In this study, we present the first results of a telephone survey that was conducted among families raising a school-age child. Parents and children were asked about their experiences with online teaching following Covid-19 lockdowns. The data collection took place in April 2021, just after one of the compulsory distance learning periods covering the entire education system. We present data on the proportion of households with difficulties in providing an adequate learning environment during distance learning by the labour market situation of carers data on the tools and platforms used by students during distance learning, the changes in teaching time and time spent with learning, what teaching methods were typically used during online education. The study provides a simple descriptive analysis of these issues.

Some African scholars have challenged the idea that African societies are still communitarian largely due to urbanisation and cosmopolitanism. Using Ghana as a case study, this essay aims to address this protest by analysing the speeches of the president of Ghana and some of the attitudes and behaviours of Ghanaians during the lockdown days of the COVID 19 pandemic in Ghana to test African communitarian status. The essay deploys the ideological analysis method of rhetorical criticism to examine and analyse the speeches of the president of Ghana on updates to the enhanced responses to the COVID 19 pandemic and content analysis of newspapers and online news portals to analyse the attitudes and behaviours of Ghanaians during the lockdown days of the pandemic. It is observed that the speeches of the president and some of the attitudes of Ghanaians during the lockdown inherently lean toward and are consistent with African communitarianism rather than hard-core liberalism and collectivism.

The COVID 19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the world, affecting not only physical health and the economy but also mental well being. This chapter provides an investigation of the causal link between lockdown measures a significant public health intervention and mental health. Our examination begins with an overview of the mental health landscape across various countries prior to the COVID 19 pandemic. We then summarize key insights from a range of surveys, reviews, and meta analyses concerning the pandemic's effect on mental health. Further, we delve into a detailed analysis of three noteworthy studies that employ natural experiments to investigate the effects of lockdowns on mental health in different countries. Despite their differing research designs, these studies converge on the conclusion that lockdowns have had a detrimental impact on mental health. The intensity of this effect, however, varies among different population groups. This suggests that lockdown measures have affected certain segments of the population more profoundly than others.

The interplay of work and gender has been of special interest within the science of work for many years. Current topics are constantly emerging at the interface, which have been little researched so far. In this volume, the focus is on issues from the following areas: (1) Menstruation-related work disability - a discourse analysis; (2) Women in organizational leadership under Covid 19; (3) The reconciliation of family, work, and volunteerism; (4) Are women happier in early retirement?; (5) Weight discrimination in private and professional life. All contributions were made at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Work Science at Leibniz Universität Hannover.
