Gab es eine Romantik oder gab es deren viele? Was zeichnet die Literaturen der Romantik in Frankreich und Deutschland, in Spanien und Italien, im Norden und vor allem im Süden des amerikanischen Doppelkontinents aus? Welche Schreibformen entwickelt eine Dichterin wie Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, die zwischen Spanien und Kuba pendelt; welche Vermittlungsmöglichkeiten sieht Germaine de Staël im deutsch-französischen Dialog; in welcher Beziehung steht die Dichtung Baudelaires zu den Schriften Poes; und was bestimmte die Rezeption deutscher Romantik in Mexiko? Die Vorlesung gibt den Blick darauf frei, in welchem Maße im Jahrhundert der Nationalismen inter- und transkulturelle Beziehungen zwischen Ländern und Kontinenten bestanden, und hinterfragt die Monologe nationalliterarischer Ausrichtung. This transareal lecture inquires into the (perhaps already lost) unity of Romanticism behind the polymorphism of the Romantic discourses that took place between two worlds, Europe and America. This lecture reveals the scope of cultural relations between countries and continents in the century of nationalisms and questions the monological focus on national literatures.

    ger: Die vorliegende Studie untersucht in Form eines Vergleichs die Funktion mittelalterlicher Motive in zwei literarischen Bewegungen, die normalerweise als diametral entgegengesetzt gelten, nämlich der Moderne und der Romantik. Zu diesem Zweck wird die Romantik aus einer breiteren Perspektive betrachtet und sodann T.S. Eliots Gedicht The Waste Land analysiert. In einem ersten kulturgeschichtlichen Teil werden das romantische Zeitalter und seine wichtigsten Merkmale dargestellt, wobei insbesondere der Einfluss der mittelalterlichen Tradition auf die Entwicklung der romantischen Ästhetik hervorgehoben wird. Die genauere Analyse von The Waste Land konzentriert sich auf Symbole der Gralslegende. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse zeigen, dass das Mittelalter in den beiden Bewegungen mit unterschiedlichen Zielsetzungen thematisiert wurde. Während die Romantiker die mittelalterliche Tradition und ihre Eigenheiten in ihre Ästhetik aufgenommen haben, hat Eliot die mittelalterlichen Symbole der Gralsmaterie weiter ausgebaut und bei der Beschreibung dieser Symbole einen gewissen Grad an Ironie an den Tag gelegt. Abschließend wird aufgezeigt, welche weiteren Forschungen zum besseren Verständnis mediävistischer Motive und des Einflusses von Geschichte und Kultur auf die literarische Produktion in den beiden Epochen bzw. Bewegungen beitragen können. eng: The present study investigates the role of the medieval in two literary movements that are normally considered diametrically opposed, namely Modernism and Romanticism. In order to do so, this thesis addresses Romanticism from a broader perspective, comparing the use of medievalism in the works of the Romantics and in T.S. Eliot’s poem The Waste Land. The Romantic Age and its most prominent features are discussed in a first cultural-historical section, which highlights the influence that the medieval tradition had on the development of the Romantic aesthetic. In the following, The Waste Land is analysed in more detail; the analysis focuses on the presence of the symbol of the Holy Grail. The analysis shows how medievalism was employed with different objectives by the Romantics and Modernists. While the Romantics incorporated the medieval tradition and its peculiarities into their aesthetic, Eliot expanded the medieval symbols of the Grail matter, displaying a certain degree of irony in the description of such symbols. In conclusion, the thesis points to further areas of research that will help to understand the impact history and the cultural tradition had on the literary production in both periods.
