Dear colleagues,

The School of Cultures and Languages at the University of Kent invites applications for October 2022 entry to our PhD programme in German. The University of Kent is part of the CHASE AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership. Successful applicants for PhD study will be able to apply for studentship funding.

Applications for funding will be considered by the University with the best applicants put forward to four CHASE selection panels. Applications will be considered on a competitive basis.

In German, we welcome applications across all areas of German Studies, in particular on German literature and culture from 1700-present and on comparative topics. Our staff's research expertise includes German and English poetry, philosophy in the aftermath of German post-Kantian thought, and the relationship between literature and religion (Dr Ian Cooper), life writing, biography, literary and cultural practices of friendship (Dr Tobias Heinrich), comparative literature, European modernism, lateness and late style, Rainer Maria Rilke and W.G. Sebald (Prof Ben Hutchinson). All CHASE awards cover both fees and maintenance. UK and international (including EU) students are eligible to apply. The funding will cover professional development opportunities, including the enhancement of public engagement skills and placements with CHASE partner organisations in the UK and overseas.
