Main description: The study inquires into the way in which specialist (scholarly and scientific) texts are reproduced for research purposes and integrated into new texts. Of especial interest are factors influencing these processes. Situative factors have a bearing on the incorporation of receptive and productive processes into concrete social, cultural, and historical contexts, on the subject under discussion and various other things. Specific individual factors depend on the aims, motivation, or status of the scholar/scientist in question. The discussion is based on empirical data and is interdisciplinary in its orientation. Text-linguistic approaches are supplemented by concepts drawn from cognitive psychology and research on writing

Main description: The volume presents a collection of papers by noted German and British medievalists, who join the discussion on the concept of text in German Medieval Studies. This topic has been intensively discussed in recent years, as new insights from editorial philology, narratology, and media theory have led to 'medieval text' becoming an open and methodologically elusive concept. The contributors weigh the theoretical arguments and apply the methodological outcome to text exemplars from the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages

Can techniques traditionally thought to be outside the scope of literature, including word processing, databasing, identity ciphering, and intensive programming, inspire the reinvention of writing? The Internet and the digital environment present writers with new challenges and opportunities to reconceive creativity, authorship, and their relationship to language. Confronted with an unprecedented amount of texts and language, writers have the opportunity to move beyond the creation of new texts and manage, parse, appropriate, and reconstruct those that already exist. In addition to explaining h

Due to computers' ability to combine different semiotic modes, texts are no longer exclusively comprised of static images and mute words. How have digital media changed the way we write and read? What methods of textual and data analysis have emerged? How do we rescue digital artifacts from obsolescence? And how can digital media be used or taught inside classrooms? These and other questions are addressed in this volume that assembles contributions by artists, writers, scholars and editors such as Dene Grigar, Sandy Baldwin, Carlos Reis and Frieder Nake. They offer a multiperspectival view on the way digital media have changed our notion of textuality

This book brings together a variety of voices – students and teachers, journal editors and authors, writers from the global north and south – to interrogate the notion of risk as it applies to the production of academic writing. Risk-taking is viewed as a productive force in teaching, learning and writing, and one that can be used to challenge the silences and erasures inherent in academic tradition and convention. Widening participation and the internationalisation of higher education make questions of language, register, agency and identity in postgraduate writing all the more pressing, and this book offers a powerful argument against the further reinforcement of a ‘northern’ Anglophone understanding of knowledge and its production and dissemination. This volume will provide food-for-thought for postgraduate students and their supervisors everywhere

The current focus on the theme of authorship in Medieval and Early Modern studies reopens questions of poetic agency and intent. Bringing into conversation several kinds of scholarship on medieval authorship, the essays in Author, Reader, Book examine interrelated questions raised by the relationship between an author and a reader, the relationships between authors and their antecedents, and the ways in which authorship interacts with the physical presentation of texts in books. The broad chronological range within this volume reveals the persistence of literary concerns that remain consistent through different periods, languages, and cultural contexts. Theoretical reflections, case studies from a wide variety of languages, examinations of devotional literature from figures such as Bishop Reginald Pecock, and analyses of works that are more secular in focus, including some by Chaucer and Christine de Pizan, come together in this volume to transcend linguistic and disciplinary boundaries
