Open Access Publication Fund

Funds for monographs/collective volumes

As of 19.08.2024: The funds for the Open Access Publication Fund for the year 2024 have been exhausted. New funding applications can be submitted starting in 2025.

The Open Access Publication Fund of the FID AVL supports the Open Access publication of books (monographs and edited volumes) in General and Comparative Literature. Up to 5 books can be funded per year. Funding is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Here you can find the current status of the publication fund.

How can you use the Open Access Publication Fund?

Step 1

Please check whether your publication meets the funding requirements.

Costs for Open Access monographs and edited volumes (or conference proceedings) can be covered up to a certain amount, provided the following funding conditions are met:

General requirements

  • Publications can be funded up to a maximum amount of €5,000 (including VAT). If earmarked third-party funding is available for the publication, it must be used.
  • Eligible for funding are publications by scholars of Comparative Literature in Germany who have the appropriate qualification or work at an academic institution listed with the Arbeitsstelle Kleine Fächer or the DGAVL.
  • To ensure the publication fund has the broadest possible impact, a maximum of 1 funding per person and 3 fundings per academic location can be granted in the period from 2024 to 2025. An overview of the status of the location contingents can be found here.
  • A publisher's offer with a transparent cost breakdown must be submitted for the publication.

Requirements for the publication

  • The publications must align with the academic profile of the Fachinformationsdienst Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft (FID AVL).
  • Funded books will receive a DOI at least at the level of the entire work (for edited volumes, ideally also at the level of individual contributions).
  • The publisher registers its OA books with OAPEN and/or DOAB.
  • The book is published under a Creative Commons license, with a preference for CC-BY or CC-BY-SA licenses. Publications under a Creative Commons license with the NC (non-commercial use) component cannot be supported by the fund. Additionally, the authors or editors grant the publisher only simple, non-exclusive rights to use the work.
  • Funding Acknowledgements: The metadata and a suitable place in the book (e.g., in the imprint) will include a mention of the funding from the publication fund. This may read, for example, as follows:

“The Open Access publication of this book was supported by the Open Access Publication Fund of the Fachinformationsdienst Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft (FID AVL) at the University Library J.C. Senckenberg.

    or

“We/The authors thank the Open Access Publication Fund of the Fachinformationsdienst Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft (FID AVL) at the University Library J.C. Senckenberg for the financial support of the Open Access publication of this book.

Step 2

Please compile all the documents listed below for your application.

If your academic affiliation and publication meet the above funding requirements, please fill out the following application form:

We require an abstract of the planned publication to assess whether it aligns with the academic profile of the FID AVL. The abstract should not exceed 1,800 characters (including spaces).

Obtain a publisher's offer for your publication with as transparent a cost breakdown as possible and attach it to your application as an appendix.

Step 3

Send us your complete documents (filled-out application form, abstract of the publication, and publisher's offer) to: openaccess(at)avldigital.de

What happens after submission?

First, we will confirm the receipt of the submitted documents. After that, they will be reviewed in a two-step process:

The Open Access team of the Fachinformationsdienst Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft (FID AVL) will review, based on the completed application form and the attached publisher's offer, whether the funding requirements are formally met (e.g., whether you have already used the Open Access Publication Fund or if the contingent for your academic location has already been exhausted).

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft (DGAVL) will review, based on the abstract you submitted, whether your publication project aligns with the academic profile of the FID AVL. The abstract and title of your project will be transmitted to the DGAVL in an anonymized form.

After the review, we will contact you with either an approval or a rejection. In the case of approval, the corresponding fund resources will be reserved for your publication project.
