The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Washington University invites applications for its PhD program for the 2019-2020 academic year. 

A center of scholarly excellence with an internationally prominent and intellec­tually dynamic faculty, the department offers graduate students the opportunity to develop a wide spectrum of skills in textual and cultural analysis, academic writing, scholarly research, and university-level teaching that will prepare them for a life of intellectual engagement and professional success.

6 Exceptional Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificates / 1 Unique Joint Degree with Comparative Literature

Students in the PhD program in German can choose to earn certificates in:

  • Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
  • Film and Media Studies
  • Digital Humanities
  • Translation Studies
  • Early Modern Studies
  • Second Language Acquisition

We also offer a dynamic, one-of-a-kind joint degree in Germanic Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature, which allows students to combine their research in German literature and culture with deep interdisciplinary knowledge.


Generous Financial Support

All incoming students, including those entering with a master’s degree in German, are guaranteed up to six years of full fellowship support in order to pursue additional interdisciplinary training. Our students also receive full tuition remission and five years of summer funding. In 2018, the average eleven-month fellowship amount was $25,696 and tuition remission was $52,400.  (Washington University is ranked 2nd among the top twenty national universities for least expensive off-campus housing by US News and World Report.)


Outstanding Faculty

Our 8 internationally-recognized scholars have expertise in periods from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Our interdisciplinary seminars address topics ranging from medieval narratology to new media theory, from early modern witches to nineteenth-century women writers.


Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring

Our students receive outstanding pedagogical training and participate in a unique program of internships to develop skills teaching literature and culture in both English and German. They have opportunities to teach at all levels of the language program as well as in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Jewish Studies; and Film and Media Studies.


Successful Graduates

Of the 35 students who have completed a PhD in the last ten years, 55% are faculty in higher education, 11% are employed in university administration, and 31% work inpublishing, translation, nonprofit management and secondary school teaching.
