    Provokation, Schriftstellersein als Lebensform und eine die Grenzen des Kanons sprengende Literatur: Um Jörg Fauser, Jürgen Ploog und Carl Weissner entsteht in den 1960er Jahren eine literarische Strömung, die sich an der amerikanischen Beatliteratur und dem Underground orientiert. Dieser Teil deutscher Literaturgeschichte stand lange im Schatten der Gruppe 47 und anderer. Simon Sahner zeigt auf, wie die Bewegung Fragen zum deutsch-amerikanischen Kultur- und Literaturtransfer, zur Autorinszenierung, dem Literaturbegriff und den Funktionsweisen des Literaturbetriebs berührt - und sich darüber hinaus bis heute auf die deutsche Literaturlandschaft auswirkt.

    A superbly crafted study of Hunter S. Thompson's literary formation, achievement, and continuing relevance. Savage Journey is a ";supremely crafted"; study of Hunter S. Thompson's literary formation and achievement. Focusing on Thompson's influences, development, and unique model of authorship, Savage Journey argues that his literary formation was largely a San Francisco story. During the 1960s, Thompson rode with the Hell's Angels, explored the San Francisco counterculture, and met talented editors who shared his dissatisfaction with mainstream journalism. Author Peter Richardson traces Thompson's transition during this time from New Journalist to cofounder of Gonzo journalism. He also endorses Thompson's later claim that he was one of the best writers using the English language as both a musical instrument and a political weapon. Although Thompson's political commentary was often hyperbolic, Richardson shows that much of it was also prophetic. Fifty years after the publication of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and more than a decade after his death, Thompson's celebrity continues to obscure his literary achievement. This book refocuses our understanding of that achievement by mapping Thompson's influences, probing the development of his signature style, and tracing the reception of his major works. It concludes that Thompson was not only a gifted journalist, satirist, and media critic, but also the most distinctive American voice in the second half of the twentieth century.

    Die bisherige Historiographie zur afrikanischen Dekolonisation hat häufig entscheidende Süd-Süd-Beziehungen übersehen. Philmon Ghirmais Untersuchung nimmt daher antikoloniale Konferenzen und internationale Organisationen in den Blick, die in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren in Ghana und Ägypten stattgefunden haben bzw. dort ihren Sitz hatten. Anhand von breitem Archivmaterial aus afrikanischen - aber auch europäischen - Ländern zeichnet die Studie nach, wie afrikanische Politiker und Aktivisten aus Kolonien und bereits unabhängigen Ländern zusammentrafen, Verbindungen knüpften und gemeinsam Wege in die Unabhängigkeit sowie transnationale postkoloniale Ordnungsvorstellungen entwickelten. In the 1950s, Ghana and Egypt developed into centres of anti-colonial struggle. This volume describes the transnational networks which established themselves there, driving forward African decolonisation.

    A vivid, imaginative response to the sensual and erotic in postwar American photography, with attention to the beauty of the nude, both male and femaleWhen photographer Coda Gray befriends a family with a special interest in a young boy, the motivation behind his special attention is difficult to grasp, “like water slipping through our fingers.” Can a man innocently love a boy who is not his own?Using fiction to reveal the truths about families, communities, art objects, love, and mourning, Like a Lake tells the story of ten-year-old Nico, who lives with his father (an Italian- American architect) and his mother (a Japanese-American sculptor who learned how to draw while interned during World War II). Set in the 1960s, this is a story of aesthetic perfection waiting to be broken. Nico’s midcentury modern house, with its Italian pottery jars along the outside and its interior lit by Japanese lanterns. The elephant-hide gray, fiberglass-reinforced plastic 1951 Eames rocking chair, with metal legs and birch runners. Clam consommé with kombu, giant kelp, yuzu rind, and a little fennel—in each bowl, two clams opened like a pair of butterflies, symbols of the happy couple. Nico’s boyish delight in developing photographs under the red safety light of Coda’s “Floating Zendo”— the darkroom boat that he keeps on Lake Tahoe. The lives of Nico, his parents, and Coda embody northern California’s postwar landscape, giving way to fissures of alternative lifestyles and poetic visions.     Mexican Ballads, Chicano Poems combines literary theory with the personal engagement of a prominent Chicano scholar. Recalling his experiences as a student in Texas, José Limón examines the politically motivated Chicano poetry of the 60s and 70s. He bases his analyses on Harold Bloom's theories of literary influence but takes Bloom into the socio-political realm. Limón shows how Chicano poetry is nourished by the oral tradition of the Mexican corrido, or master ballad, which was a vital part of artistic and political life along the Mexican-U.S. border from 1890 to 1930.Limón's use of Bloom, as well as of Marxist critics Raymond Williams and Fredric Jameson, brings Chicano literature into the arena of contemporary literary theory. By focusing on an important but little-studied poetic tradition, his book challenges our ideas of the American canon and extends the reach of Hispanists and folklorists as well.

    Philip Whalen was an American poet, Zen Buddhist, and key figure in the literary and artistic scene that unfolded in San Francisco in the 1950's and '60's. When the Beat writers came West, Whalen became a revered, much-loved member of the group. Erudite, shy, and profoundly spiritual, his presence not only moved his immediate circle of Beat cohorts, but his powerful, startling, innovative work would come to impact American poetry to the present day. Drawing on Whalen's journals and personal correspondence-particularly with Ginsberg, Kerouac, Snyder, Kyger, Welch, and McClure -David Schneider shows how deeply bonded these intimates were, supporting one another in their art and their spiritual paths. Dies gründet auf einer nur scheinbaren Paradoxie: In Wolfs vielgestaltigem Werk vollzieht sich der Zugriff auf Wirklichkeit gerade im Modus der Sabotage, Unterbrechung, Irritation oder Verzerrung - kurz: im Modus der Störung. Ausgehend von der langen Prosa fragt Barbara Bausch nach möglichen Formen literarischer Referenzialität. Dabei konturiert sie Ror Wolfs experimentelle und zugleich engagierte Poetik des ästhetisch produktiven Störens als Kreuzungspunkt verschiedenster Suchbewegungen des Prosaschreibens in den 1950er bis 1980er Jahren.

    Mexican Ballads, Chicano Poems combines literary theory with the personal engagement of a prominent Chicano scholar. Recalling his experiences as a student in Texas, José Limón examines the politically motivated Chicano poetry of the 60s and 70s. He bases his analyses on Harold Bloom's theories of literary influence but takes Bloom into the socio-political realm. Limón shows how Chicano poetry is nourished by the oral tradition of the Mexican corrido, or master ballad, which was a vital part of artistic and political life along the Mexican-U.S. border from 1890 to 1930.Limón's use of Bloom, as well as of Marxist critics Raymond Williams and Fredric Jameson, brings Chicano literature into the arena of contemporary literary theory. By focusing on an important but little-studied poetic tradition, his book challenges our ideas of the American canon and extends the reach of Hispanists and folklorists as well.
