    "One of the distinctive characteristics of the writings of Ambrose of Milan is his frequent and lengthy borrowings from the works of Philo of Alexandria. He treated the 1st-century Jewish philosopher as an authoritative predecessor and made use of his works to a far greater extent than any other Church Father did. This study seeks to fill a lacuna in the current scholarship by investigating Ambrose's use of Philo in his collection of letters, focusing on a set of three letters concerning the topic of the Genesis creation account (Ep. 29, 31, & 34 [PL#43, 44, & 45]). In all three cases, Ambrose fielded questions on the Six Days of Creation (Hexaemeron) by drawing upon Philo's treatise De opificio mundi. Each of these letters is undeniably Philonic and yet uniquely Ambrosian. This study seeks to clarify why Ambrose found Philo to be particularly valuable in spite of his Jewishness and also to investigate how Ambrose interpreted, adapted, and ultimately re-created his source"--

    Early manuscripts attest to Ambrose as the author of the five-book Latin version of the 'History of the Jewish War against the Romans', which Flavius Josephus had given in Greek in seven books. This attribution of the work, which has mostly run under the pseudonym 'Hegesippus' since around 830, is confirmed in this study by recourse to prose rhythm, particle usage, idiomatic word combinations, as well as the use and further development of classical "ations (as measured by Aelius Donat and Arusianus Messius) against today's communis opinio, and the origin (in Pannonian Sirmium) is narrowed down to the years 367-372. The second part sheds light on the historiographical technique and historical interpretation of the early Ambrose, his demythicisation of the priestly prophet, general and historian Josephus, whose fictional self-stylisation as the god-sent herald of Vespasian's future he systematically banishes from his account. Detailed analyses explain the new structure of the work, its literary form based on the "classical" historians Sallust, Livy, Tacitus and Suetonius with a distinctly Vergilian and Sallustian colouring and the specifically Ambrosian view of the Roman generals and emperors from Pompey and Julius Caesar to Titus and Domitian. Above all, however, is the image of the Christian interpreter of biblical, above all Old Testament writings, who, even before his episcopal office, sharpened Josephus' criticism of his fellow tribesmen who had deviated from the tradition of the fathers into an anti-Jewish polemic and, following Origen and Eusebius, developed a concept of history in which the Jewish-Messianic expectation of salvation was overtaken by the appearance of Christ Frühe Handschriften bezeugen Ambrosius als den Verfasser der in fünf Bücher umgestalteten lateinischen Version der 'Geschichte des Jüdischen Krieges gegen die Römer', die Flavius Josephus in sieben Büchern griechisch vorgegebenen hatte. Diese Zuschreibung des seit ca. 830 meist unter dem Pseudonym 'Hegesippus' laufenden Werkes wird in dieser Studie u. a. durch Rekurs auf Prosarhythmus, Partikelgebrauch, idiomatische Wortkombination, ferner auf Nutzung und Fortentwicklung von Klassikerzitaten (gemessen an Aelius Donat und Arusianus Messius) gegen die heutige communis opinio gesichert, die Entstehung (im pannonischen Sirmium) auf die Jahre 367-372 eingegrenzt. Der zweite Teil beleuchtet historiographische Technik und Geschichtsdeutung des frühen Ambrosius, seine Entmythisierung des priesterlichen Propheten, Feldherrn und Geschichtsschreibers Josephus, dessen fiktionale Selbststilisierung zum gottgesandten Künder der Zukunft Vespasians er systematisch aus seiner Darstellung verbannt. Detaillierte Analysen erläutern die neue Werkstruktur, ihre an den "klassischen" Geschichtsdarstellern Sallust, Livius, Tacitus und Sueton orientierte literarische Form mit ausgeprägtem vergilischen und sallustischen Kolorit und die spezifisch ambrosianische Sicht auf die römischen Feldherrn und Kaiser von Pompeius und Julius Caesar bis zu Titus und Domitian. Über allem aber steht das Bild des christlichen Interpreten biblischer, vor allem alttestamentlicher Schriften, der die Kritik des Josephus an seinen von der Tradition der Väter abgewichenen Stammesgenossen schon vor dem Bischofsamt zur antijüdischen Polemik zuspitzt und in Anlehnung an Origenes und Eusebius ein Geschichtskonzept entwickelt, in dem die jüdisch-messianische Heilserwartung durch das Erscheinen Christi überholt worden ist

    Die Verknüpfung von Alter und Weisheit wird in der antiken paganen und biblischen Literatur so ambivalent beurteilt, dass Zustimmung sowie Ablehnung des Konzepts stets nebeneinander existierten. Während sich die Vorstellung der Altersweisheit in der antiken Literatur als stabil und variabel zugleich erwies, blieb deren systematische Untersuchung in der Forschung bisher lückenhaft. Die Dissertation gibt nicht nur einen Überblick über die Bedeutungsnuancen der antiken Weisheitsvorstellung und die variablen Altersbilder, sondern beschäftigt sich besonders mit der Frage, inwiefern die spätantiken Bischöfe Ambrosius und Paulinus pagane und biblische Traditionen zur Vorstellung der Altersweisheit aufgreifen und zu christlichen Konzepten umarbeiten. Mögliche Kontinuitäten, Modifikationen und Neuerungen im Umgang mit den tradierten Motiven werden so als spezifisch spätantik-christlich eruiert. Beide Bischöfe trugen zur Etablierung der christianisierten Verknüpfung von sapientia und senectus bei, sodass die Konstruktion der Altersweisheit auch in der Spätantike zu einem Stück antiker Geistesgeschichte wurde, anhand derer sich gesellschaftliche und sprachliche, philosophische und religiöse Konventionen, Strömungen und Wandlungen nachzeichnen lassen.

    Die Verknüpfung von Alter und Weisheit wird in der antiken paganen und biblischen Literatur so ambivalent beurteilt, dass Zustimmung sowie Ablehnung des Konzepts stets nebeneinander existierten. Während sich die Vorstellung der Altersweisheit in der antiken Literatur als stabil und variabel zugleich erwies, blieb deren systematische Untersuchung in der Forschung bisher lückenhaft. Die Dissertation gibt nicht nur einen Überblick über die Bedeutungsnuancen der antiken Weisheitsvorstellung und die variablen Altersbilder, sondern beschäftigt sich besonders mit der Frage, inwiefern die spätantiken Bischöfe Ambrosius und Paulinus pagane und biblische Traditionen zur Vorstellung der Altersweisheit aufgreifen und zu christlichen Konzepten umarbeiten. Mögliche Kontinuitäten, Modifikationen und Neuerungen im Umgang mit den tradierten Motiven werden so als spezifisch spätantik-christlich eruiert. Beide Bischöfe trugen zur Etablierung der christianisierten Verknüpfung von sapientia und senectus bei, sodass die Konstruktion der Altersweisheit auch in der Spätantike zu einem Stück antiker Geistesgeschichte wurde, anhand derer sich gesellschaftliche und sprachliche, philosophische und religiöse Konventionen, Strömungen und Wandlungen nachzeichnen lassen.

    Early manuscripts attest to Ambrose as the author of the five-book Latin version of the 'History of the Jewish War against the Romans', which Flavius Josephus had given in Greek in seven books. This attribution of the work, which has mostly run under the pseudonym 'Hegesippus' since around 830, is confirmed in this study by recourse to prose rhythm, particle usage, idiomatic word combinations, as well as the use and further development of classical "ations (as measured by Aelius Donat and Arusianus Messius) against today's communis opinio, and the origin (in Pannonian Sirmium) is narrowed down to the years 367-372. The second part sheds light on the historiographical technique and historical interpretation of the early Ambrose, his demythicisation of the priestly prophet, general and historian Josephus, whose fictional self-stylisation as the god-sent herald of Vespasian's future he systematically banishes from his account. Detailed analyses explain the new structure of the work, its literary form based on the "classical" historians Sallust, Livy, Tacitus and Suetonius with a distinctly Vergilian and Sallustian colouring and the specifically Ambrosian view of the Roman generals and emperors from Pompey and Julius Caesar to Titus and Domitian. Above all, however, is the image of the Christian interpreter of biblical, above all Old Testament writings, who, even before his episcopal office, sharpened Josephus' criticism of his fellow tribesmen who had deviated from the tradition of the fathers into an anti-Jewish polemic and, following Origen and Eusebius, developed a concept of history in which the Jewish-Messianic expectation of salvation was overtaken by the appearance of Christ Frühe Handschriften bezeugen Ambrosius als den Verfasser der in fünf Bücher umgestalteten lateinischen Version der 'Geschichte des Jüdischen Krieges gegen die Römer', die Flavius Josephus in sieben Büchern griechisch vorgegebenen hatte. Diese Zuschreibung des seit ca. 830 meist unter dem Pseudonym 'Hegesippus' laufenden Werkes wird in dieser Studie u. a. durch Rekurs auf Prosarhythmus, Partikelgebrauch, idiomatische Wortkombination, ferner auf Nutzung und Fortentwicklung von Klassikerzitaten (gemessen an Aelius Donat und Arusianus Messius) gegen die heutige communis opinio gesichert, die Entstehung (im pannonischen Sirmium) auf die Jahre 367-372 eingegrenzt. Der zweite Teil beleuchtet historiographische Technik und Geschichtsdeutung des frühen Ambrosius, seine Entmythisierung des priesterlichen Propheten, Feldherrn und Geschichtsschreibers Josephus, dessen fiktionale Selbststilisierung zum gottgesandten Künder der Zukunft Vespasians er systematisch aus seiner Darstellung verbannt. Detaillierte Analysen erläutern die neue Werkstruktur, ihre an den "klassischen" Geschichtsdarstellern Sallust, Livius, Tacitus und Sueton orientierte literarische Form mit ausgeprägtem vergilischen und sallustischen Kolorit und die spezifisch ambrosianische Sicht auf die römischen Feldherrn und Kaiser von Pompeius und Julius Caesar bis zu Titus und Domitian. Über allem aber steht das Bild des christlichen Interpreten biblischer, vor allem alttestamentlicher Schriften, der die Kritik des Josephus an seinen von der Tradition der Väter abgewichenen Stammesgenossen schon vor dem Bischofsamt zur antijüdischen Polemik zuspitzt und in Anlehnung an Origenes und Eusebius ein Geschichtskonzept entwickelt, in dem die jüdisch-messianische Heilserwartung durch das Erscheinen Christi überholt worden ist

    "One of the distinctive characteristics of the writings of Ambrose of Milan is his frequent and lengthy borrowings from the works of Philo of Alexandria. He treated the 1st-century Jewish philosopher as an authoritative predecessor and made use of his works to a far greater extent than any other Church Father did. This study seeks to fill a lacuna in the current scholarship by investigating Ambrose's use of Philo in his collection of letters, focusing on a set of three letters concerning the topic of the Genesis creation account (Ep. 29, 31, & 34 [PL#43, 44, & 45]). In all three cases, Ambrose fielded questions on the Six Days of Creation (Hexaemeron) by drawing upon Philo's treatise De opificio mundi. Each of these letters is undeniably Philonic and yet uniquely Ambrosian. This study seeks to clarify why Ambrose found Philo to be particularly valuable in spite of his Jewishness and also to investigate how Ambrose interpreted, adapted, and ultimately re-created his source"--
