Travel Grant

We are glad to announce that the Organizing Committee has set aside modest funds for participants from overseas who need assistance with their travel expenses to Japan. After reviewing the applications, the Organizing Committee will provide up to $500 per person for 10 participants.

Exemption from the participation fee

We have also decided to exempt from the participation fee 10 domestic participants who are graduate students or need financial support.

Information on how to apply for the travel grant and exemption of the participation fee will be announced on September 10.

Dear colleagues and friends,
The Organizing Committee has decided to extend the deadline for submission of abstracts from July 31 to August 20. We look forward to receiving more submissions from you. In accordance with this extension, the date for the announcement of acceptance of your papers will be changed to September 10.

The Organizing Committee is currently making preparations based on the assumption that the symposium can be held in Nagoya in March 2022 as scheduled in person (not on-line). However, we are aware that, depending on the pandemic situation and the resulting international travel restrictions, we will also have to take into consideration the possibility of postponing the symposium until a safer time when you can really enjoy your travel to Japan. If we come to the conclusion that the symposium should be postponed, we will make the announcement on September 10, after obtaining the agreement of IDS.

Message from President

International Dostoevsky Society is proud to hold its XVIII Symposium at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies in Nagoya, Japan, 4-8 March, 2022. Our Society, founded in 1971, has just marked its sesquicentennial, and Dostoevsky, born in 1821, is entering his third century. The Nagoya Symposium, then, celebrates strong traditions as well as fresh beginnings. This will be our first Symposium to take place in Asia, where Dostoevsky’s works have inspired passionate readers and brilliant scholars, philosophers, psychologists, and writers for generations. We are eager to learn from the many different perspectives that will be shared at the Symposium, and to build new conversations about Dostoevsky’s work and legacy around the world. As a central theme, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his great, Apocalyptic novel Demons, which, though rooted in a specific time and place, offers profound resonance and relevance to the human condition in our own time and place.
