The Portuguese Representations of India: Power and Knowledge in a Peripheral Orientalism (19th and 20th Centuries)

The main goal of this project (besides critically bringing to light the literary and scientific production on India from the 19th and 20th centuries) is to determine the extent to which the Portuguese accumulation of knowledge on the Orient can be linked to strategies of power in the context of Portugal-Asia relations. The immediate results of this project include:

  1. the mapping of literary and scientific production beginning around 1825 – year in which Camões by Almeida Garret was published – and ends in 1961 with the annexation of Goa to the Indian Nation;
  2. the publication of a scientific edition on Tomás Ribeiro’s Jornadas, a travel narrative, which was published in two volumes in the 19th century: Do Tejo ao Mandovy (1873) and Entre palmeiras – de Pangim a Salsete e Ponda (1874);
  3. the publication of an anthology of the most relevant works from the Portuguese orientalist Guilherme de Vasconcelos Abreu (1847-1907;
  4. the publication of a monograph on “orientalism from within” in Goa.
