Goethe's »Seefahrt« (1776) was written a few months after the poet's arrival in Weimar. The study has a dual aim. It shows first that the poem was a response by Goethe to Salomon Gessner's idyll »Der Sturm«, a response based on a poetological program indebted to Herder's concept of the ode form and Diderot's theory of drama. In addition, it outlines the anthropological horizons within which 18th century sea poetry developed. Goethe's poem is the presentation of a 'physical and moral' conflict. Against the background of a tradition that goes back to the 107th Psalm, it unfolds a motivic constellation of genuinely Horatian poetic inspiration and actualizes its relevance for Goethe's own life-world.

The year 1999 saw the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany's greatest writer. Appropriately, literary scholars within Germany and beyond paid tribute to this remarkable talent. But a number of commentators also noted that Goethe is often revered rather than read, known of rather than known. It is the aim of this study to provide a corrective to this state of affairs. The authors concentrate on the literary work and offer analyses that represent an impassioned, but by no means uncritical, advocacy -- one that seeks to persuade both academic critics and general readers alike that Goethe is one of the key figures of European modernity. To an extent that is virtually unique in modern literature, Goethe was active in a whole number of literary genres. He was a superb poet, unrivaled in the variety of his expressive modes, and in his ability to combine intellectual sophistication with experiential immediacy. He also wrote short stories and novels throughout his life, ranging from theThe Sorrows of Young Werther, to The Elective Affinities. He was also a highly skilled dramatist, both in the historical mode and in the classical verse-drama. Above all else, Goethe is the author of Faust: a workthat attempts -- and achieves -- more than any other modern European drama. Jahrhundert von fundamentaler Bedeutung ist In his literary works Goethe engages profoundly with various manifestations of melancholy. Highly remarkable is the subtlety with which he takes up ancient, medieval, and contemporary concepts of melancholy, the accuracy with which he models the protagonists of his works on these patterns, and the range of his reflections on the possibilities of an existence free of melancholy. The present study is the first to examine Goethe's literary works in the context of a culture-historical problematic of major significance for the late 18th and early 19th century

Goethe's concept of Weltliteratur ('world literature') made its first appearance in his periodical »Über Kunst und Altertum« and displays three dimensions: historical diagnosis, moral injunction, a classicistic poetics of modernism. This book attempts to do justice to the wide-ranging implications of the concept by exploring two different avenues in the history of ideas. The first part examines 18th century theoretical debates on cultural difference and the formation of a global society (Montesquieu, Rousseau, Adam Smith, Kant, Herder, Humboldt). The second traces the evolution of Goethe's program for a 'world literature' from the age of the French Revolution to the last decade of his life.

In his literary works Goethe engages profoundly with various manifestations of melancholy. Highly remarkable is the subtlety with which he takes up ancient, medieval, and contemporary concepts of melancholy, the accuracy with which he models the protagonists of his works on these patterns, and the range of his reflections on the possibilities of an existence free of melancholy. The present study is the first to examine Goethe's literary works in the context of a culture-historical problematic of major significance for the late 18th and early 19th century. Review text: „Valks Dissertation [bietet] nach der Relevanz ihres thematischen Programms und dessen besonnener Umsetzung im Dreischritt von Genese, Symptomatik und Therapie eine bislang entbehrte Überblicksdarstellung, auf die man sich in der Goetheforschung noch oft beziehen wird.0In: Zeitschrift für Germanistik 16/2006 „Valks klare Sprachführung, die sich aller terminologischen Manierismen enthält, macht die Lektüre seiner Studie zu einem besonderen Genuß und sollte ihm eine der Bedeutsamkeit seiner Ergebnisse entsprechende große Leserschaft eintragen.0In: Lessing-Yearbook 36/2005 „Valk’s study is the first general survey of the theme of melancholy in Goethe’s writing. It deserves to be widely read, for its implications are extremely significant. […] Valk has beaten a path down which others will want to follow him, and if there is much work left to be done, this testifies to the importance of the theme. Valk’s monograph establishes a framework within which much of Goethe’s writing will now have to be seen.0In: The Modern Language Review 100/2005 „Cette monographie au titre modeste constituera désormais une référence appréciable pour toute personne désirant étudier la psychologie des personnages et le déroulement des actions dans l’œuvre théâtrale et narrative de Goethe.
