American Friends of Marbach Summer Fellowships
American Friends of Marbach Summer Fellowships
The American Friends of Marbach (AFM), with the generous support of the Max Kade Foundation, are able to award summer dissertation fellowships of $4,000 each to Ph.D. candidates from American universities doing research in the field of German Studies at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv (DLA) in Marbach. In addition, thanks to the generosity of donors to the AFM and in recognition of its former president, this year we are able to award one Mike Lützeler Fellowship for a PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher. To qualify for the award as a postdoc, the date of the PhD defense must have been during or after September 2022. Previous recipients of AFM fellowships are not eligible to apply again, and fellowship recipients may not hold another grant concurrently.
These grants are meant to cover travel, room, and board, and are meant to be taken over the summer break for at least a 1-month stay in Marbach. All grantees benefit from the excellent services that the DLA provides to researchers. Researchers can also participate in a weekly “Stipendiaten-Café,” where international stipend-holders and fellow humanists have the opportunity to network and discuss their work with one another; in addition, the DLA’s “Mittwochsseminare” provide space for more formal presentations. Depending on availability, the well-appointed Collegienhaus on the grounds of the DLA offers an excellent option for lodging.
For questions, please contact Prof. Lynn L. Wolff (Michigan State University, lwolff@msu.edu). The DLA Marbach itself also offers a number of fellowships, which can be found at: http://www.dla-marbach.de/service/stipendienprogramm.
How to Apply
Please submit a 1-2 page project description, which should include a brief statement about the relevance of the holdings at the DLA for the project, and a current C.V., and arrange for one letter of recommendation from the dissertation advisor to be sent to Lynn Wolff lwolff@msu.edu by February 15, 2025.
The AFM Awards Committee will review all submissions received by the deadline and decisions will be announced by the beginning of March.
