Die literarische Imagination von Klängen hebt verschiedene Machtkonfigurationen in Texten hervor, die einen postkolonialen Hintergrund haben, indem Unterdrückung und Herrschaft, aber auch Widerstand auf einer klanglichen Ebene veranschaulicht werden. Die Dissertation untersucht die politischen Aspekte literarischer Klänge (verstanden als intermodale Referenzen) anhand des Konzepts von Gewalt: Literarische Klänge vermitteln unterschiedliche Gewaltformen (etwa interpersonelle, strukturelle oder epistemische Gewalt) und machen Konflikte durch Themen und Motive greifbar, in denen Hör-Wissen reflektiert und erweitert wird. Die close readings der Fallstudien konzentrieren sich auf narrative, rhetorische und andere literarische Merkmale bei der Inszenierung von Klang und werden von semiotischen Analysen ergänzt, die die Verbindung zwischen Klängen und Gewalt verdeutlichen. Die semiotischen Begriffe werden angewandt, um zu bestimmen, wie sich ein literarischer Klang (als Zeichen) auf Gewalt als dessen Objekt bezieht.Das Korpus besteht aus vier AutorInnen aus verschiedenen sprachlichen und kulturellen Kontexten: Chingiz Aitmatov, J. M. Coetzee, Frankétienne und Jean Rhys. Ihre anglophonen, frankophonen und russophonen Texte sind Gegenstand der Fallstudien zu postkolonialer Literatur. Die Romane problematisieren die Verschränkung zwischen Klangkultur, imperialer Ordnung und kolonialem Erbe, indem sie auf Klangumgebungen, Hörpraktiken und Modi der Klangerzeugung fokussieren. Ein Vergleich zwischen den Texten stellt die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede hinsichtlich ihrer Klangimaginationen und Inszenierungen von Klängen heraus.Die Dissertation stellt einen Beitrag zu den Literary Sound Studies dar, wobei das Forschungsinteresse an der Schnittstelle zwischen Komparatistik, Sound Studies und Postcolonial Studies liegt. eng: The sensory domain of sound is imbued with political meaning in postcolonial prose fiction. The literary imagination of sound articulates different configurations of power, accentuating sonic manifestations of oppression and domination, but also of resistance and subversion within texts that have a postcolonial background. The thesis examines the political significance of literary sounds (conceptualized as intermodal references) on the basis of the concept of violence: Literary sounds convey varying forms of violence (such as interpersonal, structural and epistemic violence) and make conflicts more palpable by illustrating them through themes and motifs that reflect and also creatively expand sonic knowledge. In the case studies, close-readings focus on narrative, rhetorical and other literary features in the staging of sound, complemented by semiotic analyses of the connection between sound and violence. The semiotic terminology is applied to determine how, as signs, literary sounds relate to violence as their object.The corpus consists of novels by four authors from different linguistic and cultural contexts: Chingiz Aitmatov, J. M. Coetzee, Frankétienne and Jean Rhys. Their Anglophone, Francophone and Russophone texts are the objects of the case studies on postcolonial literature. The chosen novels problematize the entanglement of sound culture with imperial orders and colonial legacies: By exploring auditory environments, listening practices and modes of sound production, they demonstrate a particular aural sensitivity that adds a violent dimension to literary sounds. A comparison of the analyzed texts establishes the similarities and differences in regard to their sonic imaginations and how they stage sounds.Contributing to the research of literary sound studies, the main interest of this thesis lies at the intersection of comparative literary studies, sound studies and postcolonial studies.

    Combining a cultural history of sound with media and literary studies, 'Acoustic Entanglements' presents a new perspective on the entangled affiliations of transnational mobility, diasporic cultural memory, embodied performance, and the material practices of aesthetic acts. Starting by reassessing Emily Dickinson's poetry as participating in an emergent phonographic logic, this book proposes that sound in modernity assumes the capacity to cross time and space, 'entangling' past and present, living and dead, periphery and alleged center. From this vantage point, the study examines Lillian Allen's dub poetry as an ethical demand for economic justice made via sound, Janet Cardiff's audio walks as renegotiating the cultural place of Europe for a North American imaginary, and Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore's performances as voicing indigenous resilience in the present. Eco-Sonic Media brings an ecological critique to the history of sound media technologies in order to amplify the environmental undertones in sound studies and turn up the audio in discussions of greening the media. By looking at early and neglected forms of sound technology, Jacob Smith seeks to create a revisionist, ecologically aware history of sound media.     "Examining a series of modernist thinkers and composers who engaged with non-European cultures as they pursued pure sound as a privileged presence, White Musical Mythologies pairs Erik Satie with Bergson, Edgard Varèse with Bataille, Pierre Boulez with Artaud, and John Cage with Derrida to offer an ambitious intellectual history of the colonial roots of modernist musical thought. Each of the musicians studied in this book re-created or appropriated non-European forms of expression as they conceived music ontologically, often thinking music as something immediate and immersive: from Satie's dabblings with mysticism and exoticism in bohemian Montmartre of the 1890s to Varèse's experience of ethnographic exhibitions and surrealist poetry in 1930s Paris, and from Boulez's endeavor to theorize a kind of musical writing that would "absorb" the sounds of non-European musical traditions to Cage, who took inspiration from Eastern thought as he wrote about sound, silence, and chance. Edmund Mendelssohn suggests that the Euro-American idea of "pure sound," and the twentieth-century quest to produce it, was premised on an assumed authority of "the West" over Europe's others. Intended for readers in philosophy, musicology, art theory, the history of modernism, sound studies, and postcolonial studies, this book demonstrates that we cannot fully understand French theory in its novelty and complexity without music and sound"--

    Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory breaks new ground by redirecting the arguments of foundational texts within film theory to film sound tracks. Walker includes sustained analyses of particular films according to a range of theoretical approaches: psychoanalysis, feminism, genre studies, post-colonialism, and queer theory. The films come from disparate temporal and industrial contexts: from Classical Hollywood Gothic melodrama (Rebecca) to contemporary, critically-acclaimed science fiction (Gravity). Along with sound tracks from canonical American films including The Searchers and To Have and Have Not, Walker analyzes independent Australasian films: examples include Heavenly Creatures, a New Zealand film that uses music to empower its queer female protagonists; and Ten Canoes, the first Australian feature film with a script entirely in Aboriginal languages. Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory thus not only calls new attention to the significance of sound tracks, but also focuses on the sonic power of characters representing those whose voices have all too often been drowned out. Understanding Sound Tracks Through Film Theory is both rigorous and accessible to all students and scholars with a grasp of cinematic and musical structures. Accordingly, the volume maps out a new territory for research at the intersection of music, philosophy, and sound studies. The essays in Sound and Affect look at objects and experiences in which correlations of sound and affect reside, in music and beyond: the voice as it speaks, stutters, cries, or sings; music, whether vocal, instrumental, or electronic; our sonic environments, whether natural or man-made, and our responses to them. As argued here, far from being stable, correlations of sound and affect are influenced by factors as diverse as race, class, gender, and social and political experience. Examining these factors is key to the project, which gathers contributions from a cross-disciplinary roster of scholars including both established as well as a wealth of new voices. "The sonic qualities that emerge from aesthetic and technological decisions in the recording studio have a major impact on how music sounds, yet our ability to describe this impact on the listening experience is limited. Listeners often use very elaborate metaphors when describing sound quality, such as timbral and spatial characteristics. There is, however, a prevalent belief that metaphors are vague and highly subjective, and therefore unsuitable for academic and more exacting discussions of sound. Making Sense of Recordings challenges this assumption by showing how these metaphors are closely connected to our sonic experience and that they make sense within a larger historical context of technological developments and changing discourses of recorded sound. Part 1 of the book starts by tracing written discourses of recorded sound, discussing how everyday listeners and audio professionals describe their experiences of sound in recorded music. The concept of the listener, as it is theorized here, relates both to the production and reception side of recorded music and assumes some sort of conscious evaluative process where people give meaning to their experiences. Listening is approached from a quality-oriented mode of listening concerned with embodied cognition and is conditioned by the specific listening situation and the specific purpose of listening. Building on cognitive sciences, ideas of embodied cognition, and recent studies in discourse analysis, the book then provides new theoretical and methodological approaches to sound perception and conceptualization with particular relevance to recorded music. The aim is not only to expand on existing histories of studio music technologies, from production to reproduction to reception, but also to provide analytical and practical tools to aid in the understanding and communication of sound discourse in the studio and beyond"--

Kaleidophonic Modernity reexamines the development of mechanical sound recording technology by charting the orbits of writers, scientists, and artists in France and the United States. Working between comparative literature, the history of science, and urban studies, Brehm builds a bridge between visual culture and sound studies. Kaleidophonic Modernity places the poet and inventor Charles Cros and his lover, the celebrated concert pianist and salonnière Nina de Villard at the heart of modern aesthetic and scientific vanguards. Cros's scientific endeavors ranged from color photography, to telecommunications, to mechanical sound reproducibility. In his poetry the Surrealists found an ancestor and inspiration. His literary and scientific works prove startling and relevant to predicaments of technological media in his own time and ours.
