Culture and Crisis: Dallas Goethe Center Symposium, University of Dallas in Irving

The Dallas Goethe Center is soliciting papers for its Goethe symposium in April 2022. The symposium will consist of interdisciplinary panels focused on the topic of “Culture and Crisis,” which will take place over the course of a two-day event at the University of Dallas (Irving, TX – USA). As with our previous symposiums, the Dallas Goethe Center plans to publish the proceedings of the conference (see Jacob-Ivan Eidt and Christoph Weber, Eds. Goethe’s Bildung: Dialog Between Tradition and Innovation. Peter Lang: New York, 2019).
The symposium intends to explore Goethe’s insights into the role of culture in times of crisis from an interdisciplinary perspective. Topics may include but are not limited to:
- Truth and Poetry in an Age of Misinformation
- Art and Revolution
- Humanism and the End of the World
- Literature and the Anthropocene
- Imagining a New World
- Music and the Arts as Coping Mechanisms and Instruments of Communication
- Tradition and Crisis
- Science and the Humanities in Crisis
- Crises New and Old
- Crisis and War
- Goethe on Sickness and Death
Presentations should be between 15-20 minutes each with the possibility of publishing a longer version of each paper.
Please send a 250-400 word abstract outlining the talk/article and a short current CV to: Prof. Dr. Jacob-Ivan Eidt Associate Professor of German and Chair of Modern Languages and Literatures, University of Dallas at: jieidt@udallas.edu The submission deadline for the abstract is December 31, 2021. Accepted proposals will be announced by February 14, 2022, and completed papers should be submitted in advance of the symposium by March 7, 2022.
