Canada in the Frame explores a photographic collection held at the British Library that offers a unique view of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Canada. The collection, which contains in excess of 4,500 images, taken between 1895 and 1923, covers a dynamic period in Canada’s national history and provides a variety of views of its landscapes, developing urban areas and peoples. Colonial Copyright Law was the driver by which these photographs were acquired; unmediated by curators, but rather by the eye of the photographer who created the image, they showcase a grass-roots view of Canada during its early history as a Confederation.

Canada in the Frame describes this little-known collection and includes over 100 images from it. The author asks key questions about what it shows contemporary viewers of Canada and its photographic history, and about the peculiar view these photographs offer of a former part of the British Empire in a post-colonial age, viewed from the old ‘Heart of Empire’. Case studies are included on subjects such as urban centres, railroads and migration, which analyse the complex ways in which photographers approached their subjects, in the context of the relationship between Canada, the British Empire and photography.

Hensley and Steer look to join the conceptual tools of contemporary ecocriticism with the rich archive of nineteenth century thinking about imperial and ecological intertwinement. This collection of essays draws on that archive to demonstrate the relevance of Victorian thought for current theory and practice. Ecological Form argues that ecology, the empire, and literary thinking were inseparable during the Victorian period; and its claim that connections among these domains challenge the methodological assumptions of both contemporary ecocriticism and literary and cultural studies

The Routledge Companion to Literature and Emotion shows how the "affective turn" in the humanities applies to literary studies. Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma. This is a crucial guide to the ways in which new, interdisciplinary understandings of emotion and affect—in fields from neuroscience to social theory--are changing the study of literature and of the ways those new understandings are impacted by work on literature also.

Nostalgia not only played a decisive role in the outcome of the 2016 Brexit referendum – where it was most pointedly expressed in the infamous slogan ‘Take Back Control’ – but also shapes current British politics, culture, and society at large. The present monograph provides the first comprehensive critical analysis of this recent ubiquity of nostalgia from a British Cultural Studies perspective. Central to its newly developed narratological approach is the concept of the contemporary ‘master narrative of nostalgia’, the prevailing means of national self-assertion in Brexit Britain through which the dominant notions of British history and national identity are currently constructed. After discussing the master narrative’s most important nostalgic tropes found in recent political rhetoric, the main part of the study then analyses the ways in which contemporary fiction from different media (literature, film, TV) engages and interrelates with the master narrative of nostalgia. The six case studies focus on historical fiction about the Second World War and the end of the British Raj, as well as on novels from the so-called ‘BrexLit’ genre responding to the outcome of the 2016 EU referendum.

In ‘On Governmentality’, Michel Foucault linked the emergence of the science of political economy to a new kind of power unique to the modern order. Departing from this observation, but integrating the wider imperial context of this historical shift by examining developments in the British Empire, the first part of this study analyses how the science of political economy was linked to the emergence of new identities, social practices as well as forms of political intervention and resistance in not only metropolises and colonies, but also the wider context of the Pax Britannica. The second part of the study analyses how these global entanglements shaped the conditions which made the emergence of anti- and postcolonial counter discourses and practices in India possible. By tracing how Indian imaginings of postcolonial modernity and concomitant practices of resistance emerged from engagements with globally circulating discourses on political economy, it shows the mutual entanglement between Western modernity and its postcolonial alternatives

By tracing how Indian imaginings of postcolonial modernity and concomitant practices of resistance emerged from engagements with globally circulating discourses on political economy, it shows the mutual entanglement between Western modernity and its postcolonial alternatives.
