    ger: Österreichische Gedenkkultur zu Widerstand und Krieg Denkmäler und Gedächtnisorte in Wien 1945-1986 Die Arbeit geht von der Analyse zweier Denkmäler aus, die beinahe zeitlich parallel im Herbst 1948 in Wien errichtet worden sind: des Wiener Opferdenkmals auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof, das den Opfern für ein freies Österreich 1934-1945 gewidmet ist, und des Heimkehrer-Gedächtnismals auf dem Wiener Leopoldsberg, das den österreichischen Soldaten im Zweiten Weltkrieg gedenkt. Diese beiden Denkmäler stehen in ihrer jeweiligen Textualität äußerst antithetisch zueinander und repräsentieren damit die spezifischen Signaturen der widersprüchlichen, ambiguenten und segmentierten österreichischen zeitgeschichtlichen Gedächtniskultur der frühen Zweiten Republik. Auch das ebenso im Herbst 1948 in Wien wiedererrichtete Republikdenkmal widerspiegelt das nach den politischen Lagern gespaltene österreichische Gedächtnis.
    Anfänglichen Standortideen nach sollte das Wiener Opferdenkmal vor der Wiener Votivkirche errichtet werden, die ursprünglich auch als eine österreichische Ruhmeshalle konzipiert worden war; der Wiener Leopoldsberg ist sogar ausdrücklich aufgrund seiner Überlieferungstradition als österreichische Ruhmesstätte besonders wegen seines Bezuges zum österreichischen Türkenbefreiungssieg von 1683 als Standort des Heimkehrerdenkmals gewählt worden. Die Arbeit geht dann im Folgenden am Beispiel von mehreren profanen zeitgeschichtlichen Gedenkstätten in der Votivkirche und auch im Wiener Stephansdom als zwei zentralen Orten österreichischer Identitätsbildung diesem spezifischen österreichischen Ruhmesgeschichte-Narrativ nach. Insbesonders sollte dabei die besondere Kontextualisierung von tradierter österreichischer Türkenkrieg- und Ruhmesgeschichtenerzählung und zeitgeschichtlichem Gedenken in Österreich rekonstruiert werden. Vor allem soll in der Arbeit die spezifische Instrumentalisierung dieser Kontextbildung für die österreichische Selbstdarstellung und Identitätskonstruktion in der Zweiten Republik dargestellt werden.
    eng: Austrian Culture of Remembrance of Resistance and War Monuments and sights of remembrance in Vienna 1945-1986 This text starts with the analysis of two monuments which were erected in Vienna almost at the same time in autumn of 1948: First the Monument Of Viennese Victims on the Zentralfriedhof (central cemetery), which has been dedicated to the victims of a free Austria 1934-1945 and secondly the monument dedicated to the homecoming soldiers on the Viennese Leopoldsberg which reminds of Austrian soldiers of the Second World War. These two monuments stand opposite to each other and represent therefore the specific monogram of the contradictory, ambiguous, segmented Austrian contemporary culture of remembrance. Also the monument of the Austrian republic was re-erected in autumn 1948 and it reflects the politically split interest spheres of the Austrian memory.
    Primarily as to the ideas for its location in Vienna the Viennese monument of the victims should be placed in front of the Votivkirche, which has originally been drafted as an Austrian "Walhalla"; the Viennese Leopoldsberg has been chosen explicitly as a place for a monument of homecoming soldiers on the basis of tradition as an Austrian place of remembrance, especially because of its reference to the Austrian victory against the Turks of 1683. This work consequently follows for example the specific Austrian narrative of glorifying history guided by several profane memorials of contemporary history in the Votivkirche and also in the Viennese Stephansdom, two places typical for the forming of Austrian identity. In particular the contextualization of traditional Austrian narratives of the Turks and the glory as well as contemporary remembrance should be reconstructed.
    In this work the specific instrumentation of this contextualization for the Austrian self- portrayal and construction of identity in the Second Republic should be represented.

    Die Absonderung der organisierten Veteranenkultur von der bundesdeutschen Kulturentwicklung spätestens seit den 1970er Jahren, der enge ideologische Rahmen und die Statik der in ihm vorgetragenen Werte, Haltungen und Orientierungsmuster bieten ideale Voraussetzungen, um die an eine klar umgrenzte Sprechergruppe gebundene Konstitution eines kulturellen Gedächtnisses zu rekonstruieren. Die Analyse von Volkstrauertagsreden und Gesprächen mit ihren Verfassern demonstrieren eine geradezu modellhafte Geschlossenheit der in ihnen vorgetragenen Verständigungsmuster, die hier unter dem Forschungsparadigma der Kriegsbewältigungsstrategien untersucht werden The discrepancy between the organized war-veteran culture and the development of overall German culture since the 1970s at the latest, the closely-defined ideological framework involved, and the static nature of the values, attitudes, and guiding principles upheld within that framework provide ideal conditions for the reconstruction of a form of cultural memory associated with a clearly defined group of language users. The analysis of speeches held on Commemoration Day (Volkstrauertag) and of interviews with the writers of those speeches indicates the almost total uniformity of the communicative patterns employed in them. Those patterns are discussed here from the perspective of research on strategies for coming to terms with wartime experiences

    Speaking the Unspeakable in Postwar Germany is an interdisciplinary study of a diverse set of public speeches given by major literary and cultural figures in the 1950s and 1960s. Through close readings of canonical speeches by Hannah Arendt, Theodor W. Adorno, Ingeborg Bachmann, Martin Buber, Paul Celan, Uwe Johnson, Peter Szondi, and Peter Weiss, Sonja Boos demonstrates that these speakers both facilitated and subverted the construction of a public discourse about the Holocaust in postwar West Germany. The author's analysis of original audio recordings of the speech events (several of which will be available on a companion website) improves our understanding of the spoken, performative dimension of public speeches. While emphasizing the social constructedness of discourse, experience, and identity, Boos does not neglect the pragmatic conditions of aesthetic and intellectual production—most notably, the felt need to respond to the breach in tradition caused by the Holocaust. The book thereby illuminates the process by which a set of writers and intellectuals, instead of trying to mend what they perceived as a radical break in historical continuity or corroborating the myth of a "new beginning," searched for ways to make this historical rupture rhetorically and semantically discernible and literally audible

    Examina el rol central que desempeñan los artefactos y prácticas culturales de comienzos de siglo XXI en Colombia en el contexto de los debates públicos sobre los legados de las violencias y en las prácticas de construcción de la memoria. Analiza así los modos en que diversas novelas, largometrajes de ficción y prácticas testimoniales contribuyen a comprensiones de las crisis históricas que exceden aquellas que emergen del debate político dominante y de las prácticas jurídicas instituidas por el Estado. Los textos y prácticas que aquí se destacan (La Virgen de los Sicarios, Delirio, El vuelco del cangrejo, La sirga y el proyecto "Cartas de la Persistencia", entre otros) articulan diversas tragedias causadas por el conflicto armado y el narcotráfico para reflexionar sobre los modos en que estas pueden o no recordarse y repararse, interviniendo de forma crítica en los procesos interpretativos de las violencias de las últimas décadas en un momento histórico fundamental en el que la sociedad colombiana debate cómo recordar el pasado reciente y cómo se puede hablar de sus víctimas. En su atención a la pérdida, a la condición del testigo y el sobreviviente y a sus trabajos de la memoria, y particularmente a través de una investigación del acto de dar testimonio fuera del ámbito judicial, estas obras y prácticas nos entrenan a considerar dimensiones de la violencia y la reparación que han sido poco abordadas en los relatos dominantes sobre las crisis colombianas de las últimas décadas. Este libro mapea la manera en que ellas investigan la relación entre violencia y lenguaje, y las dimensiones genérico-sexuales de las dinámicas violentas, proponen reflexiones críticas sobre la ética del testimonio, cuestionan representaciones convencionales de la víctima y complican los discursos oficiales de postconflicto que circulan con gran fuerza hoy en Colombia

    In the village of Funar, located in the central highlands of Timor-Leste, the disturbing events of the twenty-four-year-long Indonesian occupation are rarely articulated in narratives of suffering. Instead, the highlanders emphasize the significance of their return to the sacred land of the ancestors, a place where "gold" is abundant and life is thought to originate. On one hand, this collective amnesia is due to villagers' exclusion from contemporary nation-building processes, which bestow recognition only on those who actively participated in the resistance struggle against Indonesia. On the other hand, the cultural revival and the privileging of the ancestral landscape and traditions over narratives of suffering derive from a particular understanding of how human subjects are constituted. Before life and after death, humans and the land are composed of the same substance; only during life are they separated. To recover from the forced dislocation the highlanders experienced under the Indonesian occupation, they thus seek to reestablish a mythical, primordial unity with the land by reinvigorating ancestral practices.Never leaving out of sight the intense political and emotional dilemmas imposed by the past on people’s daily lives, The Land of Gold seeks to go beyond prevailing theories of postconflict reconstruction that prioritize human relationships. Instead, it explores the significance of people’s affective and ritual engagement with the environment and with their ancestors as survivors come to terms with the disruptive events of the past

    El cambio del nuevo siglo supone un punto de inflexión para la sociedad española con respecto a su propio pasado. Desde el movimiento para la recuperación de la memoria histórica se reivindica la apertura de fosas comunes para así llevar a cabo los miles de procesos de duelo individuales que hasta entonces no se habían podido realizar. Desde la literatura, se busca corregir el déficit de memoria arrojando luz sobre episodios e historias olvidados o desconocidos en una suerte de exhumación literaria. El nexo de estos aspectos es el punto de partida para el presente estudio: donde convergen una literatura influenciada por tendencias socio-políticas con la noción de que existen tareas pendientes, entre las que está el duelo. ¿Qué implicación tiene la existencia de miles de duelos inconclusos individuales para el el colectivo? ¿Se puede hablar de un duelo colectivo? Y más allá de la recuperación de historias, ¿qué otros modelos nos puede ofrecer la literatura para relacionarnos con las ausencias dejadas por las pérdidas pasadas que, con el paso del tiempo, ya no son propiamente nuestras? El estudio propone un prototipo literario —narrativas postraumáticas de duelo persistente— que busca redefinir mediante la narrativa nuestra relación en el presente con las pérdidas sufridas en el pasado. Este hipotético duelo se plantea en términos colectivos y postfreudianos: esto es, un duelo que no busque resolución, sino que persista como recordatorio continuo de las pérdidas en el pasado y que sirva como fuente de una relación ética y afectiva con ese pasado desde el presente

    Dem Band, dessen Beiträge teils auf drei internationale Workshops, teils auf ein Forschungskolloquium in Potsdam zurückgehen, liegt der Anspruch zugrunde, dass sich durch die beziehungsgeschichtliche Betrachtung öffentlicher Erinnerung für sicher geglaubte Befunde erinnerungskultureller Forschung als einseitig erweisen und rekontextualisiert werden müssen. Dies setzt jedoch voraus, Diskurse über die NS-Vergangenheit ausgehend vom Material und den zeitgenössischen Bedingungen seiner Veröffentlichung zu analysieren, nicht als nationale über Identität, sondern unter Einbeziehung des europäischen Kontexts. Die Problematisierung der dominanten kulturwissenschaftlichen Konzepte Gedächtnis und Generation, durch die Kommentierung eines bisher nicht übersetzten Textes von Maurice Halbwachs und eine Analyse der Rezeptionsgeschichte von Karl Mannheims Das Problem der Generationen", bildet den Rahmen für Fallstudien literarischer Vergangenheitsbewältigung, für Untersuchungen literarischer und medialer Strategien zur Legitimierung von Diskursen als authentisch und der asymmetrischen Verflechtung in der Abgrenzung öffentlicher Erinnerung an den Nationalsozialismus in Ost und West. Der Band will weitere Forschung anregen.
