    Die Schlacht von Stalingrad, die mit der Kapitulation der Deutschen Wehrmacht am 2. Februar 1943 militärisch endete, stellt seither einen markanten deutschen, russischen sowie inzwischen universellen Erinnerungsort dar. Die Publikation behandelt die bis heute reichenden fotografischen und filmischen Inszenierungen der Schlacht von Stalingrad als variantenreiche bildliche und musikalische Produktionen. Während in der zeitgenössischen Propaganda beider Kriegsparteien der Primat einer dynamisch verstandenen Motorik von kämpfendem Mensch und lärmender Maschine im Vordergrund stand, kam es in der Nachkriegszeit zu neuartigen Reflexionen des Schlachtgeschehens. Diese überblendeten weitgehend die realen militärhistorischen Umstände und sind als zeitgebundene Zeugnisse des Versuchs einer künstlerischen Bewältigung des unsagbaren Grauens zu bewerten. Dabei scheint das häufig benutzte Genre des Filmmelodrams nichts anderes zu sein als eine geeignet angesehene Form der Kompensation, die das Unbewältigbare des Geschehenskomplexes Stalingrad ins Emotionale auslagert, die jeweilige filmische Erzählung an prototypisch verfasste Protagonisten bindet und dadurch verallgemeinert. In diesem Sinne leistet das Buch einen Beitrag zur Aufarbeitung der medialen Kultur des modernen Krieges, die mit der Schlacht von Stalingrad einen als Urereignis zu verstehenden und immer wieder thematisierten Referenzort aufweist, der als "ewige Schlacht" zu beschreiben ist.

    Die »heldenhafte Verteidigung der Brester Festung« vom Sommer 1941 gehörte in der Sowjetunion zu den zentralen Staatsmythen und zu den wichtigsten Erinnerungsorten. Hier soll der Krieg begonnen haben, hier sollen die »ersten Ziegel im Fundament des Großen Sieges« gelegt worden sein. Die Dauer der Kämpfe wurde von realen acht auf 32 Tage aufgebauscht, für Kriegsgefangene war im Narrativ kein Raum. In diesem Buch wird die Militärgeschichte des Ereignisses neu geschrieben. Dabei werden Topoi des offiziellen sowjetischen Narrativs mit Quellenbefunden kontrastiert und dessen Entstehung und Entwicklung nachgezeichnet. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Umgang mit den in deutsche Gefangenschaft geratenen Festungsverteidigern. Schließlich werden Geschichte und Formen der Erinnerung untersucht. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Gedenkstätte »Brester Heldenfestung« mit ihren Museen

    "In December 1941, German police and their local collaborators shot 2,749 Jews at the beach in Šķēde, near Liepāja, Latvia. Twelve photographs were taken at the scene. These now-infamous images show people in extreme distress, sometimes without clothing. Some capture the very moments when women and children confronted their imminent deaths, while others show their dead bodies. They are nearly unbearable to look at--so why should we? Framing the Holocaust offers a multidimensional response to this question. While photographs are central to our memory of modern historical events, they often inhabit an ambivalent intellectual space. What separates the sincere desire to understand from voyeuristic curiosity? Comprehending atrocity photographs requires viewers to place themselves in the very positions of the perpetrators who took the images.
