"George Eliot (born Mary Ann Evans, 1819-1880) was one of the most important writers of the Victorian period, as well as an important translator and essayist. Although such novels of provincial life as The Mill on the Floss and Middlemarch have seen her characterized as a thoroughly English writer, her reception and immersion in the literary, intellectual and political life of Europe was remarkable. Written by a team of leading international scholars, The Reception of George Eliot in Europe is the first comprehensive and systematic survey of Eliot's place in European culture. Exploring Eliot's deep knowledge of German literature and thought, her galvanizing influence on women novelists and translators in countries as diverse as Sweden and Spain, and her friendship with leading figures such as Mazzini, Turgenev and Liszt, this study reveals her full stature as a cosmopolitan writer and thinker. Including an historical timeline and a comprehensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources and translations, The Reception of George Eliot in Europe is an essential reference resource for anyone working in the field of Victorian Literature."--Bloomsbury Publishing pt. 1. A detailed assessment of D. H. Lawrence’s wide-ranging engagements across the verbal, visual and performance artsOffers the most comprehensive assessment yet of Lawrence’s relationship with the artsPlaces Lawrence in the context of the latest developments in fields including life writing, posthumanism, queer theory, and technology studiesConsiders Lawrence's continued reception in other people's art, and the nature of his relevance todayThis book includes twenty-eight innovative chapters by specialists from across the arts, reassessing Lawrence’s relationship to aesthetic categories and specific art forms in their historical and critical contexts. A new picture of Lawrence as an artist emerges, expanding from traditional areas of enquiry in prose and poetry into the fields of drama, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, dance, historiography, life writing and queer aesthetics. The Companion presents original research on topics such as Lawrence’s politics in his art, his representations of technology, his practice of revising and rewriting, and the relationship between his criticism and creation of prose, poetry and painting. This interdisciplinary Companion also makes a strong case for Lawrence’s continuing relevance and aesthetic power, as represented by case studies of his afterlives in biofiction, cinema, musical settings and portraiture

Provides a scholarly overview of the field of vegan literary studies, traversing the relationship between literature and veganism across a range of periods, cultures, and genresExamines literature, literary history, and literary genres through a vegan studies lensProvides an extensive annotated bibliography summarising existing work within the emergent field of vegan studiesOffers an invaluable resource for both established scholars and students looking to incorporate vegan literary studies in their own workIncludes cutting edge work from an international group of scholars specializing in literary researchHighlights the work of emerging and established scholars in this growing field of inquiryVegan literary studies has been crystallised over the past few years as a dynamic new specialism, with a transhistorical and transnational scope that both nuances and expands literary history and provides new tools and paradigms through which to approach literary analysis. Vegan studies has emerged alongside the 'animal turn' in the humanities. However, while veganism is often considered as a facet of animal studies, broadly conceived, it is also a distinct entity, an ethical delineator that for many scholars marks a complicated boundary between theoretical pursuit and lived experience. This collection of 25 essays maps and engages with that which might be termed the 'vegan turn' in literary theoretical analysis via essays that explore literature from across a range of historical periods, cultures and textual forms. It provides thematic explorations (such as veganism and race and veganism and gender) and covers a wide range of genres (from the philosophical essay to speculative fiction, and from poetry to the graphic novel, to name a few). The volume also provides an extensive annotated bibliography summarising existing work within the emergent field of vegan studies.

A detailed assessment of D. H. Lawrence's wide-ranging engagements across the verbal, visual and performance artsOffers the most comprehensive assessment yet of Lawrence's relationship with the artsPlaces Lawrence in the context of the latest developments in fields including life writing, posthumanism, queer theory, and technology studiesConsiders Lawrence's continued reception in other people's art, and the nature of his relevance todayThis book includes twenty-eight innovative chapters by specialists from across the arts, reassessing Lawrence's relationship to aesthetic categories and specific art forms in their historical and critical contexts. A new picture of Lawrence as an artist emerges, expanding from traditional areas of enquiry in prose and poetry into the fields of drama, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, dance, historiography, life writing and queer aesthetics. The Companion presents original research on topics such as Lawrence's politics in his art, his representations of technology, his practice of revising and rewriting, and the relationship between his criticism and creation of prose, poetry and painting. This interdisciplinary Companion also makes a strong case for Lawrence's continuing relevance and aesthetic power, as represented by case studies of his afterlives in biofiction, cinema, musical settings and portraiture.
