This book is a collection of texts that explore the analogy between organizing and narrating, between action and text. The raw material of everyday organizational life consists of disconnected fragments, physical and verbal actions that do not make sense when reported with simple chronology. Narrating is organizing this raw and fragmented material with the help of such devices as plot and characters. Simultaneously, organizing makes narration possible, because it orders people, things and events in time and place. The collection, written by organization researchers from many different countrie

"Culture, Discourse, and the Workplace adds new theoretical and methodological insights into the complex relationship between language, culture, and identity in professional settings. Examining the politics of language use at work and via a critical sociolinguistic approach, this book: - Utilises three case studies from institutional and business contexts to provide a unique illustration of participants' roles and negotiating membership within the business meeting; - Questions essentialist meanings of culture and the ways in which they constitute a powerful resource for employees to perpetuate or challenge the status quo in their professional setting; - Includes a core section on methodology for the Workplace Discourse researcher as well as a section dedicated to FAQs and a worked example on data analysis; - Provides future directions for Workplace Sociolinguistics as a field and makes a case for holistic research and multidisciplinary enquiry. Culture, Discourse, and the Workplace constitutes a key resource for students and teachers of Intercultural Communication and ESP and will also be of significant interest to researchers in the fields of workplace studies and business interaction"-- Introduction: Talking "culture" at work -- Culture, powerful metaphors and coterminous notions -- Aspects of the modern workplace -- Workplace discourse: Issues of theory and method -- Tricks of the trade - Q&A's on doing research in the workplace -- Cultural identity and the politics of difference revisited -- Group identity, teamwork and meeting talk -- Case studies

De-Gendering Gendered Occupations brings together contributions from researchers on language and gender studies and workplace discourse to unpack and challenge hegemonic gendered norms encoded in what are traditionally considered female occupations. The volume integrates a range of theoretical frameworks, including conversation analysis, pragmatics, and interactional sociolinguistics, to analyse data from such professions as primary education, healthcare, and speech and language therapy across various geographic contexts. Through this lens, the first part of the book examines men's linguistic practices with the second part offering a comparative analysis of 'male' and 'female' discourse. The settings discussed here allow readers to gain insights into the ways in which cultural, professional, and gendered identity intersect for practitioners in these professions and in turn, future implications for discourse around gendered professions more generally. This book will be key reading for students and researchers in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, gender studies, cultural studies, and professional discourse
