This article is based on the premise that literary texts exhibit a diversity of sounds that are not audible in the strict sense of the word. Instead, the literary sound experience is delegated to readers’ imaginations. It is only during the reading process that, depending on the readers’ experiences, sounds can be made ›audible.‹ Within the text, sounds are evoked by different literary devices. These include the use of literary soundtracks, which are generated when individual (pop) songs are quoted or alluded to in the text or the paratext. They also encompass references to band names, song titles or lyrics, or to sound storage media and their specific characteristics or to objects of everyday and popular culture (e.g. T-shirts). For the text analysis, a tool from the field of film music studies is employed: Georg Maas’s differentiation between a tectonic, a syntactic, a semantic and a mediating function of film music is used to discriminate between the diverse functions of pop music literary soundtracks. Thus, a theory that spans different media is deployed across another media boundary in order to illustrate the role of pop music in contemporary literary texts for young adults.

The present article deals with a phenomenon of the portuguese language which is well-known and yet rather neglected in brazilian schools as well as in schools abroad: metaphony. Since this regular vowel change is a phenomenon that foms part exclusively of speech and is not represented in writing, it constitutes a problem for foreign learners, in our case speakers of German. We therefore propose a strategy by the help of which the phenomenon of metaphony in Portuguese can be explained, based on analogies with a similar regular sound change in the German language, called Umlaut. Our study is based upon data collected among students at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Northern Germany.

In his paper, "The Canonization of German-language Digital Literature," Florian Hartling discusses "Net Literature," a relatively young phenomenon, that has its roots in experimental visual and concrete poetry and hypertext. With the use of new media technology, this new genre of literature has acquired much interest and is now considered to be one of the most important influences in contemporary art. Not only does Net Literature connect sound, video, and animation with interactivity and allows new forms of artistic expression, it also impacts significantly on the traditional functions of the literary system. Hartling suggests that, in relation to Net Literature, the notion of the "death of the author" gives birth to the "writing reader." Hartling presents the results of his study where he applies the concept of "canon" to German-language Net Literature and where he attempts to find out whether, in this new form of literature, a "canon" has already been formed. Based on Karl Erik Rosengren's framework of "mention technique," a sample of Germanlanguage reviews of Net Literature was analyzed. The study intends to test the applicability of Rosengren's method to the analysis of Net Literature, that is, whether it is valid to use a method that was originally developed for the empirical study of the traditional literary canon for the study of an emergent Net Literature.

The present study intends to analyze the literary personality of the German-language writer and translator Alfred Margul-Sperber and his approach to Romanian folk poetry and Romanian folk ballads. Alfred Margul-Sperber is known as a classical German-language poet from Romania, as a discoverer and supporter of literary talent, but also as a brilliant translator. Impressions from his childhood and life experiences contributed to Alfred MargulSperber’s interest for Romanian poets and especially for Romanian folk poetry, which left its own mark on Sperber’s literary creation. The author was fascinated by its plurality of forms, its richness of rhymes, images and sounds. The masterpiece of Romanian folk poetry, “Mioriţa/The little Ewe”-ballad raised the interest of the multilingual translator who proved his outstanding talent by translating the original text into German as accurately as possible and remarkably close to the spirit of the Romanian folk poetry, thus popularizing it among the German readers at home and abroad.

Music and language have very much in common - both are constructed according to a rule system, i.e. words and sounds are combined into larger functional units such as sentences and music phrases. These rule-based systems also determine the relationships of their individual parts to the whole and certain dependencies of the linguistic and musical elements. They are acquired in unconscious learning processes. This paper presents the results of the study carried out at the Educational Faculty of University of Hradec Králové. The main objective of the study was the use of music in foreign language teaching. The first part of the study focused on content analysis of selected German learning books. The second part of the study analyzed questionnaires answered by the foreign language teachers, who presented their own experience with music in foreign language lessons. We see great potential in using music in the foreign language teaching, i.e. music should be an integral part of every phase of foreign language learning.

This article presents basic concepts of German intonation and discusses the importance of intonation for the teaching of German as a foreign language, particularly in Brazil. For native speakers of Portuguese studying German, intonation is probably more challenging than the phonetics of individual sounds. The article describes the German system of tones, tone movements, and accents on the level of utterance, as well as their contributions to the meaning of utterances, illustrated for declarative and interrogative sentences. The concluding chapter provides classroom intonation exercises.

While discussions about the appropriate age of learning a second language are going on, as in many developed countries, in our country also, children are taught foreign languages starting from kindergarten. In foreign language learning, to hear the correct pronunciation of the speech sounds and words by means of audio-visual devices, to be able to repeat them, and know the culture of the target language is very important. In that case, the role of cartoons in foreign language learning is an important issue which needs to be addressed. In this study, the role of cartoons in learning a foreign language of children has been investigated. In this context, the age of foreign language learning and foreign language teaching methods have been considered theoretically; which type of cartoons are more effective and useful in foreign language learning at an early age has tried to be identified.

This paper focusses On the discussion of the preservation of expressive aspects in translation., Considerations are grounded on the HJELMSLEVian concepts of the isomorphy between the planes of content and expression, which are both constituted by-substance and form. The present study intends to show that the connotative equivalence of a text can only be achieved in the target language when attention is paid to both the formal-stylistic and the textual-normative dimensions. This involves the appropriation of the stylistic values of the linguistic expression in the source language and, mainly, the understanding of the tropes and the relationships between them. Thus, the present study draws on discourse analysis, comprehending "enunciation" theories and the rhetorical and pragmatic considerations on the level of expression. Considering that the literary text is privileged in providing stylistically marked choices, it is important to highlight the phonetic and semantic correspondences, that is, the close relationship between sound and meaning, which harbours one of the major difficulties in translation. The theory is applied to "Os Sertões" (English translation: "Rebellion on the Backlands") by Euclides da Cunha.

  9. Montagetechnik und ihre Funktion in Alfred Döblins Roman Berlin Alexanderplatz The technique and function of montage in Alfred Döblin's novel 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' Alfred Döblin'in 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' Romanında Montaj Tekniği ve İşlevi

This article focuses primarily on three areas: First the article deals with Alfred Döblin's concept of the novel and the function of the montage technique from his perspective. Secondly, the article draws attention to the fact that Alfred Döblin, a neurologist by profession, who later dedicated himself exclusively to his writing, used the montage technique intensively in his great city novel Berlin Alexanderplatz. The technique, which operates at different levels of language, narrative technique and plot, is demonstrated by selected examples from the novel. In each case the intention of the novelist is discussed. The article considers whether individual accumulating elements accord with the wholeness of the novel, and if so, how this interesting synthesis occurs. The final focus is on his efforts to use the montage technique to portray the big city. In the case of Berlin Alexanderplatz, this effort ultimately ends with a big city epic. In this study, we consider how Döblin used the montage technique in Berlin Alexanderplatz, which was central, and new for German literature at that time. Additionally, narrative styles and techniques as parables, paraboles, sound associations, word and rhyme repetition and relevant passages are supported by quotations from the novel.
