Volume 1. Stèles -- volume 2. Chinese sources and contexts. "Victor Segalen has come to be widely recognized in recent years as one of the luminaries of French modernism. Trained as a surgeon and Chinese interpreter, he wrote prolifically in a variety of genres. With this highly original collection of prose poems in French and Chinese, Segalen invented a new genre-the "stèle-poem"-in imitation of the tall stone tablets with formal inscriptions that he saw in China. His wry persona declaims these inscriptions like an emperor struggling to command his personal empire, drawing from a vast range of Chinese texts to explore themes of friendship, love, desire, gender roles, violence, exoticism, otherness, and selfhood. The result is a linguistically and culturally hybrid modernist poetics that is often ironic and at times haunting. Segalen's bilingual masterwork is presented here fully translated, in the most extensively annotated critical edition ever produced. It includes unpublished manuscript material, newly identified sources, commentaries on the Chinese, and a facsimile of the original edition as printed in Beijing in 1914. Volume 2 of this work is available only online at www.wesleyan.edu/wespress/segalen2 and www.steles.org/Volume2.html"--Page 4 de la couverture

The Dong Nationality is one of the 56 officially recognized nationalities in the P.R. of China. Kam is the autonym of this people. There is a population of 2.5 million Kam (1990 census), mainly in Guizhou, Guangxi and Hunan provinces. The Dong language consists of two dialects: Northern Dong (with a few hundred thousand elderly native speakers) and Southern Dong (spoken by ca. 1.4 million people). This New Testament edition embodies a parallel translation of the Holy Scriptures in the Southern dialect of Dong and in Mandarin Chinese. The Dong text, based on the Greek New Testament, was translated by a team over a period of nine years. The Chinese text is a revision of the 85-year old Chinese Union Version (Hèhébĕn Version). An extensive appendix of more than 300 pages encompasses a Dong-Chinese wordlist of items actually occurring in the New Testament, a Dong word index, a Chinese word index, an introduction to the Dong script (appropriate for literacy applications), six Middle East maps and a list of dialect correspondences.
