PhD fellowship in Literature and generative AI, University of Bergen

Position starting date:

01.11.2025

Application deadline:

15.08.2025

The Center for Digital Narrative at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies in Bergen (Norway) invites applications for a PhD position on Literature and Generative AI commencing November 2025 or as agreed upon. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years.

We’re looking for a person who has an MA in literary studies (or digital culture with a literary focus in their MA thesis) and who is interested in using literary methodologies such as literary analysis, literary theory or prompt engineering to study AI-generated stories.

The project is part of the research project AI STORIES: Narrative Archetypes for Artificial Intelligence and should result in a PhD in either Digital Culture, Comparative Literature or Nordic Literature. The AI STORIES project is a European Research Council Advanced Grant led by Professor Jill Walker Rettberg, with a team of three postdocs, another doctoral fellow, a research adviser, a data management expert and a research assistant. AI STORIES explores the hypothesis that deep narrative structures in the datasets used to train generative AI models are replicated and perhaps exaggerated in the output of generative AI, and that this could lead to culturally specific narrative biases.

Applicants are required to submit a detailed project proposal for a doctoral dissertation that aligns with the overall research goals for AI STORIES. Please see the project website for more information about the project.
