    Goethe's 'Reineke Fuchs' is commonly regarded as a work of classical serenity, and although this view accords with Goethe's later reflections on 'Reineke Fuchs', it fails to recognize the concrete textual differences that set Goethe's epic apart from his models and which were conceived as a provocation. This essay outlines how Goethe's numerous changes transform Gottsched's 'Reineke der Fuchs' into a subversive response not only to the tradition of Reynard the Fox, but also to debates about the significance of rhetoric and the function of figurative language in eighteenth-century German literature. ; published

    Schiller and Goethe have very different conceptions of tragedy. In his play Don Carlos, Schiller, especially in the character of Philip II, shows us the conflict between blood and positive law. In Goethe´s novel Elective Affinities, the individual will is ignorant of fate and helpless against it. So to speak, Schiller applies the "Antigone´s Model" and Goethe applies the "Oedipus Model". In his dramatic vision of the conflict, Schiller is inspired by Shakespeare´s plays. However, Goethe´s point of view is based on his reflections on Natural Philosophy.

Goethe’s planets are defined by the character of their namesake gods and goddesses as well as by the physical characters of the rocky or gaseous heavenly bodies known today with their characteristics explored by Goethe’s contemporaries. It has been shown that Goethe corresponded with some of the most influential astronomers of his time.

    Mit Israel in der Wüste liefert Goethe seinen umfangreichsten bibelwissenschaftlichen Beitrag. Die Arbeit offenbart seine rationalistische Hermeneutik: Das entwickelte Mosebild blendet die biblisch zentrale religiöse Dimension der Mosegestalt vollkommen aus. Wirkungsgeschichtlich bedeutsam ist seine Absage an die zeitgenössische Spekulation über Mose als Eingeweihten in die ägyptischen Mysterien. Mose wird von Goethe als ein roher und mitteilungsunfahiger Mensch gezeichnet, unfähig auch als Feldherr und Regent, der zuletzt von Josua und Kaleb gewaltsam beseitigt werden muss. Die Persönlichkeit, ein Mensch, der von seiner Natur zum Größten getrieben wird - das ist Goethes Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Mose. The book “Israel in the Desert" provides Goethe’s most extensive contribution to biblical scholarship revealing his rationalistic approach: The portrait of Moses he draws excludes the religious dimension, which is central in the biblical literature. With regard to the history of reception Goethe’s reproach of contemporary speculation on Moses being initiated into the Egypt mysteries seems important. Goethe describes Moses as a rude person, without communicative competence, a military and political leader of poor quality, and therefore eventually liquidated by Joshua and Caleb. The personal character, a man driven by his nature to the outmost - this is the clue to Goethe’s interpretation of Mose.

Mektuplaşmalarında eserleri hakkında karşılıklı ifadeleri bunu göstermektedir. Schiller'in çıkardığı "Die Horen" adlı edebi ve felsefi dergi, Goethe'nin katkısıyla nerdeyse Alman Klasisizminin program dergisi olmuştur. Felsefeye olan büyük merakı ile Schiller Goethe'nin eserlerini ve "Horen" dergisindeki yazılarını okuyunca, kendisi ile onun arasında önemli bir farkı keşfetmek durumunda kalmıştır. Doğalcı ve düşünselci edebiyat hakkında yazdığı görüşleri bunun kanıtlarıdır. ; Schillers poetologische Abhandlung "Über naive und sentimentalische Dichtung" beruht auf seiner engen und fruchtbringenden Freundschaft mit Goethe. Ihr Briefwechsel, wie auch ihre gegensetige Äusserungen über ihre Werke zeugen davon. Schillers literarische und geistige Zeitschrift "Die Horen" war mit Goethes Beitrag fast ein Programmzeitschrift der deutschen Klassik. Schillers große Neigung zur Philosophie hatte ihn bei der Lektüre von Goethes Werken und seinen Schriften in "Horen" dazu geführt, zwischen ihm und Goethe einen wichtigen Gegensatz zu entdecken. Seine Betrachtungen über naive und sentimentalische Dichtung sind Zeugnisse dafür.

    On the occasion of Goethe's 100 year anniversary in 1932, proposals were made to have the celebration of the Verfassungstag coincide with individual reflection on Germany's great cultural heritage. The Reichsregierung hesitated, since similar plans to declare the Verfassungstag an official holiday in the 1920's had been thwarted by the National Right. In an address given at the Paulskirche in Frankfurt, the editor-in-chief of the "Deutsche Republik", Werner Thormann, demonstrated how contemporary Goethe was. In reply to Thomas Mann's famous speech on Goethe held on March 18, 1932, Thormann confronted his audience with the controversial question of the relationship between humanism and politics. Unlike Thomas Mann, Thormann did not share the general view of an unpolitical Goethe; he agreed with Thomas Mann, however when he referred to Goethe in his appeal to beware of a totally politicised society in an ever-threatening National Socialist dictatorship. Er gibt zunächst Kommentare zu Goethes "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre", dem Roman, der als Modell für alle anderen Bildungsromane fungierte. Es wird die Hypothese aufgestellt, dass es Goethe um eine Verbindung von Tat und Kontemplation ging. Im Anschluss wird Novalis' Roman "Heinrich von Ofterdingen" im Hinblick auf das Bildungskonzept betrachtet. This article suggests a possible meaning of the concept of "Bildungsroman". It analyzes Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister Lehrjahre", a novel that is considered the model of this kind of narrative and argues that Goethe shows how the union of action and contemplation is an ideal required to create a balanced humanist man. It also discusses Novalis' "Heinrich von Ofterdingen" as an anti-model to Goethe.

    Goethe hat 1827 in seiner Überarbeitung des Originalmanuskripts vom Helena-Akt in Faust II das Leben, das Schicksal und die Persönlichkeit von Helena erweitert und ihr Würde und Menschlichkeit verliehen. Inzwischen befasste sich Goethe mit der Lektüre der klassischen chinesischen Literatur, was zur Schaffung von seinem Werk Chinesisches führte. Goethe stattete die klassischen Schönheiten mit einem vergleichbaren Schicksal und ähnlichen ästhetischen Eigenschaften aus wie die Helena. In seiner Rekonstruktion von Helena und den chinesischen klassischen Schönheiten schwächte Goethe deren nationale literarische Identität und betont die Universalität der Menschheit. Die Tatsache, dass der Helena-Akt schließlich zu einer ästhetischen Tragödie wird, die die allgemeine menschliche Situation widerspiegelt, ist im Wesentlichen auf die Perspektive der Weltliteratur zurückzuführen, die Goethe in seinen späteren Jahren im Zuge der Aufarbeitung des klassischen Ideals entwickelte. Abstract: In 1827, Goethe reworked the original manuscript of Faust’s Helena-Akt and created an enriched version of Helena’s life, fate and personality, endowing her with dignity and humanity. In the same period, Goethe wrote Chinesisches after reading classical Chinese literature and gave the beauties from ancient China the similar aesthetic tragic connotation with Helena. In his reconstruction of Helena and the Chinese beauties, Goethe undermines their national literary identity and emphasizes the universality of humanity. The fact that Helena-Akt eventually becomes an aesthetic tragedy reflecting the universal condition of human beings is fundamentally due to Goethe’s broadened vision of world literature, which was formed in the process at his later years of renouncing the classical ideal.

    What's the reason for Mephistopheles in Goethe's "Faust" being less malicious than one might expect? Taking its cue from that question, this article discusses the figure of the devil in the European imaginary of the 16th century, especially in Christopher Marlowe's "Doctor Faustus". Some principal characteristics of Goethe's secular devil are analysed. Goethe's Mephistopheles neither is the demon found in Christian mythology nor represents the villain of the piece. Goethe holds the human characters of both parts of his "Faust" responsible for the evil that occurs. Por que o Mefistófeles no "Fausto" de Goethe, ao contrário de todas as expectativas, não apresenta uma natureza realmente má? Partindo desta pergunta, neste artigo discute-se a figura do diabo no imaginário europeu no sec. XVI e no "Doctor Faustus" de Christopher Marlowe. Em seguida são analisados alguns traços principais do diabo goethiano secularizado. O Mefistófeles de Goethe não é o demônio da mitologia cristã e tão pouco representa o grande vilão da peça. Seu autor deixa claro que a responsibilidade pelo mal produzido nas duas partes do "Fausto" é dos seus personagens humanos.

Dentro dessa perspectiva, buscaremos demonstrar, particularmente, como o diálogo entre Sokurov e Goethe não se dá somente no domínio do enredo, mas também no modo peculiar como ambos se utilizam da técnica como forma de modulação dos afetos dos espectadores. ; This work aims at analyzing the construction of the Stimmungen (atmospheres) in the free-adaptation of the Goethe's Faust made in 2011 by the Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov. Within this perspective, we seek to demonstrate in particular how the dialogue between Sokurov and Goethe does not happen only in realm of the plot, but also in the peculiar way in which both use the technique as a way of modulating the spectators’ affections.

Den Literaturwissenschaftler mag erstaunen, daß dies mit Goethe überhaupt möglich ist. Der Funktionszusammenhang, in dem diese Arbeit steht, ist zu berücksichtigen: damit nicht dem Goethe-Verständnis zur Last gelegt wird, was dem katholisch-theologischen Qualifizierungsziel geschuldet ist. Gleichwohl greift die Arbeit ausdrücklich über ihre Fakultätsgrenzen hinaus. Das zeigt schon die nicht-konfessionelle Auffassung von ‚Theologie‘, die der Verfasser zugrunde legt. Im Rückgriff auf Parmenides und Aristoteles versteht er „Theologie“ als „philosophische Reflexion auf das […], was zugleich als Höchstes zu denken ist und sich diesem Denken dennoch entzieht“ (S. 20, Anm. 4). So verstanden, wird die mit dem Titel aufgestellte starke Behauptung, Goethe habe eine Theologie, ins strukturell Abstrakte abgeschwächt. Es ist allerdings die Pointe der Arbeit, daß diese abstrakte Vorstellung von Theologie bei Goethe am Ende doch christlich zu verstehen sei.

    Goethes »Faust«, dessen erster Teil unter dem Titel »Faust. Eine Tragödie« zur Ostermesse 1808 erschien, regte bald Illustratoren an. Der junge Peter Cornelius zeichnete ab 1809 Blätter zu diesem Werk und ließ sie durch Sulpiz Boisserée – einem der frühesten Sammler altdeutscher Malerei und Verfechter der Vollendung des Kölner Domes – Goethe zukommen, der die glückliche Verschmelzung von Form und Inhalt lobte, jedoch vor Überschätzung der altdeutschen Kunst warnte. Die 12 Blätter eschienen mit einer Widmung an Goethe 1816 bis 1826 im Verlag von F. Wenner in Frankfurt. Das Goethezeitportal publiziert alle Zeichnungen und fügt Dokumente zur Entstehungsgeschichte wie zur Aufnahme durch Goethe bei. Die Kompositionszyklen von Cornelius, Moritz Retzsch und Eugène Delacroix, die bedeutendsten zu Goethes Lebzeiten, können nun miteinander verglichen werden.

I want to argue that Goethe’s morphology is the site of a massive transformation of the notion of form, the scope and implications of which resurface after long latency at the beginning of the 20th century, for example, with Georg Simmel’s sociological notion of form-processes and the related idea of "reciprocity" ('Wechselwirkung') (cf. 265). My interest lies in interpreting what looks like a theory of organisms and nature as a more general theory of formation and transformation.

Gloël ist trotz wenig aufschlussreicher Quellenangaben immer noch Standardautor. Ebenso verhält es sich mit Goethes Beziehung zu Geheimbünden und Freimaurertum. Zwar wecken sie seit je das Interesse seiner Biographen, jedoch steht auch hier die Weimarer Zeit im Vordergrund.

    The recourse to Goethe plays an important role in the work of Mohammad Iqbal (1873-1938), one of the few important writers from the Indian subcontinent who knew German literature. Iqbal situates his own writing in the context of western colonial expansion and the corresponding world-historical loss of power of Islam in the East. The recourse to Goethe becomes an import reference point in his work. It enables him to stylise himself as a Messenger of the East in reply to Goethe as a representative of the West. By establishing a comparative cultural constellation with his German predecessor Iqbal affirms a cultural position consisting of a mode of historical complaint and cultural revival.
