    Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a dominant figure in European literature and intellectual life, was the creator of a new and influential visual culture. This volume investigates a new science of perception through an exploration of his autobiographical works, novels and writings on optics. The psychoanalytic approach taken in this study focuses on central acts of perception and the role of vision in Goethe as key to the formation of identity. By addressing the impact of visuality on the act of writing, new interpretations of his most important works emerge through analysis of subject formation in the autobiographies, The Italian Journey and Poetry and Truth. Further, the relationship between the self and the gaze plays a central role in the semi-autobiographical works, The Elective Affinities, Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, as well as Color Theory.     Der Dichter und Pädagoge Friedrich Pustkuchen (1793-1834) mystifizierte 1821 das literarische Publikum mit den sogenannten »falschen Wanderjahren«, in denen das Goethesche Poesieverständnis und der »Wilhelm Meister« herbe Kritik erfuhren. Heftige Reaktionen zahlreicher goethetreuer Literaten (von Arnim bis Tieck) und etliche Invektiven Goethes belegen die Wirksamkeit von Pustkuchens Werk, das Goethe zur zweiten Version der »Wanderjahre« von 1829 angeregt hat. Durch die Beschäftigung mit Pustkuchens romanesker Streitschrift läßt sich ein deutlicheres Bild der gehaltlichen und formalen Entwicklung der »Meister«-Romane gewinnen. Gleichzeitig zeigen sich Goethes zunehmende konzeptionelle Schwierigkeiten mit den im »Meister« propagierten Lebensidealen. Der literarische Streitfall, der als einzige Initialzündung der Goethekritik zu Lebzeiten Goethes gelten kann, zeigt die schwierige soziale und geistige Situation deutscher Autoren der Restaurationszeit angesichts von Goethes beherrschendem Einfluß und gestattet es, eine Art goethespezifisches Meinungsprofil für das frühe 19. Jahrhundert zu entwerfen. Durch eine Fülle von Archivmaterialien konnten Friedrich Pustkuchens Leben und seine kritische Beziehung zum Werk und zur Ästhetik Goethes detailliert dargestellt werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurden in einem umfangreichen Textanhang schwer zugängliche Texte Pustkuchens publiziert, darunter zum ersten Mal seine beiden Briefe an Goethe. Die vielfältigen germanistischen Versäumnisse und Fehlinterpretationen im Fall Pustkuchens, die dokumentiert werden, werfen am Rande auch ein interessantes Schlaglicht auf die deutsche Übergrößen-Philologie und die Kanonisierung der Weimarer Klassik am Beispiel Goethes In 1821, the publication year of Goethe's »Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre«, the literary public was unsettled by a pamphlet with the same title calling into question not only Wilhelm Meister's path to Bildung but the very values and ideals Goethe himself stood for. Author Friedrich Pustkuchen (1793-1834) combined the criticisms leveled at Goethe by others before him with new arguments designed to topple Goethe from the intellectual and spiritual pedestal his fellow Germans had hoisted him onto. The warring reactions to this attack convey a vivid picture of the regard Goethe was held in in the age of Restauration. The scholarly campaign waged (then and since) against Pustkuchen in the field of Germanic Studies is documented in a lengthy annex. It reveals the Goethe research tradition in a rather curious light

    The division between North and South in Europe represents a geographical as well as a cultural boundary that has influenced the way many European nations think about their history and identity. This divide is particularly prominent in the cultural dialogue between Germany and Italy and has played an important role in the construction of German identity. This study explores German representations of Italy in the early nineteenth century by examining the Italian travel writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine. It analyses Goethe’s Italienische Reise and Heine’s Italian Reisebilder and focuses on the negotiation of cultural identity through representations of the North-South divide.The book compares Goethe’s complex attitudes towards Germany during this period with Heine’s wrestling with his place in German culture, as seen through their depictions of Italy. Goethe pointed to the classical heritage of Greek antiquity as the source not only of Italian, but also of German, cultural traditions and therefore as an essential element of German identity. Heine called into question Goethe’s experience of Italy and instead used his travels to reveal the instability of German identity and the changing nature of the European community.     Goethe's »Seefahrt« (1776) was written a few months after the poet's arrival in Weimar. The study has a dual aim. It shows first that the poem was a response by Goethe to Salomon Gessner's idyll »Der Sturm«, a response based on a poetological program indebted to Herder's concept of the ode form and Diderot's theory of drama. In addition, it outlines the anthropological horizons within which 18th century sea poetry developed. Goethe's poem is the presentation of a 'physical and moral' conflict. Against the background of a tradition that goes back to the 107th Psalm, it unfolds a motivic constellation of genuinely Horatian poetic inspiration and actualizes its relevance for Goethe's own life-world.

    The division between North and South in Europe represents a geographical as well as a cultural boundary that has influenced the way many European nations think about their history and identity. This divide is particularly prominent in the cultural dialogue between Germany and Italy and has played an important role in the construction of German identity. This study explores German representations of Italy in the early nineteenth century by examining the Italian travel writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine. It analyses Goethe’s Italienische Reise and Heine’s Italian Reisebilder and focuses on the negotiation of cultural identity through representations of the North-South divide. The book compares Goethe’s complex attitudes towards Germany during this period with Heine’s wrestling with his place in German culture, as seen through their depictions of Italy. Goethe pointed to the classical heritage of Greek antiquity as the source not only of Italian, but also of German, cultural traditions and therefore as an essential element of German identity. Heine called into question Goethe’s experience of Italy and instead used his travels to reveal the instability of German identity and the changing nature of the European community. By investigating the travel narratives of Goethe and Heine, this study reveals the influences of historical and political change on perspectives on the South in Germany.

Ohne daß Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stets im Zentrum der Untersuchung stünde, bleiben sie doch alle auf ihn bezogen. Das Spektrum reicht von der Darlegung wesentlicher Voraussetzungen, die zur klassischen Blütezeit führten, über das Umfeld des Goetheschen Jugendwerks bis zur Epoche des »West-östlichen Divan«. Ihr Ziel ist es, ausgehend von der philologischen Rekonstruktion und Interpretation zu größeren geistesgeschichtlichen, motivgeschichtlichen oder lebensgeschichtlichen Zusammenhängen vorzudringen Most of the essays in this collection are the fruit of work done for the Goethe Museum Frankfurt/Main (Freies Deutsches Hochstift). While Goethe is not always in the forefront of the studies, they ultimately all revolve around him. The spectrum ranges from a discussion of some essential preconditions for the flowering of German classicism and the environment in which Goethe's youthful works took shape to the epoch of the "West-Östlicher Divan".     Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a construção das Stimmungen (atmosferas) na livre-adaptação do Fausto de Goethe realizada, em 2011, pelo diretor russo Aleksandr Sokurov. Dentro dessa perspectiva, buscaremos demonstrar, particularmente, como o diálogo entre Sokurov e Goethe não se dá somente no domínio do enredo, mas também no modo peculiar como ambos se utilizam da técnica como forma de modulação dos afetos dos espectadores. This work aims at analyzing the construction of the Stimmungen (atmospheres) in the free-adaptation of the Goethe's Faust made in 2011 by the Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov. Within this perspective, we seek to demonstrate in particular how the dialogue between Sokurov and Goethe does not happen only in realm of the plot, but also in the peculiar way in which both use the technique as a way of modulating the spectators’ affections.

    Die Kapitel zur »pädagogischen Provinz« aus Goethes spätem Roman »Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre« präsentieren nicht nur einen eigenwilligen erzieherischen Entwurf sowie einen rückblickenden Kommentar zu den Bemühungen des selbsternannten »pädagogischen« 18. Jahrhunderts. Gleichzeitig markieren die hier aufgerufenen Diskurse und Dispositive ein Spannungsverhältnis zwischen einerseits Theater/Theatralität und andererseits Erziehung/Bildung. Von Goethes Inszenierung dieser Spannung her erweisen sich einige Klassiker der Erziehungs- und Bildungsliteratur als Vorboten für die im frühen 21. Jahrhundert um sich greifenden Theatralisierungstendenzen auf dem Bildungs- und Arbeitssektor: Rousseaus Erziehungsbibel »Émile«, Goethes eigene »Lehrjahre« und andere This analysis of Goethe's 'Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years' shows how its pedagogical discourse can be read as a precursor to the theatrical and educational discourse of the early 21st Century
