Abstract: "The spatial thinking of French Jesuit Michel de Certeau (1925-1986) has been frequently discussed and put in context with the spatial turn. De Certeau's spatial theory is organized through a framework of dualistic key-categories: space and place, map and tour, strategy and tactic. However, his theory has more to offer than a formal pattern for describing spatial practices in urban space in the vein of French structuralism. The distinction between spaces and places rather holds a strong normative implication. His practical transformation from places into spaces thus not only plays an important role for his cultural history of everyday life developed in Arts de faire, but also in his work on historical writing and meta-historiography, and his research in early modern mysticism. This paper examines the main features of de Certeau's theory of space and their interdisciplinary appropriation, as well as discusses the potential of the spatial practice approach for social and cultural stu

Abstract: In this article we propose a line of argument which emphasizes the correlation between the imagination of intercultural competence and subjective strategies of situating the self (i.e. selfsituating) in a particular context. The presented conclusions are based on an empirical study which employed methods of alternative perspectives. The study's theoretical backbone is supported by postcolonial theories in order to analyze the essential factors guiding the involved actors during situations with inde- \ terminate intercultural properties. We present the (empirical) process in which two employees of the German Development Service and one member of the German embassy were interviewed before and after their respective training seminars. The focus during the interviews was set on the participants' imagination of cultural competence in order to bring to the fore the emergent relationship of individual biographical experiences with strategies of self-situating. \ This studies' results high

Abstract: This paper traces the link between three issues in the study of globalization. The first concerns the semantics of globalization. To understand how globalization might affect our lives, we need a form of literacy that transcends simple interpretation to reflection on the social significance of globalization discourse. This paper will also explore the consequences of the dominance of English. We will argue that globalization is a process that may involve a certain amount of homogenization but also always results in linguistic glocalization. Finally, the implications of the forces of globalization for intercultural communication will be investigated. Here three paradigms on cultural difference (cultural differentialism, cultural convergence and hybridization) will be presented and the interconnectedness of the above mentioned issues will be discussed
