Masculine Wars, Feminine Exterminations: Experiences, Traumas and Revolts (NeMLA 2022, Baltimore)
In general, war implies the use of force that could be declined in automatic, arbitrary and excessive violence. War is being used as a strategy to conquer territories and subjugate people in order to safeguard interests, be it strategic or not (Pius Ngandu Nkashama, Guerres African and historical writings). Today, war is no longer reduced to murderous combats where victories are proclaimed at the cost of blood (Jacqueline Ching, Cyberterrorism). In addition to military wars, symbolic, ideological, mediatic and even institutional wars where bodies, and more precisely female bodies, serve as sites of confrontation and places of extermination have been notorious (Christina Lamb, Nos corps, their field of battle: What war does to women). In African and Caribbean literature, the connection between masculine wars and feminine bodies reveals inequalities and stereotyped representations of the feminine experience of wars in which women are mostly vulnerable (Koulsy Lamko, La phalène des Collines).
However, taking into account masculine and / or feminine works (literary and/or artistic), or even their intersections, gives rise to imaginaries at the confluence of passivity and revolt (Emmanuel Dongala, Johnny chien méchant; Ahmadou Kourouma, Allah is not obligated; Tanella Boni, Curfew Mornings; Léonora Miano, The Interior of the Night). This dichotomy between passivity and revolt inherent in women's experiences of conflict proposes striking scenarios and complex avenues for research. What are these new / modern forms or expressions of masculine wars? Where is the violence against women located? What imaginaries do French and French-speaking authors build around the female experience of wars?
Encouraging multidimensional and interdisciplinary analyzes of the poetics of female bodies in a context of conflict, this panel opens the debate on the traditional and contemporary representations and imaginaries of wars in literature and arts with an emphasis on the place occupied by the female(s) character(s), the abuses, exploitations, and martyrdoms of her/their body(ies), as well as her/their responses and complex reactions to war, oppression, arbitrariness, and extermination attempts.

En général, la guerre justifie l’usage de la force et le déferlement d’une violence automatique, arbitraire et excessive pour conquérir des territoires et soumettre des peuples dans l’optique de satisfaire des intérêts, stratégiques ou non (Pius Ngandu Nkashama, Guerres africaines et écritures historiques). Aujourd’hui, la guerre ne se réduit plus en un affrontement meurtrier où les victoires se proclament au prix du sang (Jacqueline Ching, Cyberterrorism). En plus des guerres militaires, des guerres symboliques, idéologiques, médiatiques, voire institutionnelles existent où les corps, et plus précisément les corps féminins, servent de sites d’affrontement et de lieux d’extermination (Christina Lamb, Nos corps, leur champ de bataille: Ce que la guerre fait aux femmes). Dans la littérature africaine et caribéenne, le rapprochement entre guerres au masculin et corps au féminin décline un rapport de force inégalitaire où la représentation de l’expérience féminine des guerres repose sur le préjugé de la vulnérabilité des femmes (Koulsy Lamko, La phalène des collines).
Cependant, la prise en compte des écritures masculines et/ou féminines, voire de leur croisement, fait germer des imaginaires aux confluents entre passivité et révolte (Emmanuel Dongala, Johnny chien méchant; Ahmadou Kourouma, Allah n’est pas obligé; Tanella Boni, Matins de couvrefeu; Léonora Miano, L’intérieur de la nuit). Cette dichotomie entre passivité et révolte inhérente aux expériences féminines des conflits dresse un panorama plus complexe lorsque sont pris en compte les littératures et arts visuels français et francophones. Quelles sont ces formes ou expressions nouvelles/modernes des guerres au masculin ? Où se localise la violence dont sont victimes les femmes ? Quel(s) imaginaire(s) les auteur-trice-s français-e-s et francophones (se) construisent-ils autour de l’expérience féminine des guerres?
Privilégiant des analyses multidimensionnelles et interdisciplinaires de la poétique des corps féminins en contexte de conflit, ce panel ouvre le débat sur les représentations et imaginaires que les auteur-rice-s et cinéastes français-e-s et francophones (se) construisent autour des formes contemporaines ou traditionnelles de la guerre, de la place qu’y occupe le personnage féminin, des abus, exploitations, et martyrisassions de son corps, ainsi que les réponses et réactions complexes de celle-ci face à l’oppression, à l’arbitraire, et aux tentatives d’extermination.
