The Department of German Studies in the School of International Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SILLC) at the University of Arizona is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor with an area of specialization in post 17th Century Literature and Culture. We are looking for a dynamic, interdisciplinary scholar and excellent teacher who will engage students through new critical approaches and methodologies in the field of trans-cultural German Studies with courses on multilingual, literary and cultural practices. Courses on critical race studies and digital humanities as the fields relate to German Studies are also a possibility. The new hire will design the curriculum for a course on German for Professional Usage and will contribute to designing new study abroad opportunities that are based on intercultural competencies and the workings of culture rather than German language proficiency. The successful candidate’s research profile should be interdisciplinary and should define an area of study in critical Trans-cultural German/European Studies that places the term “German” and “European” into complex global context. The trans-cultural focus should address border studies as it intersects with multilingual studies, translation studies, diaspora studies, literary studies, critical race studies, cultural studies, and digital humanities

The top candidate will have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Candidates should be highly collaborative, exploratory, and hardworking with strong potential for research and publication, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Near-native proficiency in English and German is required. A PhD in German Studies or a related field must be in hand by the time of the appointment. This benefits-eligible position and the appointment starts in August 2020.

The Department of German studies offers a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies, two minor tracks (German Language emphasis or German Culture emphasis), several courses of study for MA in German Studies, and a joint PhD in Transcultural German Studies. The Department is an AATG Center of Excellence and ranks 7th among German departments nationally.

The Department of German Studies strongly supports the University of Arizona’s diversity and inclusiveness strategic initiatives, which are designed to create an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate is expected to support diversity and inclusiveness efforts in the Department and the University.
