    Anhand der transatlantischen Rezeptionslinie Goethe, Emerson, Whitman, Thomas Mann rekonstruiert die Studie eine vernachlässigte Facette der Literaturgeschichte: das Programm einer kollektiven Poetik. Bestimmend für diesen Ansatz ist der Versuch, das moderne Leben in der ganzen, reichen Mannigfaltigkeit seiner intellektuellen und sozialen Erscheinungsformen abzubilden, ohne zugleich das Bestreben einer lockeren Einheitsbildung aufzugeben. Gestalt erhält dieses Unterfangen einerseits in Aspekten der poetischen Form (Teil-Ganzes-Beziehung, Stimmenvielfalt, ironische Erzählhaltung), andererseits in gesellschaftlichen Strukturen und Positionen (Liberalität, Demokratie, Individualität). Die Genese der Kollektivpoetik ist dabei wesentlich geknüpft an die Gründung der Vereinigten Staaten als einer ebenso außerordentlichen wie eigenständigen Kulturnation; der kollektivpoetische Text setzt das Leitbild der USA, ja der offenen Gesellschaften insgesamt literarisch ins Werk: E pluribus unum. Following a trajectory that begins with Goethe and extends through Emerson, Whitman, and Mann, this study reconstructs a neglected facet of modernity: the effort to create a “collective poetics.” The work examines both aspects of literary form and ways of thinking about society and politics. The collective poetics of “E pluribus unum” represents the literary manifestation of the guiding principle of the US and of liberal democracy in general.

    This volume attempts for the first time a comprehensive view of the momentous process of German-American cultural transfer during the 18th and 19th centuries, which played an important part in the formation of an American national and cultural identity, a process to which the New England Transcendentalists contributed some of the decisive ingredients, but which has largely escaped the attention of German and American scholarship. In each chapter a specific problem is treated systematically from a clearly defined perspective, deficiencies of existing translation theories are exposed, so that in the concluding chapters 13 and 14 (with an unpublished memorandum by Alexander von Humboldt) a cohesive view of the entire process emerges.     Building on recent trends in the humanities and especially on scholarship done under the rubric of cultural transfer, this volume emphasizes the processes by which Americans took up, responded to, and transformed German cultural material for their own purposes. The fourteen essays by scholars from the US and Germany treat such topics as translation, the reading of German literature in America, the adaptation of German ideas and educational ideals, the reception and transformation of European genres of writing, and the status of the "German" and the "European" in celebrations of American culture and criticisms of American racism. The volume contributes to the ongoing re-conception of American culture as significantly informed by non-English-speaking European cultures. It also participates in the efforts of historians and literary scholars to re-theorize the construction of national cultures. Questions regarding hybridity, cultural agency, and strategies of acculturation have long been at the center of postcolonial studies, but as this volume demonstrates, these phenomena are not merely operative in encounters between colonizers and colonized: they are also fundamental to the early American reception and appropriation of German cultural materials.

Wie stark der Einfluss dieser Einwanderergruppe auf die amerikanische Identität war und bis heute ist, zeigen die Beiträge dieses Sammelwerks. 37 Autoren von diesseits und jenseits des Atlantiks und aus unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen schildern ihre Sicht der Dinge: Sie thematisieren die gegenseitigen Stereotypen und die Wahrnehmungen, die Deutsche und Amerikaner voneinander haben, gehen auf Deutschland als Motiv in der amerikanischen Literatur, u. a. bei Cooper und Twain, ein und untersuchen das Motiv "Amerika" in der deutschen Literatur bei Karl May und anderen.     Over the past hundred years Friedrich Nietzsche has proved to be one of the most fascinating and influential European thinkers to appear on the American scene. In recent years in particular, Nietzsche's ideas have had an overwhelming impact in every field of the humanities.
