    Combining a cultural history of sound with media and literary studies, 'Acoustic Entanglements' presents a new perspective on the entangled affiliations of transnational mobility, diasporic cultural memory, embodied performance, and the material practices of aesthetic acts. Starting by reassessing Emily Dickinson's poetry as participating in an emergent phonographic logic, this book proposes that sound in modernity assumes the capacity to cross time and space, 'entangling' past and present, living and dead, periphery and alleged center. From this vantage point, the study examines Lillian Allen's dub poetry as an ethical demand for economic justice made via sound, Janet Cardiff's audio walks as renegotiating the cultural place of Europe for a North American imaginary, and Anishinaabe artist Rebecca Belmore's performances as voicing indigenous resilience in the present. Focusing on Canada and the US, the book brings together the fields of sound studies and transnational American studies -- Provided by the publisher Introduction: sound that moves -- Spirited media, aural excesses: Emily Dickinson and the phonograph -- (Re)mixing histories: Lillian Allen and the roues of dub poetry -- Subjects of hearing, subject to history: the sound works of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller -- Disciplining hearing -- Stratified sound: Rebecca Belmore and William Forsythe.

    This book explores the literary representation of late Victorian and early Edwardian London from an auditory perspective, arguing that readers should ‘listen’ to impressions of the city, as described by writers such as Conrad, Doyle, Ford and Gissing. It was in this period that London began to ‘sound modern’ and, through a closer hearing of its literature, writers’ wider responses to modernity are revealed. The book is structured into familiar modernist themes, revisiting time and space, social progress and popular culture through an exploration of the sound impressions of some key works. Each chapter is contextualized by these themes, revealing how the sound of the news, social protest, music hall and suburbanization impacted on writers’ literary imaginations. Suitable for students of modernist literature and specialists in sound studies, this book will also appeal to readers with a wider interest in London’s history and popular culture between 1880-1918 Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- 1.     Culture, media, and science are largely determined by noise. By interference and »noise«, un-intended, nonsensical, and undesired sounds are meant - those which are traditionally the opposite of linguistic and musical sense-making sounds. Even recent research takes this view. However, concentrated interdisciplinary work on listening to sounds of negation, i.e. »un-sounds«, can bring to light previously unknown structures, the analysis potential of which for cultural studies is difficult to exaggerate. The contributions to this volume focus especially on the 20th Century, since the technical capabilities in sound recording have resulted in specific postures Kultur, Medien, Wissenschaften sind maßgeblich von Geräuschen bestimmt. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Doch das konzentrierte interdisziplinäre 'Hin-Hören' auf solche negierten Laute, also Un-Laute, lässt bisher unerkannte Strukturen zutage treten, deren Analysepotenzial für die Kulturwissenschaften derzeit kaum zu überschätzen ist.
