    Johannes Steizinger untersucht unter drei Leitaspekten die Bedeutung Goethes für die Lebensphilosophie Wilhelm Diltheys. Goethe stelle das Vorbild für Diltheys Weltanschauung dar; er diene ihm als Beispiel für die Erkenntnis der Gesetzmäßigkeiten der Einbildungskraft; und schließlich steige die vielfach beschworene Synthese von Goethes Leben und Werk für Dilthey zum Ideal von Dichtung als einer "Steigerungsform des Lebens" selbst auf. Goethe bilde folglich nicht nur einen zentralen Gegenstand in der Entwicklung von Diltheys Ästhetik und Poetik, wie sie etwa in den unterschiedlichen Fassungen von "Ueber die Einbildungskraft der Dichter" (ab 1877) greifbar wird. Darüber hinaus beanspruche er Goethe konsequent als Lehrmeister in wesentlichen methodologischen Fragen, ja er verpflichte ihn geradezu auf eine Beglaubigungsinstanz der eigenen Philosophie, wenn er in seiner Baseler Antrittsvorlesung programmatisch festhält: "So ruht Goethes forschendes Auge noch auf dem, was wir heute tun." Die methodische Bedeutung Goethes für Dilthey zeige sich in erster Linie an Phänomenen wie der Selbsterforschung und dem Selbstzeugnis. Es sei in letzter Instanz der eigene Lebensbegriff, den Dilthey bereits bei Goethe systematisch vorgeprägt sieht. So lasse sich "die Relativität alles Geschichtlichen" mit Goethe als Grundtendenz an das 'Leben' selbst zurückspielen und depotenzieren; so lasse sich mit Goethe das Denken als "Ausdruck des Lebens" und nicht als dessen Widerpart begreifen; und so sei das genetische Naturverständnis Goethes wegweisend für Diltheys typologische Weltanschauungslehre. Der zentrale Stellenwert der Einbildungskraft und die 'schöpferische' Opposition, die sie zu den "pragmatischen Erfordernissen der Erfahrungswelt" unterhalte, erlaube es Dilthey sogar, die Unterscheidung zwischen Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften im Rekurs auf Goethe vorzunehmen.     Stefan Willer analysiert die zahlreichen um 1900 kursierenden Pathologien und Pathographien 'großer Männer', die Goethe oft als privilegiertes Fallbeispiel bemühen. Die diese Schriften kennzeichnende Mixtur aus "biographischem Interesse", "vitalistischer Weltanschauung" und "metaphysischer Überhöhung" betrachtet Willer als typisch für eine zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts prosperierende 'lebenswissenschaftliche' Goethe-Rezeption, die Goethe allerdings nicht degradiere, sondern die in der Regel sogar zu einer "umso emphatischeren Aufwertung" seiner "künstlerischen Lebensleistung" führe und Goethe auf ihre Art anschlussfähig für das neue Jahrhundert mache. Während insbesondere Schiller vom pathologischen Diskurs als ein "heroischer" (und rein biologisch Kranker) kanonisiert worden sei, schlage dieser Goethe auf die 'nervöse', 'innerliche' und partiell auch 'dekadente' Seite der Modernität. Im Zentrum von Willers Untersuchung steht die Studie "Ueber das Pathologische bei Goethe", die der Psychiater Paul J. Möbius 1898 vorgelegt hat. Neben dem "diagnostisch-lesenden Blick" und der "symptomalen Lektüre", die sowohl Goethe'sche Figuren wie Werther oder Gretchen als auch bedeutende Lebensstationen des Autors pathologisch einordnen, gilt Willers besonderes Interesse der Partizipation dieser Studie an den wichtigsten medizinischen Diskursen ihrer Zeit. Die Untersuchung verrate den Einfluss einer bereits von Cesare Lombroso wissenschaftlich behaupteten Affinität von Genie und Wahnsinn ebenso wie den der Entartungs-Theorie Max Nordaus. Die seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert gängige Verbindung zwischen Pathologie und Degenerationsdiskurs appliziere Möbius jedoch allenfalls zaghaft auf Goethe. Stattdessen unterlege er die Goethe'sche Pathologie einer Entwicklung, die sich in Sieben-Jahres-Zyklen manifestiert habe. Willer flankiert seine Möbius-Lektüre systematisch mit anderen Goethe-Pathographien jenseits der Psychiatrie bis in den Nationalsozialismus hinein und er konfrontiert Möbius abschließend mit prominenten psychoanalytischen Goethe-Lektüren. All diesen Bemühungen sei gemeinsam, dass sie Goethe als Patienten betrachteten. Gemeinsam sei ihnen aber auch, dass die Ärzte als von Goethe permanent 'Affizierte' ihrerseits "in die Nähe des Patienten-Status" zu geraten drohten.

    The 'Goethe Yearbook,' first published in 1982, is a publication of the Goethe Society of North America and is dedicated to North American Goethe Scholarship. It aims above all to encourage and publish original English-language contributions to the understanding of Goethe and other authors of the 'Goethezeit,' while also welcoming contributions from scholars around the world. Volume 14 features a special section on childhood in the Age of Goethe, co-edited with Anthony Krupp. In addition, readers will find two essays illuminating Goethe's 'Triumph der Empfindsamkeit,' an inspired reading of 'Das Märchen' against the background of Goethe's critique of Newtonian science, a careful analysis of the daemonic in the poem 'Mächtiges überraschen,' and essays on Egmont and 'Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre.     The division between North and South in Europe represents a geographical as well as a cultural boundary that has influenced the way many European nations think about their history and identity. This divide is particularly prominent in the cultural dialogue between Germany and Italy and has played an important role in the construction of German identity. This study explores German representations of Italy in the early nineteenth century by examining the Italian travel writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine. It analyses Goethe’s Italienische Reise and Heine’s Italian Reisebilder and focuses on the negotiation of cultural identity through representations of the North-South divide.The book compares Goethe’s complex attitudes towards Germany during this period with Heine’s wrestling with his place in German culture, as seen through their depictions of Italy. Goethe pointed to the classical heritage of Greek antiquity as the source not only of Italian, but also of German, cultural traditions and therefore as an essential element of German identity. Heine called into question Goethe’s experience of Italy and instead used his travels to reveal the instability of German identity and the changing nature of the European community.     The 'Goethe Yearbook,' first published in 1982, is a publication of the Goethe Society of North America and is dedicated to North American Goethe Scholarship. It aims above all to encourage and publish original English-language contributions to the understanding of Goethe and other authors of the 'Goethezeit,' while also welcoming contributions from scholars around the world. This year's volume features a cluster of exceptional essays that shed new light on Goethe's 'Wilhelm Meister' novels and 'Faust,' as well as fascinating articles on the early play 'Das Jahrmarktsfest zu Plundersweilen' and the poem 'Ilmenau,' Schiller's 'Die Räuber,' and an essay that places Goethe's thought in relation to current debates about cosmopolitanism and postcoloniality. Engaging reviews of recent publications in Goethe studies round out the volume. Contributors include Eric Denton, Matt Erlin, Jaimey Fisher, Ingrid Rieger, Rainer Kawa, David Barry, Stephanie Dawson, and John Pizer. Simon J. Volume 14 features a special section on childhood in the Age of Goethe, co-edited with Anthony Krupp. In addition, readers will find two essays illuminating Goethe's 'Triumph der Empfindsamkeit,' an inspired reading of 'Das Märchen' against the background of Goethe's critique of Newtonian science, a careful analysis of the daemonic in the poem 'Mächtiges überraschen,' and essays on Egmont and 'Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre. Karin Schutjer untersucht Goethes ambivalente Auseinandersetzung mit dem Judentum von der Beobachtung aus, dass sie seinen ebenfalls zwiespältigen Modernebegriff zutiefst beeinflusste. Ihre Studie kontextualisiert Goethes Rezeption der jüdischen Schrifttradition und hinterfragt die Spuren, die sowohl der Pentateuch, die Kabbala und Spinoza als auch antijüdische Denkfiguren wie der Ewige oder der wandernde Jude in seinem Werk hinterlassen haben. Schutjers Lektüren von 'Dichtung und Wahrheit', 'Hermann und Dorothea', 'Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahren', 'Faust' und Goethes Volksbuch-Projekt bringen aufschlussreiche Erkenntnisse zutage, die Goethes Kritik an der jüdischen Emanzipationsbewegung überraschend in ein neues Licht rücken, wenn beispielsweise Faust als Moses-Figur gelesen wird, sich Goethes Semiotik aus dem jüdischen Verbot des Götzendienstes speist oder das Alte Testament vor dem Hintergrund der jüdischen Exilgeschichte als säkulare Nationalliteratur gedeutet wird, die Goethe als Vorbild für eine diasporische schriftbezogene deutsche Kulturnation verstand.

Die Arbeit offenbart seine rationalistische Hermeneutik: Das entwickelte Mosebild blendet die biblisch zentrale religiöse Dimension der Mosegestalt vollkommen aus. Wirkungsgeschichtlich bedeutsam ist seine Absage an die zeitgenössische Spekulation über Mose als Eingeweihten in die ägyptischen Mysterien. Mose wird von Goethe als ein roher und mitteilungsunfahiger Mensch gezeichnet, unfähig auch als Feldherr und Regent, der zuletzt von Josua und Kaleb gewaltsam beseitigt werden muss. Die Persönlichkeit, ein Mensch, der von seiner Natur zum Größten getrieben wird - das ist Goethes Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Mose. The book “Israel in the Desert" provides Goethe’s most extensive contribution to biblical scholarship revealing his rationalistic approach: The portrait of Moses he draws excludes the religious dimension, which is central in the biblical literature. With regard to the history of reception Goethe’s reproach of contemporary speculation on Moses being initiated into the Egypt mysteries seems important. Goethe describes Moses as a rude person, without communicative competence, a military and political leader of poor quality, and therefore eventually liquidated by Joshua and Caleb. The personal character, a man driven by his nature to the outmost - this is the clue to Goethe’s interpretation of Mose.
