Assistant or Advanced Assistant Professor(s) of French, Georgia Institute of Technology
The School of Modern Languages at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta invites applications for up to two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of French to begin on August 1, 2020.
We are seeking specializations in both Applied Linguistics and Culture and Media Studies. These positions are full-time with an expected teaching load of two courses per semester (four per academic year).
The successful candidates will have (1) a PhD in French or a related field earned by the appointment start date of August 1, 2020; (2) native-level competence in French; (3) an active research and publication agenda; and (4) documented evidence of successful instruction and teaching of French, from introductory to advanced levels.
For the position specializing in applied linguistics, an ideal candidate will bring expertise in applied francophone sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, foreign language pedagogy with interests in linguistic ethnography on (im)migration, heritage languages, multilingualism, and/or global French language studies. Interest or expertise in one or more of the following areas is recommended: language variations, languages in contact, bilingualism; gender, identity, and cultural norms; intercultural and multilingual communication and language awareness; and languages for the professions (science & technology, business, health, environmental sciences, etc).
For the position specializing in culture and media studies, an ideal candidate will bring expertise in modern and contemporary French and Francophone studies with global, comparative, and inter- and cross-cultural approaches. Interest or expertise in one or more of the following areas is recommended: sustainability and environmental humanities; science fiction and the study of science and technology; cinema, visual, and literary studies; women and gender studies; migration and international development studies; and digital humanities and new media.
We seek candidates who bring an ambitious and entrepreneurial scholarly agenda and who have demonstrated experience with innovative curriculum development that charts new directions in French studies. Interest in or experience with teaching business- or technology-oriented French and leadership in an immersive faculty-led study-abroad program oriented toward business, technology, culture, and sustainability is highly recommended. We seek colleagues with a commitment to collegiality, the enhancement and expansion of the program as a whole and in graduate studies in particular, and extracurricular activities that serve our diverse student body. Experience or interest in teaching and developing online courses is recommended, but not required. The School of Modern Languages (www.modlangs.gatech.edu) emphasizes interactive learning and interdisciplinary study of languages and cultures. We offer an innovative B.S. degree in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies (ALIS) as well as joint bachelor degrees in Global Economics and Modern Language (GEML) and International Affairs and Modern Languages (IAML). We also offer graduate programs: an M.S. in Global Media and Cultures (jointly with Literature, Media and Communication; with a focus on French) and we are developing an M.S. in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies with a focus on French. The school is home to approximately 60 full- and part-time faculty members. The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts is recognized nationally and internationally for teaching and research examining the human context of engineering, science, and technology.
