    After all that has happened, German Studies in Israel is not at all self-evident, but represents a challenge in several respects. Who is challenged and what does the challenge consist of? In Israel the German language as medium and subject of German Studies was long considered taboo. A primary aim of German Studies is to prevent the cultural heritage of German Jewry from falling into oblivion in Israel, but rather to preserve it and - wherever possible - to enable it to thrive again. How can German Studies assert itself in the face of the worldwide streamlining of the university system in this field, which is also taking place in Israel?     Das Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes ist es die besonderen Themen, Perspektiven und Aufgaben einer in Israel praktizierten Germanistik zu untersuchen und vorzustellen. Schon der Titel „Spuren der Schrift“ verweist darauf, dass die Schwerpunktsetzung die jüdische Komponente der deutschen Literatur ist. Zugleich aber geht es auch um eine Erweiterung der Germanistik. Die deutsche und deutsch-jüdische Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte soll gegen den Strich der üblichen Deutungsschemata gelesen werden und das Verhältnis von Theorie und historischer Erfahrung im Rahmen der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur und Wissenschaft neu bestimmt werden. Dies stellen die hier versammelten Beiträge auf vier unterschiedliche Arten vor: Teil I widmet sich der Geschichte sowie den aktuellen Rahmenbedingungen einer Germanistik in Israel . Teil II untersucht die Möglichkeit der Entwicklung einer aus der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur selbst hervorgehenden Perspektive auf Literatur, und zwar auf jede Art von Literatur. Teil III diskutiert die allgemeine Frage des Bandes nach einer Germanistik in Israel an Fallbeispielen. Teil IV rückt die Sprache als ein Medium und Problem des Dichtens wie zugleich des philologischen Nachdenkens über Dichtung in den Mittelpunkt.

    Germanistik in Israel, das ist nach allem, was geschehen ist, vor allem eines, keine Selbstverständlichkeit nämlich, sondern eine Herausforderung. Doch worin genau besteht diese Herausforderung? Und für wen stellt sie sich als eine solche dar? Besteht sie vor allem darin, dass die deutsche Sprache, das Medium wie der Gegenstand einer jeden Germanistik also, in Israel für lange Jahre verpönt war? Besteht sie in der als Notwendigkeit empfundenen Aufgabe, das kulturelle Erbe des deutschen Judentums in Israel nicht in Vergessenheit geraten zu lassen, es vielmehr zu bewahren und, wo immer das möglich ist, wieder fruchtbar werden zu lassen? Und wie kann sich eine Germanistik angesichts der weltweiten und also auch in Israel statthabenden Durchrationalisierung des Universitätssystems in eben diesem Umfeld behaupten? Wem also nützt eine Germanistik in Israel? Und welchen wissenschaftlichen, politischen, kulturellen Zwecken kann, will, soll sie dienen?
