The 35 original essays in A Companion to Narrative Theory constitute the best available introduction to this vital and contested field of humanistic enquiry. The essays represent all the major critical approaches to narrative - narratological, rhetorical, feminist, post-structuralist, historicist - and investigate and debate the relations among them. In addition, they stretch the boundaries of the field by considering narratives in different disciplines, such as law and medicine, and in a variety of media, including film, music, and painting. The volume is divided into six parts: competing accounts of the history of the field; examinations of recurrent problems; suggestions for theoretical revisions and innovations; explorations of the relations among form, history, politics, and ethics; analyses of the way narrative operates in different disciplines and in media beyond the written word; and speculations about the future of narrative and of narrative theory.; At the same time, it offers provocative analyses of a wide range of works, both canonical and popular, from the Bible through novels by Dickens, Woolf, and Arundhati Roy on to Bernard Herrmann's film music and the action paintings of Jackson Pollock. Among its contributors are many of the leading figures in the field, including such early pioneers as Wayne C. Booth, Seymour Chatman, J. Hillis Miller, and Gerald Prince

A hundred years after his death, Jules Verne (1828-1905) has in the popular imagination become synonymous with prediction of the future. Yet the actual texts of Verne’s major novels (the vast series known as the Voyages extraordinaires) still remain unknown to many. In the English-speaking world, translations of Verne’s best-known novels (Around the World in Eighty Days, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon) have often contained wholesale distortions of his plots and characters, and the popular (and false) image of Verne as a foreteller of the future often comes not through what he actually wrote, but through films and other adaptations of his work. It is against this background of misrepresentation and misconception that the present study has been produced. Verne was, Unwin argues, a master of the self-conscious novel, his work a pastiche of science discourse, fictional and non-fictional writings, and flamboyant, theatrical narrative. Unwin makes a compelling case for Verne as a master of the nineteenth-century experimental novel, in the company of Gustave Flaubert and other canonical French writers. The text will be a wonderful addition to the shelves of those interested in science fiction, experimental writing, and critical theory

This is the second of three volumes which chart the history of the science fiction magazine from the earliest days to the present. The first volume Time Machines traced the development of the sf magazine from its earliest days and the creation of the first specialist magazine, Amazing Stories. Transformations takes up the story to reveal a turbulent period that was to witness the extraordinary rise and fall and rise again of science. Britain’s foremost sf historian, Mike Ashley charts the sf boom years in the wake of the nuclear age that was to see the ‘The Golden Age’ of Science Fiction with the emergence of magazines such as Galaxy, Startling Stories and Fantastic, as well as authors like Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick and Frank Herbert. He then goes on to explore the bust years of 1954-1960 followed by the renaissance in the 1960s led by the new wave of British authors like Michael Moorcock and J.G. Ballard and the rise in interest of fantasy fiction, encouraged by Lord of the Rings and the Conan books of Robert E. Howard. Transformations concludes with an examination of the new found interest in sf magazines during the late 1960s and the incredibly influential roles Star Treck , the film 2001: A Space Odyssey and, above all, the first manned Moon landing played in transforming the sf magazine

**Acclaimed writer Andrew Davies.turns his talents to one of Charles.Dicken’s most brilliant novels – arguably the greatest ever.depiction of Victorian London,.from its glittering heights to its very.lowest depths – adapting it into a.series of half-hour episodes.**..An all-star cast come together to bring.this classic Dickens’ novel to life. At the.court of Chancery, the interminable suit.of Jarndyce and Jarndyce becomes the.centre of a web of relationships at all.levels of society and a metaphor for the.decay and corruption at the heart of.Victorian England...An epic feast of characters and storylines,.Bleak House is a passionate indictment.of the legal system that is as searingly.relevant today as it was in the mid-19th.Century. At its heart is the story of the.icily beautiful Lady Dedlock, who nurses.a dark secret, and the merciless lawyer.Tulkinghorn, who seeks to uncover it..The generous John Jarndyce, struggling.with his own past, and his two attractive.young wards Richard and Ada, are all.caught up, like Lady Dedlock, in the.infamous case of Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce,.which will make one of them rich beyond.imagination if it can ever be brought.to a conclusion. Esther Summerson, is.a girl without a past, whom Jarndyce.takes under his wing as a companion for.Ada, but with whom he falls in love, and.whose connection with Lady Dedlock.may bring ruin to them both...The cast of supporting characters.contains some of Dickens’ most.famous creations – Smallweed, the evil.moneylender; Krook, the first (and.possibly last) man in literature to die.by spontaneous combustion; Guppy,.the ambitious young clerk, infatuated.with Esther; Bucket the ice-cool police.inspector, at the centre of fiction’s first.ever whodunit; and Little Jo, the young.crossing sweeper, whose tragic death.almost brought Victorian England to a.standstill

In a London psychiatric hospital, an enigmatic young man claims, among other things, to be the son of an exiled African dictator - a story that becomes unnervingly plausible. In a fiery and suspenseful debate, his doctor and consultant clash over the patient's diagnosis and treatment. What ensues is an incendiary tale of race, madness and a Darwinian power struggle at the heart of a dying NHS. Filmed on location in London, this dynamic and often very funny adaptation of Joe Penhall's award-winning play retains the music, lighting and sound team from the original stage production, which premiered in April 2000. Blue/Orange is based on Joe Penhall's award winning play of the same name
