Application deadline
17.07.2019

Humboldt University, Berlin

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Cultural History and Theory, invites applications for a

Junior Professorship for Cultures of Knowledge”

starting as soon as possible. This is a W3 tenure track position. In order to verify whether the individual performance meets the requirements of a permanent employment, an evaluation process will be opened not later than after five years of service. The professorship will be funded by the „Bund-Länder-Programm zur Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses.“ The aim of the programme is to pave the way for a secure career in academia for early stage researchers. Tenure track professors at the HU Berlin are expected to carry out research and teach, as well as be active on various university committees and acquire leadership and management skills. The concrete requirements out of the framework catalogue [https://hu.berlin/tenuretrack_katalog] will be specified in the course of the appointment process.

The junior professorship will represent the field “Cultures of Knowledge” in research and teaching. It will address the heterogeneity, diversity, and plurality of cultures, the specific forms of knowledge and practices inherent in them, and their historical dimensions and future perspectives. Emphasis will be placed on the transcultural dimensions in the sense of local knowledge and the various forms of its global entanglement through migration, new technologies, and media.

The junior professorship will be part of the Department of Cultural History and Theory, with a secondary affiliation with the interdisciplinary Hermann von Helmholtz Center for Cultural Techniques. The professorship should contribute to the specific activities and formats in the context of the Humboldt Forum (a newly-created cultural center located in Berlin’s historical center) as well as the Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity. Image Space Material” (2019-2025).

We are looking for a person who covers the described field of the professorship in the teaching of cultural history and theory in the widest possible sense and who is qualified in one or more of the following specializations:

  • theories and methods of cultural history and theory
  • the combination of theoretical, historical, and practical perspectives
  • the analysis of cultural (including non-European) forms of knowledge and fundamental cultural practices as material- and object-oriented processes within the core themes of the Cluster of Excellence "Matters of Activity"
  • research on collections and with experts of other cultures as works "about cultures" (historical) and "with cultures" (future-oriented)

The candidate is expected to raise third-party funding.

Applicants must meet the legal requirements for professorial appointments in accordance with § 102c in connection with § 102a of the “Berliner Hochschulgesetz.”

HU is seeking to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and specifically encourages qualified female scholars to apply. Researchers from abroad are welcome to apply. Severely disabled applicants with equivalent qualifications will be given preferential consideration. People with a migration background are specifically encouraged to apply.
