NeMLA 2022 roundtable on German language teaching

Beginn
10.03.2022
Ende
13.03.2022
Deadline Abstract
30.09.2021

CFP event to be held at the Northeastern Modern Language Association (NeMLA) convention in Baltimore, Maryland, from March 10-13, 2022.

Reading is a fundamental component of all levels of second language instruction and the goal of developing reading proficiency necessarily informs the selection, didacticization, and instruction of curricular materials. A reliance on authentic texts common in curricula designed according to current standards poses challenges in these areas, but also creates opportunities for rethinking the place, purpose, and structure of reading proficiency as communicative competence in the language classroom and within the curriculum.

This roundtable will provide a forum for instructors to discuss their current and developing practices, approaches, and materials from the perspective of developing reading proficiency, including the integration and instruction of authentic texts in OER textbooks.

Language instructors and applied linguists are encouraged to submit abstracts.

Some questions to be considered include:

- What is the role of reading within the wider language curriculum?

- How do we as instructors integrate reading practice into our German curriculum and lesson planning?

- How can texts be didacticized within different curricular frameworks and approaches?

- How can reading proficiency be developed explicitly and implicitly?

- What varieties of “non-standard” texts or text types lend themselves well to developing reading proficiency?

Please submit abstracts of approximately 250 words, including the submitter’s biographical information, through the NeMLA website:

Submission deadline: September 30, 2021
