The Oxford Handbook of Modern Irish Fiction presents authoritative essays by thirty-five distinguished scholars of Irish fiction. Collectively, they provide accessible and incisive assessments of the breadth and achievement of Ireland's modern novelists and short story writers, whose contribution to the evolution and modification of these unique art forms has been far out of proportion to the country's small size. The volume brings an impressive variety of critical perspectives to bear on the development of modern Irish fiction, situating authors, texts, and genres in their social, intellectual, and literary-historical contexts.

Zudem werden die Konsequenzen moralischen und unmoralischen Verhaltens für Austens Figuren näher analysiert. eng: Jane Austen (1775–1817) is one of the most popular and widely read authors of early modern Britain, and as such has been an influence on readers for centuries. Firmly rooted in the tradition of the Bildungsroman, she illustrates a heroine’s education. However, the process is not always entirely clear and didactic elements in her texts often go unnoticed. To shed some light, this thesis explores the question of what women’s education was constituted of during Jane Austen’s lifetime, and how she portrayed education in the six most popular of her novels: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. The educational practices prevalent in Britain in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century were the product of the Enlightenment, and of social criticism voiced by moralists and religious groups, who demanded reforms. Formal education was not yet available to everyone, and if so, the difference in girls’ and boys’ schooling was fundamentally different. Daughters of the upper and middle class were required to focus most of their attention on the acquisition of ‘accomplishments’, which mainly consisted of perfecting their skills in music and the fine arts. As many moralists of the time, Jane Austen criticises the prioritisation of these ‘ornamental’ skills over the acquisition of practical knowledge. An important element of Austen’s novels – and a heavily discussed topic of the time – was literature, which underwent significant development in the ‘long eighteenth century’. This thesis will examine works of fiction and non-fiction mentioned in Jane Austen’s novels and illustrate the significant role they played both in her time and work. A more direct form of instruction will be researched by looking into from whom Austen’s female characters received their education. Lastly, the thesis looks at social criticism in Austen’s novels and the consequences of moral and immoral behaviour for her characters.

To develop a theory of world literature, this book demands that the theory of the novel can no longer ignore literary forms other than realism. For centuries, the standard account of the development of the novel focused on the rise of realism in English literature. Studies of early novels connected the form to various aspects of British life across the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, including the burgeoning middle class, the growth of individualism, and the emergence of democracy and the nation-state. But as the push for teaching and learning global literature grows, this narrative is insufficient for studying novel forms outside of a predominately English-speaking British and American realm. In Estranging the Novel, Katarzyna Bartoszynska explores how the emergence and growth of world literature studies has challenged the centrality of British fiction to theories of the novel's rise. She argues that a historicist approach frequently reinforces the realist paradigm that has cast other traditions as "minor," conceding a normative vision of the novel as it seeks to explain why historical forces produced different forms elsewhere. Recasting the standard narrative by looking at different novelistic literary forms, including the Gothic, travel writing, and queer fiction, Bartoszynska offers a compelling comparative study of Polish and Irish works published across the long nineteenth century that emphasize fictionality, or the problem of world-building in literature.Reading works by Ignacy Krasicki, Jan Potocki, Narcyza Zmichowska, and Witold Gombrowicz alongside others by Jonathan Swift, Charles Maturin, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett, Bartoszynska shows that the history of the novel's rise demands a more capacious and rigorous approach to form as well as a reconceptualization of the relationship between fiction and its cultural contexts. By modeling such a heterogeneous account of the novel form, Estranging the Novel paves the way for a bracing and diverse understanding of the makeup of contemporary world literature and the many texts it encompasses—and a new perspective on the British novel as well

Goa, south India. A beautiful holiday hideaway where hippies and backpackers while away the hours. But beneath the clear blue skies lies a dirty secret ... Simran Singh is desperate for a break and some time away from her busy job as a social worker-come-crime investigator. And so the unspoilt idyll of Goa seems just the place - white beaches, blue seas and no crime. But when a disturbing video appears on her phone, featuring a young girl being attacked by a group of men, she realises that a darkness festers at the heart of this supposed paradise. And when she discovers out that the girl is Liza Kay, a British teenager who has gone missing, she knows she must act in order to save her. But first Simran must break through the web of lies and dark connections that flourish on these beaches. Everyone, it seems, knows what has happened to the girl but no one is prepared to say. And when more videos appear, and Simran herself is targeted in order to keep her quiet, the paradise soon becomes a living nightmare
