    Many Voices in the Prose of Shulamith Hareven by Yael Balaban is the first book-size monograph dedicated to Hareven's oeuvre. It offers for the first time a deep understanding of Hareven's fiction, including her early short stories, City of Many Days, and Thirst - the Desert Trilogy. Hareven's unique voice has been missed by contemporary critics, as both her ideas and her poetics were ahead of her time: She wrote about sexual abuse long before the subject ever entered public discourse; wrote about the "second generation" of Holocaust survivors before the term was established; and created Mizrahi and Arab characters very different from the stereotypic characters in contemporary Hebrew literature. It is time to re-read Shulamith Hareven's work and discover beautiful stories suffused with moral and social sensitivity and a profound commitment to language and literature

It is time to re-read Shulamith Hareven's work and discover beautiful stories suffused with moral and social sensitivity and a profound commitment to language and literature "סיפוריה של שולמית הראבן (1930-2003) כתובים בעברית עשירה, רגישה וצלולה. דווקא משום כך נתפסו הסיפורים על ידי הביקורת כ"ליריים" ו"אימפרסיוניסטיים" וחסרים "התעמקות יתרה בשאלות לאום, דת ומוסר". טענה זו ורבות כמוה נראות היום מופרכות: הראבן כתבה על פגיעה מינית ותוצאותיה ההרסניות שנים רבות לפני שהנושא חדר לשיח החברתי בארץ; היא כתבה דרך עיניה של חולת נפש עשרים שנה לפני "נפלאות התבונה"; תיארה דמויות מזרחיות ופלסטיניות תוך כדי שבירת סטראוטיפים והיררכיות מקובלות והתייחסה ל"דור השני" לשואה כשהמושג עדיין לא היה קיים. בספרה של יעל בלבן נטען שרעיונותיה של הראבן הוחמצו כיוון שהקדימו את זמנם וחרגו מאופק הציפיות של המבקרים. הגיע אפוא הזמן לשוב ולקרוא את סיפוריה. בקריאה נטולת פניות מתגלות יצירות רוויות במחויבות וברגישות חברתית, שמעלות שאלות של מוסר אישי ואחריות לאומית מתוך הבנה חריפה, אמפתיה עמוקה ויושרה חסרת פשרות. קולות רבים בסיפורת של שולמית הראבן הוא הספר הראשון המוקדש ליצירת הראבן. לראשונה מוצעת בו קריאה מעמיקה של מכלול הסיפורת שלה, לרבות הסיפורים המוקדמים, "עיר ימים רבים", "בדידות", טרילוגיית "צמאון" וסיפורים בלתי מוכרים שלא כונסו בספרים. שלושה מסיפורים אלה אף מצורפים כנספח לספר". -- back cover
