    Die Descriptio urbis Romae (um 1450) des italienischen Humanisten Leon Battista Alberti (1404–1472) ist eine ungewöhnliche Rombeschreibung. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Vertretern der Gattung besteht sie aus 16 Tabellen mit 175 vormodernen Polarkoordinaten und einer Zeichenanleitung, die selbst einen mittelmäßig begabten Zeichner zur Herstellung einer Karte des zeitgenössischen Rom befähigen sollte. Die scheinbare Modernität von Albertis Stadtkartierung hat zu dem euphorischen Urteil geführt, der Humanist habe wesentliche Konzepte digitaler Darstellungstechnik erfunden – und das rund 500 Jahre vor ihrer Marktreife. Insbesondere ist die Rede von Algorithmen, die mangels technischer Möglichkeiten nur analog, mit Stift und Papier umsetzbar gewesen seien. Gabriel Siemoneit nimmt einen deutlich pessimistischeren Standpunkt ein und argumentiert dafür, dass Albertis Descriptio urbis Romae keinen Algorithmus nach modernem Verständnis beschreibt. Anders als zu erwarten, liefert das exakte Befolgen der Zeichenanleitung nicht das gewünschte, geschweige denn immer das gleiche Ergebnis
