    The Rijksmuseum’s History Department holds a remarkable early eighteenthcentury album titled Regtspleging van Oldenbarnevelt (The Trial of Oldenbarnevelt). The album contains a collection of thirty-eight watercolour drawings on parchment with written explanations on paper and deals with the infamous trial of the Land’s Advocate. At its heart are cartoons of the twenty-four judges who signed Oldenbarnevelt’s death warrant, with the judges depicted as animals. The Rijksmuseum album is similar to albums in the National Library of the Netherlands and Rotterdam City Archives. In this article we show that Oldenbarnevelt’s judges continued to be subjects of general interest for more than a century. We locate the satirical portrayal of the judges as animals in the broader tradition of animal allegories used as a vehicle for political criticism, and explore the function of the album. It probably served as a key to a painting – not Cornelis Saftleven’s famous work Satire op de berechting van Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (Satire of the Trial of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt) in the Rijksmuseum, but a later composition by an anonymous artist now in the Six Collection. Finally, we come to the conclusion that the album is part of a game of concealment and revelation that is typical of the Remonstrants’ memorial culture.

The seventy poems in this bilingual edition are among the largest and most representative offering of her work in English, with particular emphasis on the period since 1967.     Die Geschichte eines Massenmediums, das vor dem Fernsehzeitalter von zentraler Bedeutung war - für die Aneignung von Weltwissen und das Erlernen von Konsum. Als Gratisbeigaben zu Markenprodukten wurden Sammelbilder seit den 1870er Jahren millionenfach ausgegeben, gesammelt, getauscht und in Alben eingeklebt. Sie prägten das Weltbild von Generationen. Judith Blume erzählt die Geschichte eines Massenmediums, das in seinem Einfluss auf die Wissens- und Konsumgeschichte der deutschen Gesellschaft kaum zu unterschätzen ist, anhand von vier exemplarischen Studien, die sich jeweils einer Firma widmen: von den Anfängen des enzyklopädischen Blicks auf die Welt in der bürgerlichen Konsumkultur zu den schichtenübergreifenden Zigarettenbildern der 1920er/30er Jahre; von der Herstellung einer Volksgemeinschaft in den nationalsozialistischen Alben bis zum Wiederaufleben des Mediums als ▶wertvolles Jugendbuch̨ in der frühen Bundesrepublik. Im Fokus stehen dabei nicht einzelne Bilder oder Motive, sondern das Album als ordnende und sinnstiftende (Bild-)Instanz. Das Besondere dieses medialen Formats zeigt die Autorin einführend mit Hilfe von Patentschriften auf. Im Blick auf die jeweiligen Distributions- und Rezeptionsformen, auf die Bildprogramme und -praktiken werden neben der kulturhistorischen auch die ökonomische und politische Dimension des populärkulturellen Mediums offensichtlich.

    Manuscript albums are oftentimes contradictory objects: ephemeral yet monumental, coherent yet inviting change. Collecting items made by others, owners form their albums as representations of their selves, their worlds, and their traditions. The volume’s contributors – who come from musicology, European history, English literary studies, and Islamic art history – explore a set of these challenging manuscripts while addressing questions of manuscript studies through their respective disciplinary lenses. The albums under investigation range from Early Modern Stammbücher, or alba amicorum, to albums assembled jointly by nineteenth-century cultural elites, and from muraqqaʿs of the Persianate world to English and North American friendship albums, including some kept by women. This book is the first contribution to the comparative study of manuscript albums, focusing on their materiality and analysing the practices of all those involved in making and using them.
