Hoffmann) aufgewiesen. This study edition is an unaltered reprint of the 2nd edition of the work published in 1977. Its subject is of equal interest for research on (German) Romanticism and for problems of art theory in the modern age. Romantic irony is discussed first in terms of the theories behind it (F. Schlegel, Solger, etc.) and then in terms of structural features of literary works displaying its effects (Novalis, Tieck, E.T.A. Hoffmann). Both here and in the outward appearance of the works themselves, it is possible to discern a specific kind of reflection as the outward and visible token of the intellectually productive side of Romantic art. It is this that gives romantic irony its status as a principle of general significance over and above the period in which it made its appearance.

This paper describes an estimator of the additive components of a nonparametric additive model with a known link function. When the additive components are twice continuously differentiable, the estimator is asymptotically normally distributed with a rate of convergence in probability of n -2/5 . This is true regardless of the (finite) dimension of the explanatory variable. Thus, in contrast to the existing asymptotically normal estimator, the new estimator has no curse of dimensionality. Moreover, the asymptotic distribution of each additive component is the same as it would be if the other components were known with certainty. -- nonparametric regression ; additive models ; multivariate curve estimation ; kernel estimates ; orthogonal series estimator

This paper deals with the description and application of regression models for count data where the dependent variable takes only nonnegative integer values. The specification of the Poisson- and the NegBin 2-Model with their estimation procedures and goodness-of-fit-statistics are presented for cross-section data. To co me to a decision between the two models tests for overdispersed data are used. The strong positive relationship between patent applications and the R&D personnel respectively R&D expenditures which is presented in the literature could be confirmed with this application. Because of overdispersion in the data the NegBin2-Model can be preferred to the Poisson-Model.

Volume 2 is the first comprehensive portrayal of the development of the Chinese novel towards the end of the Empire, i.e. from the 16th century to 1911. Novels such as "Der Traum der roten Kammer" ("The Dream of the Red Chamber") and "Jin Ping Mei", to name but two of the very few specimens known in the west, belong to a tradition that has its roots in the 16th century. Thomas Zimmer analyses the emergence of the novel in its various forms, the historical network of textual references as well as the realization of literary topics developed throughout the centuries. This nine-volume edition will represent the definitive collection of extant Rossetti correspondence, an outstanding primary witness to the range of ideas and opinions that shaped Rossetti's art and poetry. The largest collection of Rossetti's letters ever to be published, it features all known surviving letters, a total of almost 5,800 to over 330 recipients, and includes 2,000 previously unpublished letters by Rossetti and selected letters to him

This paper is a thoroughly revised and extended version of an article firstly published in the anthology "Moderne Wirtschaftsgeschichte" (München: Oldenbourg) in 1996. This book is an introduction to modern economic history for historians and economists. Accordingly this paper has to two objectives: Firstly, it presents economic theory explaining business cycles to historians. Secondly, for economists it illustrates both the possibilities and problems to detect and understand business cycles in the past. The paper is organised as follows: Section 1 sets the scene. It describes the approach of business cycles and provides a number of essential definitions. The next section shortly illustrates business cycles in the past 200 years in Germany (2). Section 3 deals with business cycle theory. To start with, it highlights the long tradition of theories that have sought to explain business cycles (3.1). Secondly it explains the "standard paradigm" (3.2). Thirdly it reviews the latest developments in business cycle theory (3.3). Section 4 discusses the application of business cycle theory in historical research. The last section deals with open questions and unsolved problems from a historian's point of view.

Computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling has provided a number of important insights about the interplay between environmental tax policy and the pre-existing tax system. In this paper, we emphasize that a labor market policy of recycling tax revenues from an environmental tax to lower employers? non-wage labor cost depends on how the costs of labor are modeled. We propose an approach which combines neoclassical substitutability and fixed factor proportions. Our concept implies a user cost of labor which consists of the market price of labor plus the costs of inputs associated with the employment of a worker. We present simulation results based on a CO2 tax and the recycling of its revenues to reduce the nonwage labor cost. One simulation is based on the market price of labor and the other on the user cost of labor. We found a double dividend under the first approach but not under the second one.

The government of common agricultural and forestry land is a topic that is currently enjoying a revival of interest. Many local communities have shown the ability to pursue sustainable use of natural resources thanks to their self-governed authorities. In this context the relationship between public and private interest which is established in use of the resource is a fairly controversial. The paper proposes a dynamic model to analyse the behaviour of a user of a common property resource in a "real option" framework, where the value of the right to use the resource is affected by: 1) uncertainty on the future amount of the resource; 2) entry and exit costs and 3) the number of users competitors.

I apply Ricardo’s principle of comparative advantage to a theory of factor substitutability in a model with a continuum of worker and job types. Highly skilled workers have a comparative advantage in complex jobs. The model satisfies the distance-dependent elasticity of substitution (DIDES) characteristic: substitutability between types declines with their skill distance. I analyze changes in relative wages due to human capital accumulation. The concept of a complexity dispersion parameter or compression elasticity is introduced. Empirical studies suggest its value to be equal to two: a 1 percent increase in the stock of human capital reduces the Mincerian return by 2 percent.

Often seen as a mirroring the contemporary movement of American history itself, Scott Fitzgerald's literary life was a roller-coaster ride from early success in the 1920s to apparent oblivion by the end of the 1930s. This study attempts to account for such a problematic career by focusing on Fitzgerald's struggle to sustain a perilous balancing act between his commitment to a totally involving life on the one hand, and his parallel commitment to the serious business of art on the other. This paper presents empirical evidence on the distributional impact of public higher edu- cation through analysis of a cross-sectional view of West Germany in 1997. In contrast to a widely-held hypothesis in economics, our findings do not show evidence for a regressive im- pact. The use of a net-transfer calculation clearly provides a progressive distributional effect of the benefits from subsidization - at least when viewed in the cross-sectional perspective. The decisive factors are (1) the general social stratification within and among the adjusted income deciles and (2) the incidence of the granted benefits. Complementary to the existing widespread literature in this field, we propose the BCa-bootstrap procedure in order to perform statistical inference.
