    Abstract: Does such a thing as Indian Writing in English exist? Im Aufsatz, der in fünf Absätze gegliedert ist, möchte der Verfasser vor allem die Schwierigkeit dieser speziellen Genrebestimmung beleuchten. Die Werke der untersuchten Autoren und Autorinnen der Indischen Diaspora unterscheiden äußerst voneinander, sowohl in thematischer als auch stilistischer Hinsicht. Unter ihnen gibt es Romane und Erzählungen im klassischen Erzählstil von Autoren wie Naipaul, Ghosh, Lahiri, ... hauptsächlich gruppiert um Immigrationsthemen. Zugleich bemühen sich dagegen Autoren wie Rushdie, Roy, Tharoor, ... um Sprachzertrümmerung und um die Weiterentwicklung moderner Erzähltechniken. Nicht nur wird der große mannigfaltige geographische Raum Indien mit seinen Stärken und Schwächen geschildert, sondern es entstehen synchron Rave-Geschichten und Pop-Romane bei Rushdie und Kureishi.     Race and Antiracism in Black British and British Asian Literature offers the first extended exploration of the cultural impact of the politics of race and antiracism in Britain through focussing on a selection of recent novels by black British and British Asian writers. The study argues that an understanding of how race and ethnicity function in contemporary Britain can only be gained through attention to antiracism: the politics of opposing discrimination that manifest at the level of state legislation, within local and national activism, and inside the scholarly exploration of race. It is antiracism that now most strongly conditions the emergence of racial categorisations but also of racial identities and models of behaviour. This sense of how antiracism may determine the form and content of both political debate and individual identity is traced through an examination of ten novels by black British and British Asian writers. These authors range from the well known to the critically neglected: works by Monica Ali, Nadeem Aslam, Fred D’Aguiar, Ferdinand Dennis, Hanif Kureishi, Gautam Malkani, Caryl Phillips, Mike Phillips, Zadie Smith, and Meera Syal are carefully read to explore the impacts of antiracism. These literary studies are grouped into three main themes, each of which is central to the direction of racial political identities over the last two decades in Britain: the use of the continent of Africa as a symbolic focus for black political culture; the changing forms of Muslim culture in Britain; and the emergence of a multiculturalist ethos based around the notion of ethnic communities

    ger: In dieser Arbeit wird das neuere Romanwerk von Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio bezüglich der Ästhetisierung des Raumes analysiert. Das Interesse der Verfasserin liegt dabei in den mannigfaltigen Darstellungsweisen des erzählten Raumes. Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind insbesondere zwei Texte, Ourania (2006) und Ritournelle de la faim (2008). Die Romane werden mittels einer analytischen Gliederung behandelt. Die Strukturierung der Kapitel erfolgt nach raumgliedernden Parametern. Es werden nacheinander die literarischen Darstellungsweisen des Fernbereichs, des Nahbereichs, der vertikalen und der horizontalen Gliederung behandelt. Darauf folgend werden Außen- und Innenräume sowie die Grenz- und Schwellenräume betrachtet. Durch Analysen markanter Textpassagen werden die vermittelten Raumstrukturen in Hinblick auf ihre ästhetischen Besonderheiten dargelegt, wobei wiederkehrende Themen aufgezeigt werden. Die Muster der raumstrukturierenden Prinzipien werden auf den verschiedenen textuellen Ebenen ermittelt. Dabei wird auf die Untersuchung der reichhaltigen Bildsprache besonderer Bedacht gelegt, denn sie enthält rekurrente Bilder sowie Stilfiguren. Analogien auf der semantischen Ebene werden ebenso aufgezeigt wie lyrische Elemente in den Prosatexten dargelegt werden. Dabei wird auf Stilfiguren wie Metaphern, Vergleiche und Allegorien, sowie auf seltener auftretende stilistische Mittel detailliert eingegangen. Dem den Texten inhärentem rhythmischen Prinzip wird auf mehreren textuellen Ebenen in dieser Arbeit viel Raum gegeben. Einige frühere Werke Le Clézios werden themenspezifisch in diese Arbeit einbezogen. Soziokulturelle Aspekte werden angesprochen und in einen kulturhistorischen Kontext gestellt. Des Weiteren werden interdisziplinäre geisteswissenschaftliche Bezüge zur Musik und zur Malerei hergestellt sowie dargelegt. eng: In this master?s thesis the recent novelistic Opus of Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio is analyzed focusing on the aesthetics of space. The special interest concerns the various representations of the narrated Space. Subject matter of this paper are in particular two texts, Ourania (2006) and Ritournelle de la faim (2008). The novels are treated by means of an analytic plan. The structuring of the chapters results from the parameters of spatial categories. Spatial representations in the texts are treated successively: the distance, the closeness, the vertical and the horizontal disposition. Subsequently the Outside and the Inside as well as border space and thresholds are treated. By analyzing distinctive excerpts spatial structures are getting pointed out with regard to their aesthetical characteristics in the course of which recurrent themes are depicted. The patterns of the space-structuring principles are established on various textual levels. At the same time the rich language of the figures, patterns and symbols is analyzed because it contains recurrent images and figures of literary style. Semantic analogies are pointed out as well as lyric elements in the prose are explained. Thereby literary style figures such as metaphors, allegories, comparisons and others which occur more rarely are dealt with in detail. Rhythmic elements of the different levels in the novels are analyzed and explained. Therefore some older texts of Le Cézio are included in this thesis. Socio-cultural aspects are mentioned and put in a cultural-historical context. Furthermore interdisciplinary references to the humanities, especially music and painting are established and explained.

    ger: Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem kanadischen Schriftsteller David Adams Richards und dessen fiktionaler Miramichi Region im nördlichen Teil New Brunswicks. In diesem Zusammenhang werden drei Romane erörtert: The Bay of Love and Sorrows, Mercy Among the Children und River of the Brokenhearted. Besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Analyse der einzelnen Charaktere und der Betrachtung von Macht. Als erstes wird Richards? Rolle als regionaler Autor behandelt, gefolgt von einer Ergründung der Gestalt der Macht um eine Basis für die weitere Analyse der ausgewählten Romane zu schaffen. Der Hauptteil dieser Arbeit enthält eine detaillierte Zusammenfassung von jedem Buch und eine sorgfältige Analyse der Hauptthemen in Verbindung mit einer eingehenden Erörterung der wichtigsten Charaktere. Folglich wird auch die Bedeutung der Titel behandelt. Darüber hinaus untersucht die Arbeit Richards? entgegengesetzte weibliche Charaktere und jene, die entweder die Opfer von Unterdrückung werden oder aktiv Macht auf andere ausüben. Jedes Buch behandelt Themen, die letztendlich im finalen Kapitel vereint und zusammengefasst werden. Die Arbeit schließt mit einem Vergleich der drei Romane. In diesem Kapitel werden die Machtverhältnisse zwischen den Charakteren wiedergegeben. Jenen weiblichen Protagonisten, die wissen wie sie Macht gewinnen und imstande sind diese auch auszuüben, gilt besondere Aufmerksamkeit. eng: This thesis focuses on the Maritime writer David Adams Richards and his fictional Miramichi region of northern New Brunswick. In this context, three novels are discussed, namely The Bay of Love and Sorrows, Mercy Among the Children, and River of the Brokenhearted. Special emphasis is put on the analysis of the individual characters and the treatment of power. First, Richards? role as a regional writer is discussed which is then followed by an examination of the nature of power in order to provide the basis for further analysis of the chosen novels. The main part of this thesis comprises a detailed overview of each book and a thorough analysis of the major themes combined with an in-depth discussion of the most important characters. Thus, the significance of the titles is also dealt with. Furthermore, the study examines Richards? opposing female characters and the characters that either become the victims of oppression or actively exert power over others. Each book renders themes that are united ultimately in the final chapter. The study therefore concludes on a chapter which compares the three novels, outlining the power relations among the characters and giving special attention to the female protagonists that know how to gain and exert power.

    ger: Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich mit verschiedenen Problematiken entlang der Grenze zwischen den USA und Mexiko auseinander. Sie behandelt die allgemeine (Lebens)Situation an der Grenze, die Arbeitsbedingungen in den Maquiladoras, den zahlreichen mit ausländischem Kapital finanzierten Fabriken, Dominanzverhältnisse zwischen den Nachbarländern und widmet sich dem Stellenwert mexikanischer Frauen vor dem Hintergrund unzähliger Frauenmorde. Zunächst wird Mexikos wirtschaftliche und politische Lage und dessen Beziehung zu den USA dargestellt. Die Maquiladoras werden in ihren Vor- und Nachteilen für Mexiko beschrieben, wobei auch auf die Auswirkungen für die Umwelt eingegangen wird. Zudem werden die tatsächlichen menschenunwürdigen Arbeitsbedingungen der Fabriken aufgezeigt. Des Weiteren wird die Feminisierung der Arbeitskraft in Lateinamerika und die Bedeutung der Frauen für die Maquiladora-Industrie thematisiert. Die literarische Basis liefern Mujer alabastrina von Víctor Bartoli Herrera, La frontera de cristal von Carlos Fuentes, La frontière von Patrick Bard und Ciudad final von Kama Gutier. In der Analyse der Werke werden die verschiedenen Herangehensweisen der Autoren an die Problematiken der Grenze sowie deren inhaltliche Schwerpunkte aufgezeigt. Während Patrick Bard das Thema aus der Sicht eines Journalisten behandelt, nähert sich Kama Gutier über kriminologische Untersuchungen den Ursachen der Morde. In Mujer alabastrina und La frontera de cristal erzählen betroffene Frauen aus ihrer Perspektive über das ihnen widerfahrene Leid. Dabei zeichnen sie auch ein grobes Bild der wirtschaftlichen und politischen Situation im Grenzgebiet zu den USA. Zudem werden, je nach Bedeutung für das Werk, auch sprachliche Besonderheiten hervorgehoben. Ergänzt werden die literarischen Darstellungen durch die Filme Bordertown und Backyard/Traspatio, welche die Thematik visuell umsetzen. eng: This master?s thesis deals with problems along the border between the United States of America and Mexico. It describes the general (living) situation at the border, the working conditions in the maquiladoras, which are financed by foreign investors, dominance relations between the two neighboring countries and the value of Mexican women against the background of countless femicides.First of all, the thesis discusses Mexico's economic and political situation and its relationship to the United States of America. Both the advantages and disadvantages of the maquiladoras for Mexico as well as their impact on the environment are examined. In addition, the inhumane working conditions in the factories are described. Finally, the feminization of labor in Latin America and the importance of women in the maquiladora industry are discussed.The following novels are used in the literary analysis: Mujer alabastrina by Víctor Bartoli Herrera, La frontera de cristal by Carlos Fuentes, La frontière by Patrick Bard and Ciudad final by Kama Gutier. The analyses of the novels focus on the presentation of the main subjects and highlight the different approaches of the authors to the border-related problems. While Patrick Bard addresses the theme from the perspective of a journalist, Kama Gutier takes a criminological approach. In Mujer alabastrina and La frontera de cristal women talk about the suffering they have experienced and also draw a rough picture of the economic and political situation in the region bordering the United States. In addition, linguistic characteristics are highlighted, depending on their importance in the novels.The two films Bordertown, by Gregory Nava, and Back Yard / Traspatio, written by Sabina Berman and directed by Carlos Carrera, complement the literary analyses and provide a visual impression of the problems and issues related to the maquiladoras.

Seit 50 Jahren trägt die Schriftenreihe der Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte zum großen „Epos Zeitgeschichte“ bei, analytisch, deskriptiv, dokumentarisch. Im Jubiläumsband Nr. 100 nähern sich Historiker den großen Erzählungen von Schriftstellern. Zehn bemerkenswerte Romane werden als Spiegel ihrer Zeit gelesen.     From time to time we all tend to wonder what sort of 'story' our life might comprise: what it means, where it is going, and whether it hangs together as a whole. William Lowell Randall sets out to explore certain implications of the familiar metaphor, 'the story of my life, ' and analyses its possible significance with respect to our self-understanding. In The Stories We Are he suggests our life's story may be our most important possession. To examine life-as-story involves the enrichment of the psychological approach we usually take in looking at learning and growth with a poetic approach. Randall explores the links between literature and life and speculates on what may be called 'the range of story-telling styles' according to which people compose their lives, transform the events of their lives into experiences, and seek coherence amid the diversity of the inner world of the self. In doing so, he draws on a variety of fields, including psychology, psychotherapy, theology, philosophy, feminist theory, and literary theory. Using categories like plot, character, point of view, and style, Randall plays with the possibility that we each make sense of the events of our lives to the extent that we weave them into our own unfolding novel, as simultaneously its author, narrator, main character, and reader - a novel we are continuously, sometimes consciously, re-storying. As a kind of 'poetics' of everyday life, he inquires into the narrative dimensions of our self-creation and the storied dynamics of our relationships with others, as members of the same family, community, or culture. In the process, he offers us a unique perspective on such features of our day-to-day world as secrecy, self-deception, gossip, prejudice, intimacy, maturity, and the proverbial 'art of living.'
