    The Berry, Levinsohn, and Pakes (1995, BLP) model is widely used to obtain parameter estimates of market forces in differentiated product markets. The results are often used as an input to evaluate economic activity in a structural model of demand and supply. Precise estimation of parameter estimates is therefore crucial to obtain realistic economic predictions. The present paper combines the BLP model and the logit mixed logit model of Train (2016) to estimate the distribution of consumer heterogeneity in a flexible and parsimonious way. A Monte Carlo study yields asymptotically normally distributed and consistent estimates of the structural parameters. With access to micro data, the approach allows for the estimation of highly flexible parametric distributions. The estimator further allows to introduce correlations between tastes, yielding more realistic demand patterns without substantially altering the procedure of estimation, making it relevant for practitioners. The BLP estimator is established to yield biased and inconsistent results when the underlying distributional shape is non-normally distributed. An application shows the estimator to perform well on a real world dataset and provides similar estimates as the BLP estimator with the option of specifying consumer heterogeneity as a function of a polynomial, step function or spline, resulting in a flexible estimation procedure

    Das IfM Bonn untersucht anhand einer repräsentativen Trendstudie für den Zeitraum 2007 bis 2017, wie KMU dem demografischen Wandel begegnen. Demnach sind die KMU aktuell besser als 2007 über den demografischen Wandel informiert. Die Mehrheit der KMU hat ihre Absatzstrategie an die bereits alternde Bevölkerung angepasst und mehr Maßnahmen zum Erhalt der Arbeitsfähigkeit und zur Bindung von Arbeitskräften als 2007 ergriffen. Auf die erwartete Knappheit von Arbeitskräften reagieren sie mit einer Rekrutierung von Jüngeren sowie Frauen, Älteren und Zuwanderern. Unternehmen in strukturell schwachen Gebieten sind stärker vom demografischen Wandel betroffen. Die Wirtschaftspolitik sollte daher auch regionale Besonderheiten bei der Entwicklung von Unterstützungsangeboten beachten. The IfM Bonn analyzes the reactions of SMEs to the demographic change in a trend study covering 2007 to 2017/18. The results show that SMEs are much better informed than before. The majority has already adapted their distribution strategy to the aging population and offers measures to strengthen the ties between employees and employer and to preserve the ability to work. SMEs address the expected lack of labor by focusing the recruitment process on women, elderly people and immigrants. On a regional level, demographic change seems to be more of a concern for enterprises in structurally weak areas. Therefore, economic policy should take regional disparities into account.

    This paper identifies and estimates the impact of firm entry and exit on plant-level productivity in Ethiopia as part of a selection mechanism that might be driving aggregate productivity growth in cities. Specifically, the paper investigates how firms' entry and exit contribute to the pace of factor reallocation and total factor productivity growth within industries-and whether these processes occur in higher numbers and rates in larger cities. The analysis is carried out using establishment census data from Ethiopia that cover the period from year 2000 to 2010. Importantly, these data include information on plants' physical outputs and their prices, which allows distinguishing between revenue-based measures of total factor productivity (TFPR) and those based on physical productivity (TFPQ). The analysis reveals that these two measures generate very different results under imperfect competition, suggesting that physical productivity measures (TFPQ) are better suited to examining firm dynamics when local producers have some degree of market power. In addition, the findings show that less productive (higher cost) firms are more likely to exit than their more productive (lower cost) rivals-but the analysis controls for producers' transport costs. This is consistent with the probability of firm exit being higher when transport costs are lower

    This paper considers the effect of different firm leadership on the innovative performance of firms from seven EU countries. We investigate whether owner-led or manager-led firms achieve a larger share of their turnover with product innovations. Economic theory does not propose clear answers to this question. In the empirical analysis, it turns out that the manager-led firms are more active innovators : the share of sales based on new products is larger if firms' managers do not hold any of the firms' capital. Surprisingly, there are no differences between the seven countries included in the regression analysis.
