ordnung, einer Ideologie: Das Gute wird belohnt, das Böse bestraft. Diese Fähigkeit des Erzählens, die Kontingenz des erzählten Einzelnen exemplarisch zu überschreiten oder zu verschleiern, ermöglicht auch die narrative Verhandlung theoretischer Probleme, die im Rahmen der Argumentation unlösbar scheinen. Ausführliche Analysen zweier solcher Problemverhandlungen, des Hiobproblems im Buch Hiob des AT sowie des Theodizeeproblems bei Leibniz, Voltaire, Linné und Kant, zeichnen nach, wie die analoge Projektion einer Erzählstruktur auf die jeweilige Problemkonstellation die Darstellung von Lösungen erlaubt, die innerhalb einer Argumentation willkürliche Setzungen bleiben müssen. Narrative Problemverhandlung kann damit widerstreitende Perspektiven vermitteln und neue Lösungswege zeigen, aber auch willkürliche Urteile zugunsten einer Perspektive rhetorisch zu legitimieren versuchen.

    The goal of this book is to formulate a modern theoretical approach for rhetorical studies in a variety of disciplines in the humanities, media research, and other cultural studies. The discipline of rhetoric originally concerned itself with linguistic forms of communication, and its basic theory was developed with such cases in mind. With respect to this ancient tradition, there are numerous books that provide a historical overview of the field. There is also a wide array of introductory works and research contributions that deal with the practice of political rhetoric. On the other hand, only a few 20th century academics have attempted to theoretically rehabilitate rhetoric (after its decline as an academic discipline in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries) and to give rhetorical theory a modern, new, and further reaching perspective. Two notable examples have been Kenneth Burke and Brian Vickers. The book begins with the assumption that rhetoric is not merely limited to linguistic action, but rather is present everywhere in the communicative world. Against this background, this work develops a modern theory of rhetoric, and demonstrates in twelve chapters how methodical rhetorical analysis can be done in selected practical fields of application (Literature, Music, Images, and Film).

    Metaphoric language is very much the product of human action, and many scholars now claim that metaphor in language arises from metaphors in thought. But the reasons for why we think metaphorically and speak (gesture) in these ways may be rooted in principles of self-organization that describe the existence, and forms, of many other animate and inanimate things, ranging from snowflakes to termite nests.     This open access book is a methodical treatise on narration in different types of media. A theoretical rather than a historical study, Transmedial Narration is relevant for an understanding of narration in all times, including our own. By reconstructing the theoretical framework of transmedial narration, this book enables the inclusion of all kinds of communicative media forms on their own terms. The treatise is divided into three parts. Part I presents established and newly developed concepts that are vital for formulating a nuanced theoretical model of transmedial narration. Part II investigates the specific transmedial media characteristics that are most central for realizing narratives in a plenitude of different media types. Finally, Part III contains brief studies in which the narrative potentials of painting, instrumental music, mathematical equations, and guided tours are illuminated with the aid of the theoretical framework developed throughout the book. Suitable for advanced students and scholars, this book provides tools to disentangle the narrative potential of any form of communication.

The presence of the game motif has often been noticed, but this study, the most comprehensive of its kind, shows how games operate in more complex ways than simple metaphor and can be syntheses of emblem and dramatic device. Drawing on seventeenth-century treatises, including Francis Willughby’s Book of Games, which only became available in print in 2003, and divided into chapters on Dice, Cards, Tables (Backgammon), and Chess, the book brings back into focus the symbolism and divinatory origins of games. The work of more than ten dramatists is analysed, from the Shakespeare and Middleton canon to rarer plays such as The Spanish Curate, The Two Angry Women of Abington and The Cittie Gallant. Games and theatre share common ground in terms of performance, deceit, plotting, risk and chance, and the early modern playhouse provided apt conditions for vicarious play. From the romantic chase to the financial gamble, and in legal contest and war, the twenty-first century is still engaging the game. With its extensive appendices, the book will appeal to readers interested in period games and those teaching or studying early modern drama, including theatre producers, and awareness of the vocabulary of period games will allow further references to be understood in non-dramatic texts.

Traditional tragedies may present us with a present when a calamity is staged, a decisive moment in which everything changes. However, modern performance, adaptation and new media can question the premises of that kind of present crisis and its fatality. By offering replays or alternative endings, experimental theatre, adaptation, time travel films and videogames reinvent the tragic experience of irreversible present time. This book offers the reader a fresh understanding of tragic character and agency through these new media’s exposure of the genre’s deep structure. Rebecca Bushnell is the School of Arts and Sciences Board of Overseers Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. The Emergence of Neuroscience and the German Novel: Poetics of the Brain revises the dominant narrative about the distinctive psychological inwardness and introspective depth of the German novel by reinterpreting the novel’s development from the perspective of the nascent discipline of neuroscience, the emergence of which is coterminous with the rise of the novel form. In particular, it asks how the novel’s formal properties—stylistic, narrative, rhetorical, and figurative—correlate with the formation of a neuroscientific discourse, and how the former may have assisted, disrupted, and/or intensified the medical articulation of neurological concepts. This study poses the question: how does this rapidly evolving field emerge in the context of nineteenth century cultural practices and what were the conditions for its emergence in the German-speaking world specifically? Where did neuroscience begin and how did it broaden in scope? And most crucially, to what degree does it owe its existence to literature?
