    "In Uses and Abuses of Moses, Theodore Ziolkowski surveys the major literary treatments of the biblical figure of Moses since the Enlightenment. Beginning with the influential treatments by Schiller and Goethe, for whom Moses was, respectively, a member of a mystery cult and a violent murderer, Ziolkowski examines an impressive array of dramas, poems, operas, novels, and films to show the many ways in which the charismatic figure of Moses has been exploited...the "uses and abuses" of the title...to serve a variety of ideological and cultural purposes. Ziolkowski's wide-ranging and in-depth study compares and analyzes the attempts by nearly one hundred writers to fill in the gaps in the biblical account of Moses' life and to explain his motivation as a leader, lawgiver, and prophet.

    Die großen Dichter der Römer haben in der abendländischen - und nicht zuletzt in der deutschen - Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts ein äußerst produktives Nachleben genossen. In seinem 'Tod des Vergil' (1945) befasst sich Hermann Broch einfühlsam mit Leben und Werk des Dichters der Äneis. In Christoph Ransmayrs 'Die letzte Welt' (1988) tritt Ovid als Person nie in Erscheinung, aber die Forschungen des Romanhelden enthüllen das problematische Verhältnis von Fiktion und Wirklichkeit im Leben Ovids während seines Exils im fernen Tomis und in den Erzählungen seiner Metamorphosen. Günter Grass' Roman örtlich betäubt (1969) bietet unter anderem eine einsichtsvolle Analyse der Bedeutung Senecas als Seismograph für jeweils drei Generationen von Deutschen der Bundesrepublik. Und Lukrez?

    Titus Lucretius Carus (circa 94-54 v.Chr.), der in der Geschichte der lateinischen Literatur als epischer Dichter neben, ja manchmal sogar über Vergil gestellt wird und vor allem als wichtigster Befürworter des Epikureismus im Rom des ersten Jahrhunderts v.Chr. galt, spielt in der Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts kaum noch eine Rolle. Wenn auch die atomistischen und vermeintlich antireligiösen Lehren seines 'De Rerum Natura' während des christlichen Mittelalters abgelehnt wurden, schätzten ihn sogar seine Gegner als einen großen Sprachkünstler. Nach seiner Wiederentdeckung in der Renaissance wurde er zunehmend als Philosoph und Naturwissenschaftler geschätzt. Aber nachdem sein Einfluss im 19. Jahrhundert bei vielen Dichtern noch hochstand, wurde sein Name danach immer seltener erwähnt. Seit der wichtigen Vortragsreihe George Santayanas über Lucretius, Dante und Goethe - Three Philosophical Poets (1910) - haben sich zwar immer wieder akademische Philosophen mit seinem Denken befasst; aber die einzige ausführliche Studie über Lukrez und die Moderne kann nur wenige literarische Beispiele heranziehen: neben den Italienern Italo Calvino und Primo Levi und dem Österreicher Raoul Schrott, die im Vorübergehen erwähnt werden, werden nur einige anglo-amerikanische Dichter zitiert, die sich aber nie ausführlich mit Lukrez oder seinem Werk beschäftigen. In einer wichtigen deutschen Forschung zur Antikerezeption wird nach Goethe nur noch Heinrich Mann erwähnt, in dessen Roman 'Die Vollendung des Königs Henri Quatre' (1938) Zitate aus mehreren lateinischen Dichtern, einschließlich Lukrez, vorkommen.

The figure of Moses becomes an animate seismograph, in Ziolkowski's words, through whose literary reception we can trace many of the shifts in the cultural landscape of the past two centuries. Because of Romanticism's vast scope, most treatments have restricted themselves to single countries or to specific forms, notably literature, art, or music. This book takes a wider view by considering in each of six chapters representative examples of works-from across Europe and across a range of the arts-that were created in a single year. For instance, in the first chapter, focusing on the year 1798, Beethoven's Pathétique sonata, Wordsworth and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads, Tieck's novel Franz Sternbald's Wanderungen, and Goya's painting El sueño de la razón. The following chapters treat works from the years 1808, 1818, 1828, 1838, and 1848. This approach by "stages" makes it possible to determine characteristics of five stages of Romanticism in its historical and intellectual context and to note the conspicuous differences between these stages as European Romanticism developed-for example, the waxing and waning of religious themes, the shifting visions of landscape, the gradual ironic detachment from early Romanticism.     Dem Beobachter der literarischen Szene in Deutschland fällt früher oder später auf, dass Alexander von Humboldt - von einem Vorgriff um 1980 abgesehen - im ersten Dezennium des 21. Jahrhunderts zu einer Hauptgestalt literarischer Fiktion geworden ist. Wie ist die Ikonisierung des Forschungsreisenden und Universalgelehrten im deutschen Roman zu erklären? Was fasziniert, was provoziert die Autoren an diesem Mann, an diesem Leben? Welche Motive, welche subjektiven Haltungen, welche substantiellen Gehalte lassen sich bei der Lektüre dieser Romane erschließen? Welche stilistischen Differenzierungen haben Humboldts Diktion in seinem eigenen Bericht über seine berühmte Forschungsreise und seine distanzierte Haltung gegenüber dem human factor bei Autoren der Gegenwart herausgefordert? Kaum einem Autor geht es lediglich um eine fiktionalisierte Biographie oder um eine populärwissenschaftliche Aufbereitung von Humboldts Forschungen mit literarischen Mitteln. In einer Zeit, in der auch die Wissenschaftsgeschichte ihre Narrative kreiert, wird bei den Schriftstellern der Lebensstoff des Gelehrten und Reisenden zum Material poetischer Transformation. Es sind die Autoren, die Schwerpunkte setzen, Konfigurationen erfinden, Obsessionen und Idiosynkrasien artikulieren.     Die großen Dichter der Römer haben in der abendländischen - und nicht zuletzt in der deutschen - Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts ein äußerst produktives Nachleben genossen. In seinem 'Tod des Vergil' (1945) befasst sich Hermann Broch einfühlsam mit Leben und Werk des Dichters der Äneis. In Christoph Ransmayrs 'Die letzte Welt' (1988) tritt Ovid als Person nie in Erscheinung, aber die Forschungen des Romanhelden enthüllen das problematische Verhältnis von Fiktion und Wirklichkeit im Leben Ovids während seines Exils im fernen Tomis und in den Erzählungen seiner Metamorphosen. Günter Grass' Roman örtlich betäubt (1969) bietet unter anderem eine einsichtsvolle Analyse der Bedeutung Senecas als Seismograph für jeweils drei Generationen von Deutschen der Bundesrepublik. Und Lukrez? Titus Lucretius Carus (circa 94-54 v.Chr.), der in der Geschichte der lateinischen Literatur als epischer Dichter neben, ja manchmal sogar über Vergil gestellt wird und vor allem als wichtigster Befürworter des Epikureismus im Rom des ersten Jahrhunderts v.Chr. galt, spielt in der Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts kaum noch eine Rolle. Wenn auch die atomistischen und vermeintlich antireligiösen Lehren seines 'De Rerum Natura' während des christlichen Mittelalters abgelehnt wurden, schätzten ihn sogar seine Gegner als einen großen Sprachkünstler. Nach seiner Wiederentdeckung in der Renaissance wurde er zunehmend als Philosoph und Naturwissenschaftler geschätzt. Aber nachdem sein Einfluss im 19. Jahrhundert bei vielen Dichtern noch hochstand, wurde sein Name danach immer seltener erwähnt. Seit der wichtigen Vortragsreihe George Santayanas über Lucretius, Dante und Goethe - Three Philosophical Poets (1910) - haben sich zwar immer wieder akademische Philosophen mit seinem Denken befasst; aber die einzige ausführliche Studie über Lukrez und die Moderne kann nur wenige literarische Beispiele heranziehen: neben den Italienern Italo Calvino und Primo Levi und dem Österreicher Raoul Schrott, die im Vorübergehen erwähnt werden, werden nur einige ...
