Mikrotopoi. Zur Poetik kleiner Räume, KWI Essen (15.3.2023)

Die kulturwissenschaftliche Forschung seit dem Spatial Turn hat die Wechselbeziehung zwischen Kultur und Raum in den unterschiedlichsten Konstellationen untersucht. Dabei standen häufig makroskopische Räume im Mittelpunkt des Interesses – das Konzept einer globalen Welt, die Unterscheidung zwischen ‚West‘ und ‚Ost‘ oder zwischen dem globalen Norden und Süden, die Kartierung großer Räume, die sozialen Auswirkungen globaler Transport- und Kommunikationsmittel usw.

Der Workshop soll diese makroskopische Perspektive um einen dezidiert mikroskopischen Blickwinkel ergänzen. Im Mittelpunkt steht eine bestimmte Art von Räumen, die sich als Mikrotopoi bezeichnen lassen. Damit sind kleine Räume gemeint, die nur zu bestimmten Zeiten betreten und verlassen werden können. Als ‚klein‘ soll nach der Arbeitsdefinition ein Raum gelten, der ein Interaktionssystem etabliert. In Mikrotopoi zwingt also die bloße Ko-Präsenz von Körpern zur Kommunikation, und daher gilt dort immer Paul Watzlawicks Diktum, dass man nicht nicht kommunizieren kann.

Beispiele für Mikrotopoi sind Aufzüge, Zugabteile, Pferdekutschen, Luftschutzbunker, Pavillons und Höhlen bei plötzlich aufziehenden Unwettern oder gemeinsam genutzte Apartments während eines Lockdowns. Ihnen gemeinsam ist, dass aufgrund der temporären Einschließung Kommunikation schnell eskalieren kann. Kommunikation in Mikrotopoi wird daher oft zu Risikokommunikation.

Moderne Gesellschaften haben spezifische Kulturtechniken entwickelt, um dieses Risiko zu verringern. Dazu zählen insbesondere Strategien, die eigene Anwesenheit zu minimieren, z.B. indem man sich in ein Buch oder ein Smartphone vertieft, aus dem Fenster schaut oder auf Bildschirme starrt. Erving Goffman hat in diesem Zusammenhang den Begriff civil inattention geprägt, um Praktiken zu beschreiben, bei denen man so tut, als würde man nicht kommunizieren. Während aber civil inattention bei kurzen Begegnungen wie dem Vorbeigehen an einem Fremden auf dem Bürgersteig recht einfach bewerkstelligt werden kann, ist sie in Mikrotopoi nur schwer taktvoll zu handhaben und erfordert sehr ausgefeilte Technologien des Selbst.

Der Workshop geht von der Annahme aus, dass die kommunikativen Praktiken in Mikrotopoi vor allem in Literatur und Film der Moderne erprobt wurden und dass sich dort eine Poetik von Mikrotopoi beobachten lässt, die reale Konsequenzen hat. Besonders willkommen sind daher Beiträge aus den Literatur- und Medienwissenschaften, die entlang von Fallstudien ausloten, wie narrative Medien den Diskurs über das Verhalten in Mikrotopoi gestalten. Ebenso erwünscht sind kulturwissenschaftliche Überlegungen zu nicht-literarischem Quellenmaterial – beispielsweise mit Blick auf die technische Entwicklung von Mikrotopoi. Dabei können folgende Fragen zur Anregung dienen:

• Welche kommunikativen Strategien und welche Techniken der civil inattention (Goffman) werden in Mikrotopoi angewandt?
• Wie werden Gefühlsökonomien in Mikrotopoi ausgehandelt?
• Welche Eskalationen von Kommunikation werden dargestellt?
• Welche Akteursnetzwerke handeln in Mikrotopoi (zu denken wäre etwa an Kutscher, Chauffeure, Liftboys etc.)?
• Welche literarischen oder filmischen Mikrotopoi fungieren im mikrokosmischen Sinn als Spiegel der Welt als Ganzer?
• Gibt es bestimmte Mikrotopoi, die kulturelle Krisenerfahrungen symbolisch verdichten (in der jüngeren Geschichte möglicherweise das Zugabteil im Kontext der ‚Flüchtlingskrise‘, das gemeinsame Apartment zur Zeit der Coronakrise, der Bunker im Ukrainekrieg etc.)?
• Wie beeinflussen Mikrotopoi die Poetik der Texte, in denen sie dargestellt werden?
• Wie unterscheidet sich die Darstellung von Mikrotopoi in unterschiedlichen Medien?
• Welche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede bestehen zwischen den verschiedenen Mikrotopoi?
• Lässt sich eine historische Entwicklung in der Poetik von Mikrotopoi beobachten?

Der Workshop findet am 20./21. Juli 2023 am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut Essen statt. Beitragsvorschläge für einen 30-minütigen Vortrag werden bis zum 15. März 2023 mit einem maximal einseitigen Exposé erbeten an den Organisator Dr. Christian Kirchmeier (c.kirchmeier@rug.nl). Tagungssprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch. Eine Übernahme der Reisekosten ist geplant.

CfP: Microtopoi. Poetics of Small Spaces, KWI Essen (March 15, 2023)

Research in cultural studies since the spatial turn has examined the interrelationship between culture and space in a wide variety of constellations. In doing so, macroscopic spaces have often been the focus of interest – the concept of a global world, the distinction between ‘West’ and ‘East’ or between the global North and South, the mapping of large spaces, the social impact of global means of transportation and communication, etc.

The workshop aims to complement this macroscopic perspective with a decidedly microscopic one. The focus will be on a particular type of spaces referred to as microtopoi. Microtopoi are small spaces that can only be entered and exited at certain times. According to the working definition, a space will be considered ‘small’ if it establishes an interaction system. In microtopoi, then, the mere co-presence of bodies forces communication, and thus Paul Watzlawick's dictum that one cannot not communicate always applies there.

Examples of microtopoi are elevators, train compartments, horse carriages, bomb shelters, pavilions and caves during sudden storms, or shared apartments during a lockdown. They all have in common that communication can escalate quickly because of the temporary confinement. Communication in microtopoi therefore often becomes risk communication.

Modern societies have developed specific cultural techniques to reduce this risk. Most importantly, people in microtopoi attempt to undo their presence, e.g. by immersing oneself in a book or smartphone, looking out the window, or staring at screens. Erving Goffman coined the term civil inattention to describe such practices in which we act as if we were not communicating. But while civil inattention can be performed quite effortlessly in brief encounters such as passing a stranger on the sidewalk, it is difficult to manage tactfully in microtopoi and requires very sophisticated technologies of the self.

The workshop is based on the assumption that communicative practices in microtopoi have been tested primarily in modern literature and film, where we can observe a poetics of microtopoi that has real-world consequences. Case studies that examine how literature and other media shape the discourse of behavior in microtopoi are very welcome. Similarly, contributions from cultural studies that analyze non-literary sources, e.g. with regard to the technical development of microtopoi, are also highly appreciated. Potential topics for papers include, but are not limited to, the following questions:

• What communicative strategies and what techniques of civil inattention (Goffman) are employed in microtopoi?
• How are emotional economies negotiated in microtopoi?
• What escalations of communication are represented?
• Which actor networks act in microtopoi (one might think of coachmen, chauffeurs, liftboys, etc.)?
• Which literary or cinematic microtopoi function in a microcosmic sense as mirrors of the world at large?
• Are there particular microtopoi that symbolically condense cultural experiences of crises (in recent history, possibly the train compartment in the context of the ‘refugee crisis,’ the shared apartment during the Corona crisis, the bunker during the war in Ukraine, etc.)?
• How do microtopoi influence the poetics of the texts in which they are represented?
• How does the representation of microtopoi vary in different media?
• What are the similarities and differences between the various microtopoi?
• Can we observe a historical development in the poetics of microtopoi?

The workshop will take place on July 20/21, 2023, at the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen. Please submit proposals for a 30-minute paper by March 15, 2023, with a maximum one-page synopsis to the organizer, Dr. Christian Kirchmeier (c.kirchmeier@rug.nl). Conference languages will be German and English. It is planned to cover travel expenses.
